Yup, your right. I thought they had both 512 and 1gb versions and I was looking at listings that showed 512mb but I failed to see the x 2 part.

No mean to bust your bubble, but the 3870x2s are all 1GB memory. Each GPU (2 of them) have dedicated 512MB GDDR3 memory and 256-bit bus.

I think we could do with a little perspective on the HD 3870 X2 vs 8800 Ultra since they are comparable in capability, they are both available now from newegg, the HD 3870 X2 goes for $449.00 it comes with extras including software, the 8800 Ultra goes for (cheapest version) $629.99 it comes with the extras minus the software, if you priced out the PowerDVD 7, DVD Suite & 3D Mark 06 to buy seperately your looking at over $100, so the actual price difference between the cards in reality is $280.99 and the 8800 Ultra only beats the HD 3870 X2 in lower resolutions, and who plays in lower resolutions anymore, I mean really, so it doesn't take a math genius to figure out that $280.99 dollars goes a long way towards something else! Just my take on the current "VID CARD WAR"

Note: Forgot to mention that the HD 3870 X2 seems to do video and dvd better than the 8800 Ultra of course that has been a given for awhile now!

Dell (and most small-time dealers) will keep a SKU (item code) active as long as an item is still "in production".

This leads most cheap vendors to sell stuff that is not in stock but order-able.

Edit: Newegg doesn't do that, but on HOT items they will jack up the price as long as the item is in stock and people are willing to pay the premium to get the item.

When AMD acquired ATI in 2006, there was major speculation and criticism coming from all ends regarding their acquisition. This in turn inspired AMD to heavily pursue powerful graphics processing in lieu of this pessimism on so many fronts. I think AMD is smart; they I believe are putting a strong advancement to the graphics world, leaving out the CPU world for a small segment of time in order to increase their front on the Graphics end. Their CPUs are definitely not terrible; they just don't care as much about them at the time being as their graphics card division is greatly improving. I hope to see them improve their CPU selection but by developing their graphics division more, there is a method to their madness; with great video cards, it can be used in all platforms supporting it (Intel and AMD alike). Processors in general tend to not be quite as profitable for one good reason; gamers will pay the heft price for a graphics card, but for processors, there are plenty who will pay a lot, but there are also quite a few not interested plus the competition is hotter. Nvidia and ATI obviously the two largest graphics card makers know their market is very capable and willing to spend a lot of money on their components; just look at gaming in general, everything in the gaming world is fairly pricey (games ~$60/each + video cards ~$400 + headphones/etc...).

Anyways, I may have digressed or what not, but I don't feel well and need to get off the computer; so take my comments like a grain of salt.

Wow, Microcenter is really starting to come threw with some prices. Their Intel Core 2's and now new ATI video cards are cheaper then The Egg.

the only bad thing is i bought the 3870 a while ago..so no return on that one

however my gt has extended return warranty so im thinking that is it worth it to return the gt add money to the money i get back and buy the x2, or should i just keep the gt and get another 3870...

i paid 236 for my gt... and i just realized that i will be paying tax because the store is in my state...they did also have the 3870 for 191...now all that is left is the 199 model...

From early reviews the HD3870 X2 does outperform the HD3870 CF mode, so the value is there.
