Is it worth it $$$$ OLD SYSTEM...

    Hi people,

I am curious what other people think and what I could do with this system?

I have some parts laying around... Socket A mobo (Asus A7V333 with IDE RAID), believe it or not... 7600 GT AGP, ethernet card, sound card, harddrive (couple of 100 gigs), heatsink from original 2500+ CPU.

I know of someone selling a 2800+ CPU for $25.00.

All I would have to buy to revive this old machine is a case and PSU and memory, would use my dvd rom from my system and put in in this one. I would look for a case and PSU deal... (would not spend more then $30 for the both after MIR). Now, all I have to buy is RAM.

Well, is it worth the investment for a sysem I don't know what I will do with.

I figure I would spend about $80.00 on RAM and hopefully get 2 gigs. Bottom line total cost will be about... $135.00. And factor in that I could be lossing $75.00 if I sell the GPU on ebay. So total cost in my mind is $210.00.

The more I think about it, the more I think I should just let these components collect dust. What do you think?

It depends on how much or what you would use it for.  I know in my constant updates I have ended up with many extra parts and extra systems.  I have more good parts just laying around not being used than I have space or use for.  All I need is a case (have a extra 550watt psu) and I would have a amd 64 3500 with a 850xtpe and 2gb or ram system with no need to cannibalize an existing system for optical drives either as I have 2 dvd burner drives not in use as well as a 250gb hard drive.  But I do not really know what I would do with it.  I guess I could use it to try out different Linux varieties but I already have another system that I sort of do that on now and don't think I want to spend even more time on doing that.

Also I wonder what kind of electric bill I could get if I hooked up all my extra stuff at the same time.  Things like an old 2000+ cpu or some old p3's or celerons.   Maybe I should just throw some pc parts out, like I will ever use most of these old things.

    Well,

I think I would give the PC away to someone who can use it, but I hate spending money... my big delema, lol... But... I think I have changed my mind. I never got into Linux and stuff. I have a laptop if I need a second computer (Pentium M 1.5Ghz).

OK I decided to let my system collect dust.

One good way to get into Linux and use your older computer at the same time is to make a firewall out of it.  Look for "www.Smoothwall.org, all you need is an old computer with a small amount of memory (maybe 512 or less) and an extra ethernet card.

Re: Is it worth it $$$$ OLD SYSTEM...

My system is an Athlon XP 2500+, 1Gb DDR333, with an X800gto AGP which is just a tad slower than a 7600gt... It plays Oblivion on high settings at 1280x1024, no AA, at about 20fps outside.  It's not THAT bad of a system, but I have an AM2 mobo with agp slot and a 4000+ Brisbane coming tomorrow from newegg.

My answer is: Get the cpu for 25 bucks, get a cheapo 350watt psu for 10 bucks, get some cheap ram... Then sell it in the paper to some newb as the "godliest gaming rig" for like 350 or 400 bucks...

If that 7600 is just laying around, I might take it off your hands...
