Planned ~3K build: non-win7.

I have a copy of XP Pro x64 I purchased through my school for $5 dollars. I hate vista, and I have no real desire to upgrade to Windows 7.

That being said, my current computer I built was pretty top end in its day. (2003) 3.2 single core, P4p800s, 2g of ram, radeon 9800 agp card.

I'm ready for a new machine. I'm dying to keep running XP pro, but have the upgraded 64bit architecture and use all the equipment ive got my eyes on.

This is my question: Will I be able to get all these items working seamlessly together on an XP pro 64 bit platform.

Only suggestions I will not take are related to going AMD. Interested to hear about NVIDIA vs Ati though.

The Plan

Intel Corei7 960, or if the 975 extreme comes down a bit in 3 months, then possibly that.

Doing a system upgrade for better gaming

I'm looking at doing a system build / update that will keep me for the most part updated for another 2-3 years for gaming as I built this one back in 02/2008. I am looking to currently build a 64-Bid Win 7 OS system, using the following as new parts:

The current subtotal is about $1008.00 for all of the parts, and I've got a $1100'ish budget for the upgrades (give/take $100) . I'll still be using the same hard drive, screen, and DVD drive. I already have a copy of Win 7 Professional so i've got the O/S for it set up as well. My main concerns would be if this would all build together without any issues, and i'm wondering if i'll be getting the best "bang for my buck" with what i'd be spending. I'd love to hear opinions and/or suggestions to help save money with this build. :)

ok so first.. hello everyone, im kidna new here. ive been snooping around the forums since they started up, but never joined.

now down to business. I recently had to rma an evga 8800gt. in return i got an 9800GTX+ (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130339&Tpk=evga%209800gtx). your thinking pretty sweet, a free upgrade, right? well the problem is that my current setup cant accommodate the new card. currently i have a shuttle sg33g5, so the new card wont fit. So, since ive got this new card, i might as well upgrade some of the system. Im looking to buy a new tower, power supply and motherboard at least. I need your advice and knowledge in finding my new system. Money a moderate consideration. Im a college student, so as you know im kinda broke, but i dont wanna cheap out on what im getting. Id rather spend a few extra dollars and get quality. I am an engineering student so this computer is used for gaming, and heavy CAD. Heres the info on what ive got:

First PC Build (Option #2)

I know that I have already made a post asking for help on my first PC build. It turned out pretty good but I would like to ask help once again for a gaming/video editing system with a different set of parts since it's still a full month until I get to buy all my parts.

notes:

#1 this time i added an OS

#2 i'm using most of the same parts n0lxx recommended on my first build inquiry

#3 i chose a 850W corsair psu (tier 2 psu and also listed in slizone under dual gtx 275 cards)

#4 i chose the cm sniper case because of the black interior, the dust filters, and the huge bevel(? dunno the term) on the side behind the mobo

Let me know what you guys think and feel free to make suggestions if there are areas where I can save money. :]

Advice on a newbie's first build?

Well... I've never done this before and I've done a little bit of research, so hopefully I picked some decent parts. I was hoping some of you could tell me if these are all compatible. I'm looking to build a well-rounded desktop for basically everything (gaming, photo editing, graphic design, etc.) but at a low budget. I'd like to stay at this price or lower if possible, so if there's anything out there that's better for the price let me know :)

Start replacing parts, or scrap it and start over?

For the last several months I have been having severe computer issues. My computer loves to go to a blue screen memory dump, or just flat out freeze up. This has been chronically an issue for about the last 2 months. Outside of that, this computer setup from the day it was built has not been good for gaming. Not super demanding games like Warcraft have been an issue. With Warcraft in particular the game has constant performance issues, and at no point in time can I go into a capital or battleground where there are lots and lots of other people. That's almost instant WOW crash. Sometimes it will lag than crash. At other times the game it not even launch, and a crash report will generate in the game. Other times it will cause teh computer to go into Safe Mode.

Outside of that Mozilla also crashes all the time. I mean all the time. IE not quite as much but still crashes a good bit.

Here is what I have now.

AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+

Some kind of ASUS mobo, socket 939

1 G of RAM

Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS soundcard

Nvidia Ge Force 7800 GT videocard

Western Digital WD3200KS 300 Gig Hardrive

Windows Xp, SP 3

I am thinking on the chep side I might be good upgrading the RAM to 4 gigs. I am wondering if either my harddrive is not working right ( 1st thought ) and the second if may my videocard is not right. Is there a way I can test either before buying one or another....maybe both. Then I get to think that if I buy one, I might as well buy everything new. I would keep the case, sound card and PSU, replacing everything else with new. If I did that between the mobo, ram, cpu, and video card I would like to keep my costs under $700 if that reasonable.

Mostly my computer is for work ( MS applications, some phote editing etc. ) and nothing taxing. I would like whatever I do with fixing or replacing to give me a smooth and enjoyable experience with Warcraft, the Sims, Oblivion etc. I will never run the most system taxing games on this thing. I just want something relatively fast and absolutely stable.

Can anyone give me suggestions? 1st steps to try first before looking to buy new componets. For the sake of suggestions, can anyone suggest componets for the budget I note above.

