    Should I upgrade to a Pentium 4?

    I have an Intel Celeron 2.8ghz in a Socket 478, and was thinking about upgrading to a Pentium 4 2.8ghz. Would I notice a difference in performance or would it just be a waste of time and money?

    Waste of time and money... In most applications you wouldn't see much of a performance boost at all.. In games, you might see 5-10% because of the added cache.. But other than that, there would be no difference..  And most likely, you wouldn't even notice at all..

    I'd strongly suggest replacing the motherboard..

    I never recommend people run RAID-5 with onboard chipsets.

    pentium 4 is already an outdated tech ( before like 2003)

    Today's CPUs are the Core 2 Cuos and the Athlon 64 X2

    Future ( late 2007+) we will have the phenoms and penryns

    Re: Should I upgrade to a Pentium 4?

    Back then, the main difference between Celeron's and Pentium's was the amount of L2 cache. Your Celeron has 128KB of L2 cache while the P4 that would fit that socket has 512MB L2 cache - almost 4 times as much. It would be enough to make a difference but like Sid said, not much of a noticeable one. A theoretic difference is not the same as the actual amount of noticeable difference you will personally experience.

    Your best bet is to save your money and put together a newer system. I have upgraded quite a few people from older Celeron/PentiumAMD K6 chips to dual core setup's -- that does make a noticeable difference, a big difference!

    that is 128 -> 512 KiB

    Still saveup to get athlon 63 x2 or Core 2

    Core 2's are still part of the celeron family

    Nah man, There isn't a single Celeron in the Core 2 family.

    Celeron went from Celeron to Celeron D and back to plain old Celeron.

    What will you do with the computer? It's really not good to waste your budget on P4 today.

    I'd say yes, if parts and labor cost you $25 or less, otherwise its actually more trouble than it's worth.

    Re: Should I upgrade to a Pentium 4?

    Alright thanks guys. I was just gonna upgrade a little bit to hold me off for another 6 months or so until I build a new rig. I don't play much games on my current, but when I build the new one, I'm gonna make it a gaming rig.
