So, more simulations can be done simultaneously?

Yup. They're studying multiple proteins simultaneously..

products:

Is that the whole point of it?

Protein simulation

products:

And by simulating they are trying to find matches between simulated results and protein conformations seen in known desease states?

Not exactly.. It's not possible to "see" some proteins fold since they can happen faster than a blink of an eye.. And even if you did "see" them in a microscope, you still have absolutely no idea what causes it to "fold".. So you'd have no idea what causes it to "misfold".. The problem of protein folding needs to be approached from two directions.. You have the people in the lab who can see proteins fold and misfold without much understanding at the atomic level of what's going on.. And then you have computers which are running atomic level simulations of protein folding that need to be connected to the bigger picture..

So the problems that they're having is

No matter how much you study something under a microscope, you can't really determine what's going on at the atomic level.. And just because you see something does not mean you have any idea why it happens or why it doesn't happen..

The amount of computation required to simulate everything at the atomic level is astronomical. You can't simulate every atom in somebody's entire brain at the atomic level to determine why they get alzheimer's, it would take computers thousands and thousands of years.. There's just too much computation...

So certainly Folding@home alone is not the answer..

And certainly scientists in a lab alone is not the anwer..

The problems of protein folding have traditionally been attacked from the right with scientists in a lab poking and prodding.. But no matter how much they look at it and how much they prod at it, they can't 100% determine why proteins fold or misfold because they can't see what's really going on behind the scene.. Even worse, these scientists can get millions and millions and millions of your dollars and no matter what they do, they may never find the solution using this method alone..

Folding@home starts the attack on the problem from the left.. Instead of starting at the bigger picture and doing guess&check to figure out why it's broken, you start at the absolute smallest level (subatomic) and then build your way up to larger and larger scales.

Despite folding@home and all the scientist's work, there's still this grey no-man's-land in the middle where folding@home doesn't reach and the scientists in the lab can't reach.. That's where the solution to the problem is.. However, with each passing day, folding@home clears up more of the grey area on the left and advancing technology in high end labs clear up the grey area on the right.. With the idea of eventually meeting in the middle somewhere where we can absolutely solve any protein folding problems no matter how big or small they are which with it comes the cures to hundreds of diseases..

Folding@home continually publishes papers and their findings.. Those papers combined with papers from scientific findings in the lab is where real break throughs in cures for these diseases happen..

products:

Second, hm... my coomputer is mostly sleeping caz I want to save power.
Okay, I read everything on the frist page, but I would like to know how using multiple computers can help. I understand the molecular biology or biochemistry of DNA, protein and protein foldeing, but what I don't get is where and in what way distributing simulation operations to multiple computers can be of any help. So, more simulations can be done simultaneously? Is that the whole point of it? And by simulating they are trying to find matches between simulated results and protein conformations seen in known desease states?

If you ever want to get a UPS to protect your systems that are running 24/7 so they can keep going even when the power is out.. Definitely go with APC, their UPS systems are absolutely amazing and darn fun to play with. Even the 80 dolalr models let you use the PowerChute software (running great in 64-bit Vista here) to fine tune the exact voltages of when the UPS switches over to battery backup.. Really cool stuff.

I agree about APC, Have always had good luck with them.
