    Karma? Points?

Maybe I did a cruddy search, but I couldn't find anyone else bringing this up:

I noticed a lot of websites have what's called a karma system.  Where forum members can spend accumulated karma on another user for making a quality post, having a good idea, or solving their problem.  I'm not sure if this forum technology has a plug-in for that sort of thing, but I imagine it would - it's a rather popular system.

Perhaps, if not that, then some kind of recognition system would be nice.  Just my thoughts.

    Re: Karma? Points?

The forum has experimented with points systems in the past and found them flawed..Could see one again in the future if the bugs can be ironed out.

Bet you can't beat Scoops at trivia. Click the green thingy and give it a try.

looks like JC's announcement about them going away for awhile is gone now.  Like Volfy says they might come back if the lil problems can be ironed out.  Yes

    Re: Karma? Points?

I seem to remember over at ABXZone them using a similar point system a few years back. It was a mess and they dumped it after about a month. Many lusted after points and that became the coin of the relm instead of it being a helping community.

I think we have a good balance here, there is recognition for those that help by the Uber program and I only see a very few that are chasing post count by posting a bunch of one liners.

    Re: Karma? Points?

I'm not sure I understand.  If it's a good implementation, one only gets points when others give it to them.  And others would only give points if they found the post benefitial.  But, I suppose it's too difficult to prevent people from making another account on a proxy and giving themselves a ton of points.

In a perfect world that would work perfectly.  In the real friends give points to friends and some sillies go as far as making ghost accounts just to award themselves points.  That is where the problems creep in.  I have said before the only site I have seen doing this where it works is evga.com and at their site only mods can give a poster a point and there is no questioning their right to give points or not to.

    Re: Karma? Points?

I was just thinking about this today... Not that I think on things like this while I'm at work. *cough*

Does anyone else agree with me that it'd be nice to have an Amazon type rating system?

"10 out of 25 people thought this post was helpful"

EDIT: I honestly don't care about points. I'm more concerned about post quality. If someone makes great posts, let them gain the respect of the community over time... don't give them a number below their avatar. That's what the "contributor" thing is for.

I like that idea. Newegg.com does the same things for their comments, so that's an even bigger plus.
