Weird Problem with Mouse & Keyboard Freezing

Some background:

Laptop: Dell Latitude D410

OS: XP Pro

Mouse & Keyboard: Generic Dell USB Wired

Display: 32" Vizio [Laptop stays closed]

Drivers: All up to date, and reinstalled twice.

Problem:

I wanted to use this laptop as a cheap media player for my bedroom TV. It is streaming video from a home server; for this purpose is seems to work fine.

However, whenever I turn the TV off, leaving the laptop on [could be for 1 second, could be for a few hours, doesn't matter] both the mouse and keyboard freeze on the screen.

If I lift up the lid of the laptop, the laptop's keyboard and mouse work just fine, but the external mouse and keyboard still do not.

Please let me know if anyone can give me some help with this.

Change the graphics card on a laptop?

Does anyone know where I can find (purchase) a standalone mobile graphics card, preferably a Nvidia 250m?

I believe I am able to change it on my MSI laptop...but I can't find any place to actually buy a mobile gpu.

I don't like the newer high-resolution glossy screens.

Looking at these HP dv6 machines. They come both Turion M520 or Intell T6600. For ~$750, seem to be a good price for a machine that has the features I need (num keypad, screen size, dedicated graphic card, HDMI port,expresscard. Mostly for home use, but some video rendering, light gaming. This is for the wife mostly but I do most everything on my desktop, but nice to also travel a bit.

I bought a replacement harddrive for my Compac Pressario laptop from newegg - installed it - (the exact same brand and model no. as the old one)

but cannot start it. The Bios is there, but nothing else. It cannot read the system recovery disk . What is missing ?

I'm 80 years old and way behind the Computer Savy People and wold like to have some advice! I will hold no one responsible for any suggestions.

#1 My desktop Computer with XP Pro software has a failing HDrive ( very Noisy) and With my eyesight getting worse (macular degeneration) I want to replace my desktop with a laptopo so as to be able to get closer to the screen.

#2 I.ve always missed the Specials on the Lenovo g550 for $399 and the have one similar HP (upgrade??) for $449 with rebate

I'm only familar with XP Pro and not sure about different software

I like to do a lot of web searching and Emails and am looking at the HPG61 -32ous CPU AMD Athion II M300 (2.0GHZ) ??????

Need help as I really like the IBM but would like advice or suggestions on a Laptop for myself.

I hope I haven't misused the forum and if so please delete and I will understand.

newegg has the Asus UL30A-X4, but it doesn't say if it has 32bit or 64bit windows 7. Does anyone know?

I asked Newegg, but their tech support completely sucked. their response was "the item listing doesn't say so we don't know". What kind of BS response is that? if the item listing said, I would not have needed to ask the question.

I'm looking for a small (no bigger than 13.3" screen) notebook (or netbook, if applicable) capable of running World of Warcraft at low/medium settings. The top contender right now is the HP Mini 311 (w/ NVIDIA Ion graphics), but I'd prefer a newer processor technology (such as a CULV, as opposed to the aging Atom 270). Mac or PC laptop for programming?

I'm a first year Computer Science and Engineering major and will be needing to program in various languages throughout the following years. I already have a great desktop setup at home: EVGA x58, i7-920, 3gb DDR3, gtx 260.

The point is that I need something mobile which I can use while on campus and will be powerful and versatile enough to write in various languages. So what kind of features should I be looking for in a laptop if it's primary usage will be programming?

And will a PC or MAC be best for handling these tasks? Please give me some insight on how one will be better than the other as opposed to being biased by saying that one is better that the other for no apparent reason. Thanks!

Want a Sub 600 Dollar Laptop

I'm looking for a laptop(or possibly a netbook) under 600, and am not really in the rush to buy one. The main purpose of this is to use for school and to be able to work in areas without a power outlet for at least a good amount of time. I personally already have a desktop computer that I play games on, so graphics is not that big of a deal (though if I could... it would be great)

But they're all slanted toward one side. The first one has great portability, hdmi port, and a good battery life... but cpu is a bit lacking, as with the gpu. The second seems ok as well, but battery life and gpu seem a bit weak... and the Third, the size and battery life... Anyone know of a better laptop to fit my needs?

Recommend a laptop

I am loking for a laptop and I am of course totally lost. I have seen a couple models that I like but none of them seem to have the combination I want. I am sort of leaning towards an ASUS because I used the P6T Deluxe V2 in my build and have the VK246H 24" monitor and I love both of them. The main things I am looking for are a good graphics card, a 260 would be ideal but I can compromise.

