The upscaling on these players is 2nd to none. Ir really makes it hard to see the difference between old DVD and the new HD ones. Getting 50 bucks back is even better!!

Good news for those of us that bought the hd-dvd drives at Best Buy: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmcat147600050717&type=category&DCMP=rdr0001332

This means not only did I get a fairly cheap upscaling dvd player (plus the 7 total hd-dvd discs) I will get another $50 BB gift certificate. I had a automated voice mail message today from BB that stated what the link I posted says (they gave the address to type in www.bestbuy/hddvd) telling me the gift certificate should be received by May 1st.

that's too bad. i don't understand why studios can't release titles on both HD-DVD and blu ray. let the people choose which medium they want to use.

I agree with Mikeduffy13 THey should release both versions... Blu-ray i have no problem with but, they should realse both copys of hd-dvd and blu ray. One should be maybe 10 bucks cheaper or something like that

That's what we like to think...they do control it to a degree:

Example Scenario:

"Hey honey, Bill down the street has this awesome blu-ray disc player thingy. Makes his movies look so crisp. I think I'm going to run out and buy one too, don't want him outdoing us now do we?...I'll be back before dinner."

It'll be a chain reaction albeit initially slow.

im sticking with regular dvd's until they cost more then blu-ray disk or cost the same price. The war isnt over until the consumers decide :) not some top level executives

I only know a few people who would pay the current prices for blu-ray movies as they are right now and I'm not one of them. I'm only talking about the movies as I already own a PS3 and I still buy about 4 to 6 dvds a month. I own only 3 BR movies and they were all gifts. If the prices do go up they will simply sell less and in the long run probably decrease their profit.

Short answer, no I don't think they will go up.

Toshiba has officially killed HD DVD, they reported yesterday that they would cease production of all HD DVD players, recorders, and media, effectivley handing Blu-Ray a victory.

No matter what I think Blu-Ray will beat DVDs... but DVD have been here for such a short time! Killing them off now would be... way to quick?

I guess now blu-ray can mount the real war of trying to take on regular dvd's. They may not fair quite as well in that battle and it will take much longer to win out in that one.

gotta agree with sjr on this one,,it'll be a long war against dvd,,,we'll probably see some price reduction on blu-ray, and i'm thinking quite a bit if they wanna win out on dvd,,,i know myself, i'm not willing to pay the price of blu-ray for the $ to performance ratio as it is,,,,,,,

I've been talking to my wife about getting an HD DVD player and now I'm glad I was loosing the discussion. I told her about this last night after finding out and told her that down the line I'll just go for a PS3 to get more functionality out of it as so many others have stated here. Too bad really. I'd never seen any difference. I did like the much lower price of HD DVD equip. though.

MS was very much hedging as they did not include a HD DVD in the Xbox just an option to have it as an add on, I would think if they would have included it the blu-ray vs hd dvd battle would still be going on at a likely 50/50 market share as there are more xbox 360's around than p3's.
There are already rumors that the xbox will have a blu-ray option as soon as May.

Not just rumor, MS released a press statement a few weeks back saying if the market was there for a BluRay addon for the 360 they will do one. The HD-DVD drive sold so poorly I do not know if there is a market. Stand alone units are always better for pic quality and sound. So not really sure this will effect the console war at all. But I know a few people that are thinking if they buy a BluRay player they might as well just get a PS3. So Sony will also get a couple few game sales from people like that which can only help them.