$2K Gaming Build, Need Help Please

Hey Everyone,

I was wondering if I could get suggestions on the best gaming build I could get for $2,000, possibly more. I built my own computer back in 2004 and my how things have changed.

Did you know that now even video cards have CPU's?

I ask for help because of a few concerns:

1) Parts won't connect to each other
2) I'm going to buy the best video card money can buy and next month i's half price because the newst best video card just came out.
3) I'm going to buy hardware for a great price from a crappy company
4) Is the old technique of 1 HD for the OS and another for everything else still in use? If so I'm going to need a 2nd HD
5) Back in '04 I got two 10k Raptors, are the 10k's still that much better than the 7.2k's?

Also is it worth waiting for the Holiday sales aka. Black Friday, Cyber Monday, etc.? I'm afraid that while Newegg will have great deals I won't know what to buy or even what's a good deal (Brand, etc.)

I don't have any preferences really, I just want the best performance I can get for the budget I have.

I'm looking to upgrade from a Dell Dimension 4600 (purchased 7/03) into something a bit snappier. I'm a budget buyer, but I'm also trying to buy something that will work well for a goodly number of years into the future, so I'm not into buying the cheapest stuff if that means it will be obsolete in two years. I am basically looking to upgrade to a new case, motherboard, CPU, RAM, Power Supply, Mouse/Keyboard. I plan to continue to use my old HD. I currently have a nvidia 9800 GTX+ GPU but wouldn't mind picking up another one for SLI if it was within the budget of 2k. In the case I am looking for a larger case (easier to work on) in either Acrylic with Blue LED or clear sided w/ Blue LED. Blue LED Keyboard and mouse. I want the best bang for my buck so as much performance as I can get with something like that.

Re-Thinking things on an upgrade - build

Hi,

I just recently decided to upgrade my pc a bit, it is currently a Gigabyte MA770-UD3, 8GB OCZ Gold DDR2 800, Phenom 9600, nVidia GTX260.

I am having issue's with several applications and it seems to possibly be releated to the TLB issue in the 9600. So I ordered a Phenom II x4 955... this I am still waiting to arrive.

In the meantime decided to put to 750GB Seagate Barracuda's in Raid 0 and am having all kinds of issue's with this MB trying to get that to work, it sets up raid 0 couple times but then drive shows as a 2 drives in windows anyways or 1 large drive combining the 2 instead of 1 drive at 750GB.

To make a long story short I have been a long time AMD fan because of the price / performace difference with Intel products, however I am also a long time nVidia fan both video cards and chipsets on motherboards, I hate the fact that AMD and ATI are now one company because I have never had luck with ATI video cards, I like their TV Tuners, but will not buy a Radeon.

Looking at what's available this seems to leave me in a pickel... isn't there a decent nVidia based board out there for a Phenom II?

I do not have a ton of cash left to throw at this issue, I would like to use my existing ram until I am ready for DDR and I do not want a newer AMD based board either.

There have to have been other AMD CPU fans and Nvidia Chipset/Video card fans out there who have already dealt with this and hopefully can offer some tips or perhaps motherboards that would do, if not I guess I am just dumping AMD because I do not want to deal with their chipsets and ATI video cards...

Okay I got a list for my budget gaming rig but I'm still torn between the 720 $119.99, 620 propus $99.99 and 925 deneb $140.99 my grand total with the 720 is $627.55 with SH. So I can still be within my limit with the 925 but is it worth the $20? Should i just dump both of them and go with propus and buy a better VC? I want to mildly overclock my cpu but I'm a total noob that is why I was leaning towards the 720 because of unlocked multiplier. I already have Antec 300 illusion case and a 23" ASUS LCD. Some choices were and are difficult; that does not include the power supply yet as I have yet to choose one, probably an Earthwatts 430W or something of the sort considering the low power consumption. Any changes that would be beneficial financially without sacrificing quality?

I don't game, thus the low-end video card. I have dvd drives so they're not on the list.

Please review and tell me if there are incompatibility issues with anything here. My knowledge level is low and I appreciate your help.

My only other concern is for audio. I have a nice surround Boston Acoustics speaker/sub setup on my computer now, which has an old Soundblaster Audigy audio card. Can I use this with my speakers in my new build? Do I need it? Do I need a new card? Forgive my ignorance.

So the case design im hoping will ilimante that problem. I just need to power everything, and make sure it stays cool. So is this good and will it all work? or do i need to rethink alot? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ive got school starting in the winter and have drafting classes.

Hi, Im new to the forums here, but I was going to build a new computer to game with next month during break from uni. So I put together a wishlist of what I want in it, and I was just wondering if perhaps someone could take a quick look over them and see if theres perhaps an incompatability or whatever that I may have missed.

I think the watts an everything should be good, I used the wattage calculator, but it didnth ave hte 5850 on there. I may have missed perhaps a voltage somewhere, or a pin.

I made a post in the Motherboard forum that I would like to refer folks to when they are thinking about the P35 board vs the 680i board. People can still buy the 680i board if they don't want to SLI there is nothing wrong with that its a still a very good performance chipset as this test shows. Granted there may be other tests out there that may sway the other way but then again these tests were done with a very plain jane system and no overclocking and used a very low resolution for the real world test. So I take this test a little bit more then I would a test with super highend components.
