Don't even think of trying it. You will completely waste your money. However, you can get more use from that system by switching to a not so resource hungry version of Linux. Have somebody give/make you a copy of PCLinuxOS. Its a CD you can boot your computer on and it will run like a hard drive. You'll be amazed how well your computer will run. Then if you like it, you can install it permanently using the live install option that sits on the desktop of PCLinuxOS. (yes it will wipe the hard drive by doing it. So make sure it's what you want to do)

xp will run on that. It will be more reliable than ME but it'll be pretty slow with that little memory.

Re: External hard drive and PC compatability

Yea, I agree with the first post. It might be time to simply update your whole rig. You should be able to find decent setups on eBay, or on newegg, for complete towers for as little as $200, I know I sold my sister's old P4 Dell for about that much last year....

As for the drive, I didn't know they made them that small anymore. I mean, digital cameras have more memory than that nowadays. If you know there's an issue for 500MB, then don't push the barrier and 80 should be fine. But I can't even begin to imagine where you found something like that...

Just curious, what do you use ure PC for?

Re: External hard drive and PC compatability

Sorry dude, but i think its time for you to get an upgrade. Also, was that a 80 GB external drive?

Do you have a link to the external drive you are looking at? I would make sure it has the drivers that will work on windows 98/ME.

Good Luck

Re: External hard drive and PC compatability

Wow, where to begin? I don't want to offend you but you should literally set fire to anything you own that is remotely associated with Windows ME. You have 382Mb (or Megabytes of RAM). Is a new pc completely out of the question? And as for the external hard drive just try it...if it doesn't work...return it. Your problem is that you have a Dell 2100 with Windows ME for your OS. Oh and please tell me that you misunderstood your CPU.

Now I have to go smoke a cig to destress myself from your computer suffering. I pity you.

External hard drive and PC compatability

I'm considering adding a EXTERNAL hard drive to my PC...it will be a 80 mb drive... will windows ME handle this amount of mb..I know that there is problems with 500mb added drives..does the motherboard that I have installed have anything to do with this issue..I have 382 rams of memory also...
