External DVD drive and Region setting

For traveling I was wondering if I could use an external drive such as the Lite-On eTDU108-96 for watching Region 2 movies. Can the Lite-Ons be set to Region 2, it would stay that way permanently, without affecting the settings of my laptop and its drive? My HP laptop has Vista and my DVD player software will play any region. I just don't want to be stuck permanently on Region 2 and the external drive seem like a nice option and that one is small enough to not be a nuisance. I know there are drivers available to override region settings, but I would rather not do that.

Problem w/ Pioneer BDR-205BKS?!?

Hello out there,

I just purchased a Pioneer BDR-205BKS and am having some difficulties with it. I have placed it in an external enclosure(VANTEC NST-530S2), I have it plugged into a USB 2.0 port on my laptop. When I access it somtimes it does not read all the files on the disk. Somtime it does read all the files. I contacted Pioneer and they said that this drive isn't designed for an external enclosure. Does anyone have any experience with these problems? I am wondering if the drive is damaged somehow?

Looking for a good DL burner

I was looking at a few here but the last drive I brought a Samsung at a local best buy it was fine for about a year or so and it started to burn discs but not read what it just wrote or not seeing that a blank disc was in then after getting a few more burns from it it would make this loud grinding sound when spinning down the disc.

Anyways I'm looking for a decent replacement since I need a DL burner because I had to fall back on my old Pioneer A06.

optical drives crash the system

Two year old computer. Dust on the fans, in the corners, everywhere. So I turned off the machine, pulled the (3) harddrives, ps and LG bluray and the Asus DVD player and vacuumed the dust away. Put every thing back the way I found it and turned the computer back on. XP was gone. Error messages, blue screens. So I tryed formatting the WD 750 leaving the Raptor with my original xp intact. Installed xp on the 750. More error messages. Installed Vista on the 750 and vista worked then gave me the BSOD. Ejected the vista cd, pulled the sata cables off both optical drives and vista is up and running. The problem is, you can't connect either optical drives. If you do vista crashes immediately. The LG rep says its my Asus motherboard. Need your help....Thanks.

Cant decide. Is the plextor more expensive simply because it has lightscribe, or because it has lightscribe but is just the superior burner? The Sony is more popular both here and neweeg, but I question is this more because of cost to performance ratio or performance period? Popularity aside I believe I have heard a good share of happy plextor owners here. Which drive is likley to provide a more reliable burn, and which one is likley to provide a more reliable read on scratched discs?

Okay i need one more driver, I cannot discover what nvidia graphics card I have, so can I get a program from some one that can tell me what kind I got then I will post it and then tell you what graphics card it is?

Hey, I really use my Cd-drive anymore (who really does?) but it just stopped reading any disc, whether it's games, audio discs, or even empty. My computer detects it and everything looks fine, after I insert a disc nothing happens. After you see the ligt stop flashing and you click on the cd-drive it just says that there's no disc in there and it ejects, it was workin' the day before when my dad was using my computer to listenin' to the Rollin' Stones on his disc. Pretty old disc but still; I've tried using dust off on the laser with no luck.

Anyone know what I should do before I consider wasting money on a CD lens cleaner or even on another CD-Drive? Even when I first boot up my computer (1st boot is cd-drive) it freezes when it posts saying on the bottom "boot from CD", until I eject any CD that's inside.

Btw, it is plugged in correctly.

Blueray and Backing Up Games?

Hi ive been wondering this for while. I would like to know is it possable to backup games on BD-R's or is it only for movies? I ask cause i see that the Blueray disks are like 25GB each. The games i have on EA Link,Steam,D2D,GamersGate, etc. are more than my 4GB DVD-R's :(

So if i get a BD-R Drive and some BD-R disks can i backup my games?

Laptop DVD/CD drive question

I have a Gateway M-1412 laptop computer. I just did a fresh restore install of all software. The drive works great on software and audio cd's. Unfortunately, when I try movies, some dvd's work while others don't. These are all just regular store bought movies. These same dvd's work on all my other computer. Very strange. The dvd's are not even recognized on the e drive when I go to my computer. BTW, I am running Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I down loaded K-lite codec codes hoping that would help. It didn't. Does anyone have any ideas? Do you think a new drive would work? Thank you for the help.

SATA HDD, IDE Optical

Hey guys!

I'm looking for some of your expertise. Is it possible or even a good idea to run my two HDD using SATA and my two optical drives using the Mobo's IDE connections? I'm using an ASUS P7P55D Evo motherboard, I had intended to use my optical drives from my previous computer, but forgot that they aren't able to be connected via SATA.

Anyone know if this is even do-able?

Hi, I have an HP a6009n desktop and need a dvd burner, SATA connection, that is no more than 6.5" deep. The specs for all of the dvd burners I've looked at, don't give their physical dimensions and I need one that is no more than 6.5" deep, so it doesn't push up against the back of my PSU! I've got a couple of older IDE drives, but they're both 17.75 " deep and won't work. Can you steer me in the right direction , please? My current drive is a TSST TS-H652M and it is 6.5" deep.

Writing DVDs from MPEG Files

Hello everyone.

I bought the TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S202N from newegg, and it's great, except that it doesn't write DVDs. I am trying to get MPEG files from my computer onto a DVD-RW disk so that I can watch them on my home dvd player. I have tried multiple different softwares that have a free trial, but whenever I try to write to the DVD, it says "This location is read only. Please choose a different location." According to Samsung (the manufacturer of this drive), the device should be able to write DVDs. I have tried all the basic things, like updating the drivers, making sure the movie files on my computer were not corrupt, buying new DVD-RWs to make sure the ones I was using weren't corrupt, but nothing seems to fix the problem. I am open for any suggestions or ideas anyone might have, because I'm not really sure what to try next.

According to a news report on Nikkei's Tech-On website, the laser has an oscillation wavelength of 405nm and can write at speeds of 8x on triple- and quadruple-layer Blu-ray discs. This essentially means that, using the current technology, where a single layer of the disc can be fitted with 25GB of storage space, Sharp's laser could allow for 75GB or 100GB recordable discs.

I am in college now and we all know how things break so easily there and I have gotten a small reputation as something of a computer hardware whiz and know it all. So a girl told me that here macbook dvd drive no longer works and of course being the nice guy I am I tell her I can fix it as long as I can find a replacement part. So my question is what will work as a replacement? I was thinking the slim ones on the egg may work. I will get the model number next time I see her.

170mm Depth Bluray drive

Anyone know of any 170mm Depth Bluray drives? I'm replacing a CD/DVD drive in a system and the current drive I bought from newegg is too long (186mm).

Newegg doesn't list the physical dimensions on their drives. I bought a Liteon iHos104-06 that is 186mm. Some sites show the iHES208-08 as 170mm some show it as 186mm.
