Hello all,
I joined this forum just so that I could voice a very similar idea (it seems I have been beaten to the punch). The main differences with my idea:

I would like the eggipedia to have a section for specific products with two pages for each (take your pick of names): The Skinny; where a "mom friendly" description of the pros, cons, compatabilities and incompatabilites (in a boolean manner, "yes this board will work with this cpu", no confusing breakdown of why) of any given product can be found, and The Fat; where all of the technical issues (manufacturer driver links, workarounds to known problems, specs that didn't make it on the specs tab, etc) can be collected.
The trick is, for this to be usefull the articles must be viewable from a single click from the product page on newegg propper and without registration.

This idea came to me today when shopping for CPU heatsinks. They're all huge nowadays (rediculously so in many cases), and a sizable number of the posted reviews say "make sure this will fit in your case". However, the standoff distance between the mobo tray and the mobo itself is never specified, nor is the depth of the CPU+mobo, nor is the distance from the mobo tray to the inside edge of the case, so how is one to know? I realize that I could figure it out without too much work, but I've been in the game for a long time (a decade or so, not that long in some games, but think about it in terms of moores law) and have a pretty good idea of how it all works, I think those sorts of questions should be abstracted so that they're simple enough for the christmas shopping mom to say "yes, this will fit in johnny's computer" provided of course that johnny tells her what he currently has.

It'd be neat to integrate that with order history too (this could just be the software engineer in me talking now) so members of eggxpert can go to a section with their recent purchase listed out and comment on the various compatibilites and overall performance of the resulting system, which would then update the appropriate eggipedia pages' compatabilites sections. It could also be used as a source of reccommendation data (at this point I know I'm just nerdgasming, but I enjoy thinking of designs for this kind of thing), imagine that instead of a "customers who bought this also bought" section that was based on individual items it could make reccommendations based on the compatabilities and overall style of system (htpc/gaming/silent/etc) that the user has been shopping for so far. Give a small discount on the next purchase for people who write good compatability reviews.

Until EggXpert gets some extra cycles, and this project gets bumped up on their to-do-list (which is large right now), no Eggipedia until then.

I've heard this has been in the works well before I had suggested the idea, so hopefully there has already been some progress on this.

I wish I could code it myself (and had the time to do it).

Until EggXpert gets some extra cycles, and this project gets bumped up on their to-do-list (which is large right now), no Eggipedia until then.

EggiPedia I like it now can you get the powers that be to approve all of this. Then who's going to main line it and see that the ball gets rolling in the right direction? Any volunteers root your idea & a really great 1 too. Kuddo's to you root!

They have done something like this project in that they archive and share all their tech tips for along time now. The tech tips I linked to are for Windows XP but the site has tons of great info for noobs to old timers.

I just went ahead and subscribed to there rss feeds for the newsletter and news. This looks like some great information to have coming in. I look at www.dailytech.com on a daily basis and see what all is out there. Thats a great site as well.

Heh, the reason I get any work done at the office is that I run Synergy with a 2-screen Vista workstation and a 1-screen XP workstation. I have 1 window for system/server management, 1 for e-mail, and 1 for web browsers where I EggXpert all day long :p

Yeah, thats the one thing I'm worried about. Could take way too many cycles to get it off the ground, but who knows. Maybe wikipedia has already done the leg work... I'm not much of a website coder, so wouldn't know.

GmsCool, thanks for posting the info about the Volt/Ohm meter, maybe I can use it on my new project. I'm learning to build solar panels. Everything solar is my new passion. Photovoltaic cells are so cool. The future is here. If this would have been implemented before, we could have save ourself at least a war.

Root, I really liked this Eggipidia concept, maybe it is not so hard to implement. Lets wait for the Admins opinion.