Screen size is not really critical but I would like a Blu-Ray player I can attach to my television with preferrably an HDMI. I would also like to have decent battery life and this is a sticking point with some good ASUS models. A couple I have been looking at have a portion of the features I am looking for but a 1.5 hour or less battery life and that sucks. Of course I would like a decent processor but to keep the cost down a core 2 duo is acceptable. Ram should of course be a minimum of 4G and I would ideally like Windows 7.

So can anyone point me to something that might fill my needs, the 2 main things for me are Blu-Ray and battery life but the decent video card is VERY CLOSE. OK lastly I would like to stay as close to a grand as possible, I know I can find all of this in some 2k+ Alienware or similar but I would like to stay below $1200

Some Laptop Upgrade Questions

I have an almost 2 year Dell XPS M1530 that I would like to upgrade. Currently it has 3gb Dell ram (PC2-800), and a 250gb HD with Vista 32-bit home. I'd like to upgrade the ram to two 2gb modules and replace the hard drive with a 500gb WD Scorpio Blue HD. I'd also like to upgrade to Win7after I upgrade those components. Would it be easier to just buy the full Win7 and go 64-bit and install it on the new drive or reinstall vista 32-bit and upgrade to Win7 32-bit? I mostly use this laptop when I deploy or in the case of my old Dell XPS desktop, as a temp desktop replacement. I mainly play MMo's and watch movies/listen to music on it. Thanks for any and all advice/help.

Looking at a laptop for the first time in 8 years

So the last laptop I bought was in 2001 and ended up not using it much. But now I'm starting to travel more and I don't like constantly having to rely on company laptops (read no game installation on long, boring trips). Because this will be primarily for travel, weight is a key requirement for me. But I also like big monitors, I cannot lie. The problem I've had when looking online is the weight is often not listed.

I've searched for good review sights but haven't found much that fits what I'm thinking of (and certainly nothing as straight forward as gpureview was when I was looking for GPUs for my desktop). Any nudges in the right direction would be appriciated.

In terms of specifics of what I'm looking for, it probably goes in this order:

Dedicated graphics card (WoW, this or Rome:Total War would be as intensive as personal use gets)
Lightweight
Large screen size (given #2)
Able to crunch Access databases (not huge ones, this would be as intensive as work use gets)
DVD clarity (for all those wonderful cross-country flights)

Any nudges, suggestions, or recommendations would be appriciated. All I really know at this point is an Alienware machine would be awesome, but is far more than I need, I would go Office-Space-gangsta-printer-beatdown on a netbook, and am feeling a little overwhelmed looking at all the space inbetween.

We just ordered this notebook and got it today. After spending considerable time downloading all the stuff we need, I decided to check the system specs so I could rattle them off to someone.

This thing says it only has 2GB of RAM! When the box and the product description CLEARLY state that it has 4GB.

What gives!?

Hi, so I've been looking to buy a netbook and the Asus eee 1005ha-vu1x-bk has caught my eye. Last night I was doing some final research before I make my final purchase and I saw that HP now has a mini using the nvidia ion, I would much rather go with asus then HP so I was wondering if there will be any new eee pcs coming out because I don't want to buy something now and a week later asus will release something new that's better then what I got. If something new is coming out, will I have to wait that long? I'm hoping to get something sooner then later, sooner as in within a month. Thanks!

oh and I will mostly be using it for notes in class, messengers, movies, music and maybe sometimes games. (I saw that the new hp mini can play cod4)

I bought this laptop 2 months ago and I thought I have a free upgrade from Lenovo. I called today Lenovo today and they told me because I got it from Newegg, I don't qualify for the free upgrade. Is this true? I read some reviews from newegg users that they upgraded to Windows 7. How did you guys do that? Through the free upgrade program from Lenovo?

Hi,

I had decided to give Asus a try, and after much research decided to order:

However, it is now a deactivated item! Arrgh. So I called NewEgg and they said to call ASUS. I just got off the phone with Asus and they said those laptops are still available, just not through NewEgg.

I told her the model number (N61Vg-X1) didn't even come up on the Asus website, so how could it still be available? She said the model number to search for is N61Vg, and that the "-X1" is just a NewEgg identifier. So.....

I googled N61Vg and came up with this at Amazon:
