I can't wait until last quarter of this year and Q1 2008 because of new CPUs and video cards that are being released. We'll have to hold off on our assumptions of Phenom desktop parts until we have accurate information on performance, but I'm hoping for the best. Barcelona is meant for energy efficiency which is probably why they are not the benchmark kings people expected. Performance per watt they are better than Xeons, but they don't have the blazing speed of the new Chipzilla Clovertown/Kentsfield CPUs.

The very latest news I have found relating to Phenom isn't from the inquirer but is from another source that often makes errors - Fudzilla.

Hard launch on mid November

Our sources have confirmed that AMD plans to unveil the first Phenom FX80 in late October time. The shipping version will likely be the same revision as the currently shipping K10 Opterons and some other sources claims that this part will work at 2.2 to 2.4GHz at launch.

The samples should be ready by late October but the hard launch should take the place in the middle of November.

I doesn't look that AMD will go faster than 2.5GHz this year but we've been surprised before.

Again, the source has made quite a few inaccurate claims in the past. I just wanted to keep hope alive for the Phenoms

I'm almost sure he means they won't be out in the market place until Q1 2008. Cool down and have some lemonade.

Last I checked, the date was for first quarter of 2008. Im going by what I read a few months ago.

If it is due out in October, please link me to something that is not The Inquirer. I have a hart time believing them.

Um, Phenom is due out in October, hence the one month after Barcelona, dude, its kinda ruins all your credibility when you don't have your facts straight.

I understand the large font is irritating. Take it easy. Try to imagine my situation. I woke up around 7AM this morning and started reading about the Barcelona release. At the time of my reply I had probably read about 100 articles. I then see the same article I posted which states the Barcelona was released today, and the person linking to the article says "I think it is due out later this month" ...

It's OK now though, I took a chill pill, sorry for the large font, and my cholestorol is down! jk

I am currently disappointed but still optimistic about Barcelona - I haven't seen them run through the gamut ***yet***- I am really looking more at the Phenom's specifically the Agena's though.

That's true as well from the historical perspective. Can't have it both ways. So I guess the K8 was their swan song, then... this makes me even sadder :I I've been a real fan of Big Green, too...

Well pricing always helps consumers to purchase but if you look at how CPU prices have really dropped there's not near as much margin on CPUs as there was. And AMD really needs a killer CPU that they could hold the profit margin up to make some money. They held great margins with the K8 as you had to pay an arm and a leg for the new CPUs when they came out. That is what they really needed this time around to bring in some Capital as they have leveraged about all they can.

That kinda makes me sad to hear, now that I'm starting to confirm it everywhere...

But as far as the non-hardc0re userbase is concerned, can these CPU's be made to compete better with Intel CPU's in the marketplace with aggressive pricing and better cooling solutions added? As I recall the Athlons and Athlon XP's killed the Pentium D/Pentium 4 inthe marketplace, and they were all clocked slower than the comprable Intel solution. Though this was also because they performed almost as well real-world and were priced so much more aggressively... would that work again?

There has been enough test results to clearly see that the chip isn't what its been hyped to be. When AMD runs about the same performance MHz for MHz with Intel then there is a problem as AMD will not scale as well. Having to run the chip at 1.5V to hit 2.5GHz is bad news for a second revision. Hopefully with some revisions they can get to 3GHz but it may be awhile or never look how long it took for a K8 to hit 3GHz. But AMD had to bring something to the market and quick in the financial shape their in. Things are not really looking too green for green fans.
