Efficently cool your 8800 series card. (-10c drop in temps)

Well here is my contribution, If you have a 80mm fan or smaller, just attach it to the rear of your empty pci slots. or you can buy a system blower like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835129025

the fan i used blows 75cfm and has an excellent controller. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835999111

    Smart.

Blowing in or out?  You have fans on the front of that case?

    10C Indifferent

You must have had poor airflow in your case for a single fan to bring your temps down that much...

What were your CPU temps before this "mod"?

Re: Efficently cool your 8800 series card. (-10c drop in temps)

    my cpu is @ 33c idle and 60c load @ 3.2ghz

my GPU used to be 60c idle and 75c load

now its @ 50c idle and 66c load  with 40% fan speed on the gpu, also 40% fan speed on the rear fan blowing out.

    I wouldnt say i have poor ventalation..... 1x 120mm lower intake (90cfm), 1x 120mm rear exhaust (90cfm), 1x 120mm side intake (54cfm), 1x 80mm side intake (for the cpu), 1x 80mm rear lower exhaust (75cfm), 1x 120mm cpu fan on a Tt Big Typhoon (110 cfm)

Re: Efficently cool your 8800 series card. (-10c drop in temps)

Oh, yes, adding a few ventilation fans can really drop the temps on those beasts.  My 7900gt dropped at least 15 degrees with a few fans...

But that's not ghetto.  My setup is ghetto; I used a few fan boxes to create a shroud from my side fan that channels the air flow directly into the video card's intake.  I'd post pics, but I'm too lazy to host them Stick out tongue.

Re: Efficently cool your 8800 series card. (-10c drop in temps)

The problem with most video cards and cases it that heat ( A LOT of it) gets trapped underneath the video card, and although the 8800 series vents out the case, there are 5 slots on the plastic cover that recycles warm air back in the case. The average dropped temps on a fan mod like this is -10c

Re: Efficently cool your 8800 series card. (-10c drop in temps)

The question them becomes...what's more important to you..if your card is stable and temps aren't a concern, is the extra noise worth it?

My card runs at 35C idle, 50C max under load, and I still can't hear my fans...that, in my opinion, is a worthy change (5 fans in the machine, 4 of which are 120mm).

Re: Efficently cool your 8800 series card. (-10c drop in temps)

There is no extra noise, all my fans run 40% speed and its a very low hum. (i have 6 fans)

Re: Efficently cool your 8800 series card. (-10c drop in temps)

I modded my side panel instead. Used a Dremel to drill holes for the fan screws and a nibbler to cut out an openning for the fan. I would of used a Dremel instead of the nibbler but I do not have much control to get a clean cut. Though I have tried the side-fan as an exhaust and intake.....the intake did a better job of keeping my video card cool. The exhaust brought the temp down to one degree but after an hour or so of playing, the frame rates started to drop when the video card got hot. The intake kept my card consistantly cool.

yeah I would make sure you get similar in and out airflows to help with cooling

this might also help temps.  I've tried it and it does work.

Re: Efficently cool your 8800 series card. (-10c drop in temps)

I used a little slot fan like this one from Newegg....  (mine doesn't have an adjustable speed like the one from the Egg)

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811999704

I also modified it to run on 5V instead of 12V so its very quiet.  Stock temps were 57idle/69load and now i'm at 52idle/58load in a 72F room.

I personally think thats a ghettomod.  And for us SLi users it dosent work.  Im running a Gigabyte 3D Aurora and my 8800 GTses (Superclocked 320MB) used to idle at about 80 C

My Solution: Rivatuner and set the fans to 75% constant unless loaded, then they amp up to about 90.  After a whyle i just set them to 85 Constant, cause they never go past the 75% setting.  This dropped temps from 80 Idle to 53 and 90 Loaded to 70.

it may be a ghettomod but it does help(the slot fan mod that is)  59 c idle to 50 c idle with 59% fan.  W/ fan @ 100% using xp( because i can't find a overclocking program that works right with VISTA, ntune sucks and rivatuner is not a solution as of yet with vista.) 47 c idle.  this is with the antec 900 case w/ fans on medium. The slot cooler blows hot air out the back and not into the case. For less then 10.00 why not?

Ive done a Artic Silver 5 mod on my video card ( most manufactures wont viod warrenty on your card if you do this ) and that Has helped about 5 c load. I do liek this idea though for there is never "cool enough" to me. These 8800 get to darn HOT!

Re: Efficently cool your 8800 series card. (-10c drop in temps)

If i were to place a fan on the side of my case blowing in the general area that is underneath my 8800, would I benefit best from hot or cool air?

I know this is where the 8800 intakes from, so intake would make sense. But given that some exhaust escapes into this dead spot at the bottom, exhaust couldn't be such a bad idea either.. Its a ton warmer at the bottom of my case than everywhere else.
