any sites with the COMPATIBILITY CHECKER function?

    ALO!

Does any1 know a site where you add, Lets say a model XXPRQ 9000* MOBO to the cart, and it gives you a list of all the compatible graphics cards/PSUs/Processors...etc. ???

basically an automated compatibility checker, so when you get the parts, you won't have non compatible parts.....compatible...let me say compatible one more time....tnx all

    *fictional-plz do not sue me

Re: any sites with the COMPATIBILITY CHECKER funct

I heard one site did that but I don't know how reliable it is--and the name eludes me.

As sparker mentioned, we are here to help. The best thing to look for in compatability is:

    • SATA or PATA
    • Socket type
    • Support CPU families
    • Memory Max
    • Type of Memory (see also mobo's product page to see recommended compatible memories)
    • SLI/crossfire or not
    • Main Power connector (20 vs 24 cs 20+4)
    • Vista Certified?

I think that should cover most of the compatibility issues... Might post up more when I think of them. Best bet is to post up your needs and we can give you suggestions.

    What we will need:

    • Budget
    • Brand preferences (AMD/Intel, Nvidia/ATI)
    • Purpose, what you will do with it mostly
    • When you are planning on getting this
    • Do you need a case/optical drive/monitor/keyboard/mouse, and is this included in the budget?
    • OS?

Re: any sites with the COMPATIBILITY CHECKER funct

hey guys (I REALLY need to stop saying that)

Basically, i've built about 4 systems (with 1 prob.-PSU not powerfull enuf for 1) everything else has worked great so far,

wanna get a new sys. i'll use it mostly for flash/illustrator/photoshop/3dmax type software with a cintiq (wacom)

i'm kind of thinking about playing bioshock, and other FPSs but am not sure since the NEW me wants to give up game addiction+TV and concentrate more on art projects...

i've Burnt 2 Asus mobo so far, 1 was my fault, the other cuz i used it for a long  time...

switch from AMD to intel, but i REALLY REALLY do not care about names, as long as it performs great,

for the budget i'm thinking about 2,000 but i'll spend more if i really have to, i don't need a monitor or a keyboard/mouse

i know that is vague but really it has been my experience that BRAND NAMES do not make a difference (from my pricewatch. com days when stuff came to me in a brown REused box, but the parts worked great) (most from Newegg, early days, it was pricewatch)

    hope ur not confused yet.

    needs:

    SILENT!!!!!

    Powerful...(emphasis on graphic/video card)

i'm thinking about 2Gigs of RAM

i'm guessing onboard sound will do...

lets see...i'm also thinking about a 500wt PSU (too little?)

umm.....and the basics (MOBO, GraphicsCard, DVD/CD rw) and a 250GB HD?

and i GUESS a processor+fan if i have to have 1 for the comp. to run...

    (no floppy/2nd HD/soundcard/other c**p needed)

see this is where (btw sry 4da long post) i just give up, i keep thinking that maybe i should just Waste/spend my money on an Alienware or something since THOSE guys would know what memory will work great with what MOBO/video card etc.

again sorry for wasting about 2 min. of ur life, i guess the CD/DVD doesn't  matter so much (since i could use the one i have but it's like 3 cents right now, so...i'll just buy1

i do Not want the pointless Water cooling system or a fancy case

i HATE the cases that come with a DOOR, WHAT IS THE POINT? the CD/DVD just hits it when it opens, I NEVER EVER lock it...

oh also, windows XP (home i guess...) no floppy needed, no speaker/webcam/headphones/monitor...

tnx guys. all from newegg of course

Re: any sites with the COMPATIBILITY CHECKER funct

2K is a great number to play with. I would advise 2 drives, one for your data and one for your OS, minimum. RAID is nice but only if you are up to it.

Don't bother with Alienware when you have your own tech support here :-) and we don't charge for labor.

I think you've answered all the questions that are needed, give me a few to look around newegg for ya.

Re: any sites with the COMPATIBILITY CHECKER funct

I just got bioshock and love it. I can play it on high setting with the rig in my sig. The system in my sig does video encoding very well about 13 mins to turn a 400mb avi into a dvd compliant 700mb mpeg.

So I figure I'll put you into a E6750 which is a 2.66 core2duo that is really a solid processor. Let me get some stuff together and list it for you

GENERIC 18" 2-Head Red SATA (SERIAL ATA 150) Cable Model SERIAL ATA 18 - OEM $2.89

Total (including instant savings--which might not last) $1,848.78

    Instant savings: $95

    Factoring out savings:  $1,943.78

If you want to save some green, definitely you can loose some on the video card. That thing is a beast but I figured you'd want over kill on video card and since you are willing to go a little bit more on the budget, I figure why not? I'm a huge fan of BFG but I've heard great things from EVGA. The case is a very popular one with lots of cooling and no doors *grin*

Seagate drives have their 5 year warranty which is hard to beat (IMO). CPU is another one that you could save some money, but it's all up to you. That P35 mobo doesn't have SLI capabilities because I don't believe in it, and you can save some money not investing in it. Can't go wrong with that memory either.

