Perhaps the X4 945.

Gigabyte says it will support this CPU with a bios upgrade but are giving the following note about it:

If you install AMD AM2+ CPU on AM2 motherbord, the
system bus speed will downgrade from HT3.0(5200MHz) to HT1.0(2000 MT/s)

I used to put my system in standby with my 8600GTS, but when I installed my MSI GTS 250, it would leave half the PC running, so I switched to hibernate. Recently, I unplugged my rig and cleaned it out, went to plug it back in, no more standby/hibernate!!! I had been messing around with overclocking, but was having stability issues between the CPU & GPU so I set it all back to stock. And right around that time was when I couldn't standby/hibernate anymore. Does anyone have this board who could tell me the right settings to get it to standby/hibernate???

Motherboard questions

On my Asus Maximus III mother board there are two JMicron SATA connections for use if you want to create RAID hardware. If I don't want to use RAID can I use these for additional hard drives for normal use? There are also 2 Jmicron SATA connectors labled ODD1 and ODD2. It does not say what they are for. Are they for something special or can they be used for any optical drive?

Also, is it best to hook your case fans to the motherboard instead of directly to the power supply. Besides the cpu fan connection there are several other fan connections one being called PWR fan. What fan would that be, couldn't mean power supply fan would it, that is in the power supply. The conncection labled PWR is right by the top chassi fan which is the only one that the fan cable will reach to so I would like to use it for that. The other fan connections are labled CHA fan which I assume is chassi fan and OPT fan, I don't know what that is, there is just a note that says to connect a chassis fan to the OPT 1 / 2 / 3 for better thermal control, so I suppose the motherboard controls the fans speed.

What memory

I have an Asus MaximussIII Formula mother board with an Intel i5-750 processor. All of the Corsair memory that newegg matches up with the i5 cpu uses 1.65 volts. Intel says that the i5 cpu max should be no more than 1.6v, they wondered why they matched it to the cpu, they said they should be matching it with the motherboard. I purchased corsairs CMD4GX3M2A1600C8 which newegg recommends with the i5 cpu. In one review one person says that it didn't work very good because it uses 1.65 volts. Asus Maximuss III Formula list of qualified memory for corsair have no numbers that match up with any of the corsair memory that newegg has listed. I'm pulling my hair out trying to find which corsair memory I can use.
Tried to find solutions in forum listing my many problems to get mobo/cpu/graphics/monitor, etc., up and ruinning, No luck. I have continually had the following problems and certainly would appreciate any and all HELP!!!!

My new build- Cpu-Amd Phen.II x 4 955 Denab: Graphics Card- Asus EAH 4980; Mem- Corsair Dominator 4Gb; HD- WD WD750 sata; Monitor- Samsung 2343BLVY(? anyway- 23" LCD); OS- Windows 7 Ultimate; DVD Samsung sata burner: LG CD/DVD burner; OCZ 700 watt PSU.

Finally got Mobo to accept the above items, except the Samsung sata DVD burner and bought an LG IDE. Installed Windows 7. Troubles began when I rebooted after installing Windows; BIOS would not let me go into Windows. Wanted me to insert startup CD into the CD/DVD burner and start up Windows. I can reboot at this point (without the CD) from there and go into windows. but I'm sure I shouldn't have to go this route.

2nd problem- In Windows 7 run the Windows mangement system rating tool and got a 1.0 for the Graphics and another 1.0 for the 3 D. Tried installing the Asus CD and system refused to reboot. Restored to the previous BIOS setting and this is where I am with the new build at this point.

1st, I would like to get the system to accept the Samsung sata DVD burner ( was an OEM - no drivers). Called Samsung on the Burner and they emailed me a driver with instructions. Haven't tried yet since LG works fine. 2nd I would like to get the Graphics card running properly so that I can eventually see some "outstanding" graphics. 3rd, I cannot get the monitor anywhere near the resolution promised in the shipped literature, or from my conversations with Samsung Tech. By the way, all except the LG burner/OS were bought from NewEgg recently and most were recommeded by this forum.

Think that most of my problems are driver related. Called around locally for some help with my problems, but no one in my area could/wants to offer any help or tackle my problems.

Have not yet bought DSL service for my new build (plan to after my problems are solved), and cannot access my dialup account either. Apparently my legacy modem doesn't work with this version of Windows either. Very, very frustrating.

Any and all help with my problems would be greatly appreciated.

My question about motherboards is as follows. First of all, do motherboards come with chipsets on newegg? Also, if they don't how do I know if a chipset will be compatible with the motherboard. Also, how do i now if a processor is compatible with the mother board and the chipsets, and how i now if each of the 3 pieces of hardware are compatible with the other two. Basically, i would just like an explanation of the hole motherboard/cpu/chipset setup. To be frank, i have no idea what a chipset does.

EMachine D2346 hdd lite on steady

My dad gave me this computer so I do not know why the hard drive lite stays on at boot.

He never had a surge protector plugged into it.

Just plugged into the wall.

Will not boot to bios or no beeps heard.

All fans are spinning up including the case fan & CPU fan

The power button is a steady green

Speakers are plugged into I/O port

It has no VGA output. (In power save mode.)

PSU spins up ok.

Keyboard lites (all three) come on & then go out

Hard drive spins up & quiet.

Things I tried when troublshooting issue.

Replaced PSU

Tried a differant hard drive

Removed Ram one at a time

Reset cmos by removing the batt for one hour

Can't find the cmos & password jumpers cause their not labled on the board.

Looking for a site that has the pics of the board so I can find the jumpers & such.

