Computers capable of mimicking the human brain's power and efficiency could be just 10 years off, according to a leading researcher at IBM.

According to the researcher, Dharmendra Modha, the manager of IBM's cognitive computing initiative, scientists from his company and some of the world's most prestigious universities have already managed to simulate the computing complexity of the feline cortex, a feat that could augur a day not too far off when it will be possible to ramp up to what the human brain can accomplish.

The aim: reverse-engineer the human brain and learn its computational algorithms. And then deploy them in a bid to solve some of the world's most complicated computing problems.

Hope the IBM reserchers will finally make this come true, but computering rivals human brain....WOW...this sounds horrible

Seems like a method used by a lot of junk companies and good companies, to make something better. But does it?

My first thoughts are: "You just added an additional layer of metal onto what ever it is I am using.. No matter how good that metal is. It just increased the resistance, thus Instant signal degradation. So in a sense that would mean that if you had to choose between the same wire from the same company and one was gold plated, the none gold plated one was actually better.

My second thought it: "Gold is a better conductor then some metals and thus it will make better contact.. but that gold is just touching Copper or aluminum, so the great conductor is touching the bad conductor, thus we are met with the same result... a lower signal since the gold added increased resistance if it had not been there at all."

Now if it is Not gold plated, but gold plug then that makes a but more sense, but Copper is a better conductor then gold so why not just stick with that.

Now 1 direct benefit of gold plating is gold does not corrode, (at least not by anything it will ever come in contact with in most offices and homes.) So there is one benefit to gold plating.

a passing thought I had was that gold is maliable so maybe i make better contact since it can mold to what it touches, but that is only pure pure pure pure gold.. even if the gold is 99.99% pure it does not take on the "Play Doh" characteristics.

If a wire is ALL gold, that would be better then all aluminum, but then it would be more expensive and perform worse then an aluminum capped copper wire. especially at long lengths.

So is Gold really Snake Oil?

Pentium Dual-Core vs AMD Phenom X4

I am planning a cpu upgrade.
In the Internet world, Drupal is not as bad as it sounds. The open-source software package helps people create and manage their Web sites. And this week, a new WhiteHouse.gov site arrived that had been built via the Drupal code.
Google might drop Chrome OS beta as a Windows 7 spoiler? He also got a couple of questions for us:

Was Chrome OS simply a version of Linux with the Chrome browser fused into it?

Would it be a netbook OS only?

How would it differ from Android?

Would Chrome OS even be a true “operating system,” in the sense we understand that term today?

Meanwhile, what do you expect Apple to do in honor of next week’s Windows 7 launch?(The full story)

Checkout the Tom's Hardware article.

Here's a snippet of the conclusion:

First, depending on the priorities of the system builder from which
you buy, expect to see Clarksfield-based notebooks at a variety of
different power profiles. The CPU is one part of the equation, but it’s
certainly not the determinant of efficiency in a build with discrete
graphics. At the end of the day, Core i7-920XM is rated at 55W—10W
higher than the flagship Core 2 Extreme—and the new CPU has more technology
built-in to keep it closer to that power envelope for longer. From
Hyper-Threading to Turbo Boost, you can expect better performance in a
wider range of applications than any mobile processor we’ve ever seen, but at higher power consumption numbers.

Secondly, for those of you more attuned to the thin and light
designs, Arrandale is the platform you’ll want to use while watching
DVDs on an airplane or working away from a power outlet. That’s where
the power consumption will become much more important to the platform’s
success. Come January, it's going to be that much harder to make inroads against Intel's mobile lineup.

Any scuttlebutt on Windows 8?

Its still early. checks and creating a smarter version of the firmware . Of course, that still
leaves the time that it takes Windows to start up, but Microsoft has been
working on that, too, and claims that Windows 7 starts up in about 20 seconds,