I've heard good things from LG, and I like the brand. Artic Silver will be needed to use that after market heat sink and the extra sata cable for the optical drive (your mobo comes with 2 already).

Re: any sites with the COMPATIBILITY CHECKER funct

You will not get a silent 8800 unless you go with a full watercooling system. That will add about 300-600 to the system.

Root the bfg card you picked is a watercooled card its not a silent one.

I would keep everything about roots build but 2 things. I would change out the processor to the E6750 as its cheaper and faster.

    Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6750 - Retail  199.99

I would replace that bfg water cooled card with a regular 8800 GTX

    EVGA 768-P2-N835-AR GeForce 8800GTX 768MB 384-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail  609.99  Less $20 MIR  589.99.

The above card comes overclocked to 621mhz clock.

This should give you a real nice graphics build and gaming build. Just add up roots stuff with my stuff less his cpu and you should come up with a decent price and a real good build.

But you GUYS made me smile

Thank you so much for the quick reply

quick question-isn't the whole point of SLI to run 2 at the same time?

would you get mad if i ask another person here to post another setup (so i could have an option.

again THANKS a lot for the research, maybe i can repay you, go to theshero.com

Re: any sites with the COMPATIBILITY CHECKER funct

    *Does a double take*

It is watercooled. Huh. Totally spaced out on that one.

What I tell ya? Video Card and CPU were going to be changed!

    Thanks Sparker.

And Shero, that's what we are here for |o.O| I'll have to check out that link. In the mean time, don't go away. Stick around! This community is still growing and we could always use another friendly face. And there are plenty of things that will make a depressed man smile here.

Keep us updated on this project of yours, if you decide to build your own and we aren't offended at all if you ask other people. And if you find anyone who is, just point'em out to me and I"ll show'em. It's your money, not ours.  :-)

EDIT: that dot is really annoying *grin*

Re: any sites with the COMPATIBILITY CHECKER funct

Actually with SLI if you sli 2 8800 GTS you won't get the same performance if you get one 8800 GTX card. Same goes if you SLI 2 8800 GTX's you won't get the same performance if you get and 8800 Ultra.

So right now a single card solution is the way to go till they get sli worked out in the games and drivers.

Yup, thats why it isn't worth it IMO. The only exception to this is if you want to go bleeding edge... 2 of those BFG bad boys. But good luck with that one, some mobo's aren't built with proper spacing for SLI in mind.

Re: any sites with the COMPATIBILITY CHECKER funct

oh ok, do you guys mind pasting the same setup (from the above post) with some changes?

i guess a water cooling system is good (i always thought it's 4show)

also what about this card? (i just want to know how much diff it'll make)

evga 768-P2-N831-AR GeForce8800GTX 768MB 384-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Read SLI Supported Video Card

i guess if you don't mind posting the ULTRA one (Graphics card) it'd be awesome

what about the quad processors??? and have you guys seen the PSU that has detachable cables (or something similar) so there won't be any extra cables? (i just heard about it)

    again. tnx alot

Re: any sites with the COMPATIBILITY CHECKER funct

PSU thing is called modular cabling. I'd recommend this one:

    SILVERSTONE ST75F ATX12V / EPS12V 750W Power Supply - Retail 160$

You could probably wait on quad core. Personally I don't think it's worth it just yet. The gaming industry is still adapting to dual core. You have to right applications to specifically utilize the multiple cores. I'd hold off until the 'true' quad cores come (and lower in price).

I didn't realize that was water cooled, and for you I wouldn't suggest water cooling. Unless you just want to go head first into it.

That vid card is a popular one and is fine. It's up to you on how much you want to spend.

What size monitor do you have?

Also, I recommend getting the Corsair 620HX 620W PSU from zipzoomfly.com for only $147. It's modular and has gotten pretty good reviews from hardware sites:

    Corsair HX620 620W PSU - $147

    [Gaming Rig] Win XP Pro || Intel E6400 @ 3.2Ghz || GA-965P-DS3 Rev 1.0 Mobo || 2 x 1GB G.Skill DDR2 800 RAM || Seagate 160GB, 400GB, & 1TB HDD || Maxtor 320GB HDD || NEC ND3550A DVD-RW || nVidia 7900GS 256MB PCI-E || Corsair 520HX PSU || Antec P180