Unplugged all devices except one stick of ram (tried both individually)

I'm wondering if it might be in standby mode (Sleep mode) but do not know how to get it out of standby mode.

Moved the mouse & pressed keys on keyboard

Could it possibly be a fried mobo?

Removed the mobo last night & really looked it over carefully & found no problems.

I did see when removing the AMD Athlon XP 2300 CPU that it looked as though there might have been some small burn marks on it.

The marks came right off with solution & reapplied the CPU & HS.

Fired it up & same ol' thing.

Going to find a used or refurbished CPU & see what happens.

Thinking of getting a 2400 instead of a 2300 AMD Athlon XP CPU.

No bad capacitors bulging or leaking as I can see.

No burn't smells

Motherboard looks good

Very little dust inside except some on the HS grids

Thinking not using a surge protector might have fried the mobo or something inside.

Motherboard specs:Socket A 462 AMD Athlon 2300+ motherboard part #:7061-020 S/N:K0505046612

512 memory modules 2- per slot, XP Home

Maxtor 40 GB 5300 rpm hdd.

I tried another hdd but no help.

Parts for this machine are not as hard to find as for my HP Pavilion that's down as well with a bad mobo.

These two machines have the identical same problems.

I have a post here about the HP machine also.

The system won't power up, but I've had the power supply tested and it's good. I've connected the hard disks to another box, and I was able to get critical data moved off. I called HP and they told me "Sure! We'll help fix your 'out-of-warranty' box! Pay us $250 to send it back and we'll diagnose the problem for you. Repairs will cost extra..." That didn't sound like such a good use of my money, so, I've taken the machine out of service for the time being.

That was my old game box. today I had to ship my new game box back to HP because it had a CPU/Memory problem (My confidence in HP's product is waning fast). So now I want to put the old machine back in service, but I need to find a cheap replacement motherboard. I hear that HP has some proprietary mounting points, so I can't just drop any old motherboard in. The system is a "Compaq Presario Media Center SR1830NX Desktop PC" And the motherboard specifications can be found at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00496280&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=1843675&lang=en.

Since HP won't sell me a replacement motherboard (Back to the 'ship it to us!') I wanted to get a replacement. I contacted the support staff at NewEgg.com, and they suggested you folks as the "experts" who could recommend a replacement unit. any takers?

and ATI video cards? I'm just curious because I'm looking into buying an ATI 4890 card. The motherboard has the PCI Express x16 slot the card
requires, I was just curious if since the chipset is made by nVidia if
there would be any incompatibilities with the ATI card.
Need advice picking out a motherboard...Please...

I just installed my new video card and tried to install two

up breaking a slot and only have one working slot now. I just got Win7 and could use faster RAM and

if that helps. (I would need the CPU to

My price range is anywhere from $80 to $150 depending on
quality and such. I would really like something
that is reliable and upgradable should the need arise. I think that with my new video card, I can
have a decent gaming machine that will last for years and years. ::knocks on wood::

I have an HP computer with a M2N78-LA mobo, for complete specs look up a6702f Hp Pavilion. My issue is the processor just doesn't seem to be cutting it and I felt i would give it an upgrade both Graphics and Processor. I went the Radeon 5770 and the AMD Phenom II x4 955BE, my question is this:

Will this processor work on this mobo, I got off the phone with HP they say no because it couldn't deal with the heat. I am not one to trust HP because of past issues and it really wasn't the answer I wanted to hear because I already bought it :(. Currently on it's way to my door and I started wondering if it would fit. Now the processer says it works with both AM2+ and AM3 and the M2N78-LA can handle AM2+ so i thought nothing of it until I started wondering if the bios would need an update. Do you guys foresee any issues with this processor in this mobo?

I have also ordered a new PSU as well to handle the power difference. Thinking that maybe that module wasn't seated properly before, I then reinstalled all the RAM, but ever since running the tests and switching things around, both the BIOS and Windows can see all 8GB but only mark two of the modules (4GB) as "usable." I've switched out the modules, reseated them, put them in a different order, still no more than 4GB usable. Two of the RAM slots are essentially disabled, yet there is no option in the BIOS to turn them back on again. I have tried different memory voltages, different speed settings, nothing.

On a side note, I've been having tons of problems with the BIOS versions for this board. Some of the later versions, which supposedly fix memory compatibility issues, actually prevent Windows from booting. Even with the default BIOS settings (no fancy features turned on), I get an "Error loading operating system" message. I have to roll back to a previous BIOS version to even get back into Windows.

I dug around a bit online for answers to the memory problem. The only thing I that might explain the problem is that I am using 1600MHz RAM, when Intel's specs are limited to 1333 for this platform. One manual for a different P55 motherboard said that if you using faster RAM than 1333, only two of the four slots will be usable. This was found on an ASUS P55 board memory compatibility list: "Due to Intel spec definition, X.M.P. DIMMs and DDR3-1600 are supported for one DIMM per channel only." The problem with this theory is that my RAM problems were occurring regardless of my speed settings. From the very start, the board set my 1600MHz RAM at 1333, and I never changed it because it didn't seem important. So if I set my faster RAM to 1333, shouldn't this solve the problem? Or is there something I'm missing here?

I know this is a lot to read, but there is a lot to consider here. I have about a week to figure out what to return to Newegg. Do I return just my RAM and hope that it is the cause of all my problems? Do I return the motherboard because of its strange behavior so far? Or do I return both? Your advice would be much appreciated.

Please read before posting

* Maintain all general forum rules
