Re: [help]my p4=molten lava
Even a fanless heatsink will do better than the stock heatsink simply because it can transfer and spread the heat better. The heat will dissipate into the air regardless. YES, it does work better if you have good airflow, but I wouldn't fret if you don't. BUT, if you think you would do better with a heatsink with a fan, I highly recommend the Zalman brand coolers. You'll spend about the same amount on one of these as you would on that Thermalright ultra 120....just a thought.

Re: [help]my p4=molten lava
I've never been a fan of the passive (no fan) cooling design. If I went with one of these, I'd probably feel better if I had a fan on it or nearby. Possibly an Antec SpotCool Fan which you can attach pretty much anywhere in your case (usually to a motherboard screw) and bend the neck of it to blow directly on the heatsink....just a thought.

Re: [help]my p4=molten lava
What about the stock Pentium 4 heatsink? You say you're running a C2D heatsink, maybe that's the problem. Just a thought, I'm not an expert by any means here...

Re: [help]my p4=molten lava
Whatever you do, dont go fanless, imho its not a good idea, and indeed it could dimenish the lifespan of the chip. I use ArcticSilver 5 heatsink, its expensive for a heatsink at 10 buckeroos US a tube but its really great. Never failed me.

Re: [help]my p4=molten lava
hmm did not think about the c2d heatsink being a problem..they do run cooler and maybe intel made a heatsink that didnt have to work as hard....will look into that....

Re: [help]my p4=molten lava
I've found stock heatsinks suck. I wouldn't be suprised if the heatsink lost its heatsinknesss :-p

Re: [help]my p4=molten lava
Yeowch. I have a stock C2D heat sink running on a E6420, and it keeps the idle temps right around 48C. Something's up, did you use any thermal compound to mount the HSF? Does it have a good solid seat on the CPU?
RAWR!

Re: [help]my p4=molten lava
Now you see where the nickname Pres hott came from. I've got one, a 551 3.4 clocked to 4.0 on water in my living room. The AC comes on early in the season and last winter saved a bunch on heat!

LOL Yeah, the looking for leaks thing is regularly would probably be my down fall if I got a LC system as well....as well as the fact that I really don't need one.
