Ok, this is What im looking to buy. I have 4GB of Memory. 500W PSU,. Would i be able to overclock this. Or atless unlock the cores?

Crashing under any overclocking - Stable otherwise

I have my PC running completely stock now. The moment I try to overclock it, even upping the bus speed 1MHz, it's suddenly unstable. My Core 2 Q6600 requires 1.325V, so I've watched the voltages and set the motherboard to give the CPU 1.38V at stock so that the readout is 1.325V in the BIOS and in the Asus Probe software. However, whether it's 1.325V effectively or if I set it to Auto and run 1.29V, the PC is completely stable at stock speeds. I run the OCZ DDR3 memory at 1066MHz with 7-7-7-23 latencies at 1.7V. It is supposed to be able to do the same latencies but at 1600MHz and 1.9V. I ran memtest86 for a couple days and found nothing wrong, but I haven't run the test much with the PC overclocked since it just crashes. I would like to start off blaming something, but it is confusing that the PC crashes with even a 1MHz overclock. I can't point a finger at any one thing with that info. What do you guys think?

core i7 920 oc question

i have oc'd my 920 when i run cpu-z it starts and 4ghz and X 20 multiplier but then it drops to about 3.6 ghz and a X 18 multiplier. when i use the asus ai suite included in the p6t drivers disc it says that my cpu is at 3.946 ghz with a X 20.0 multiplier. so what is the real speed of my processor ? plz help me !!!!

Thought I would share this info here.

I got a Biostar NF520-A2 SE mobo for a simple build and the board was like $50 or so. Many many people on some OC'ing forums all stated that this mobo is terrible at OC'ing and some could not get a change from default settings on the CPU. I managed to get mine running at 3.029MHZ on air. I have not tried beyond this and wondering if i should on air. I probably will try to 3.2GHZ. So my setting is just 233 x 13 on the booster section. Have not touched the CPU VID yet. Running an AMD Black Edition 5000+ 2.6GHZ.

Just thought that I should put it out that this board is cheap but can be OC'd pretty decent.

overclocking intel core 2 duo e6400 with stock hsf

Hi all,

I realized that overclocking my cpu in particular is common, but I haven't found a solid statement about how much I can push with the stock hsf...

I have seen vids of people pushing 2.13ghz to 2.8 or even 3.3.. So, is there a way for me to overclock my cpu right now, or do I have to buy a new hsf? Also, do I have to upgrade my ram to a better one? Thank you.

I have a pc with an intel motherboard, D945GTP, and a p4 3.0 GHz, 2 gig or kingston ddr2 800. using onboard video. Running stable. I wanted to overclock. and did. got it to 3.4 and was using memtest to stress it. it was giving me no errors. but I can see the preformance is off. pages load slower and there is some jerky something going on when I try to move things fast to check for just that.I did notice that it was kind of hot.this is at around 45c at idle and gets up to 55c on memtest. this is the fan that came with the processor. I cleaned and reapplied artic 5 paste, not to much. I guess I also wonder how hot is too hot ?

Where to begin with overclocking an i5?

I desire to overclock my i5 after I'm able to obtain an aftermarket heatsink. Hopefully 3.6GHz isn't too much to ask for overclocking on air, though I hear reports of better.

Anyways, would anyone happen to know of a good heatsink for a budget build? I looked around on Newegg, obviously, and saw this. I believe it works with my socket type and it should fit in the Antec Sonata III case. Is there a better option in a similar price range, or should I stick with that?

Also, I've never overclocked anything. As far as I know, it is simply a matter of changing BIOS settings, testing to see if it boots up, and then running a stress test to make sure the processor is stable? If anyone could enlighten me--tips, a guide, or anything--I would appreciate it.

p55 overclocking woes (from anand)

I found an article over at Anand where they wrote about issues with extreme overclocking on their p55 motherboards. They found that consistently, processors did not have sufficient pin to pad contact, and as a result were damaging both the CPU and motherboards they were used in under extreme OC conditions. They mentioned that it only seems to occur in Foxconn manufactured boards and with extreme OC conditions, so I have a few questions on the topic

1. Anand say that we should be fine with mild oc // stock, but would it be possible to experience the same type of damage simply from pro-longed day to day use (such as F@H for example)

2. The issue of pin-to-pad contact. From what I understand, insufficient contact affects the power draw, are there any other consequences arising from this? How would you typically test for this anyway? Would you just clamp down the cpu and let it sit for a while then revisit and see if there are proper markings?

3. Has anyone experienced similar issues with their LGA-1156 setups? OC or stock?

let me start off by saying that this is an issue brought on Right after i messed with overclocking settings in my bios..

1. i set my HT multiplier from auto to 5x, it ran at 1200 which i noticed is below the usual specs
2. i set my HT multiplier from 5x to 8x, this made it run at default specs, 1800
3. i made a foolish leap and changed it to 13x, i had no real understanding of what i was doing, just trying to maximize. THIS IS WHERE PROBLEMS HAPPEND

the computer rebooted after the last saved settings, but there was no boot screen, everything stayed black for several minutes, no keyboard lights would come on if pressed.

here are the main specs
motherboard: MSI K9A2 CF-F V2
processor: AMD Phenom 9600 Agena 2.3GHz
ram: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2
power supply: 500w

ive done alot of trouble shooting so far, so before you think of any ideas let me tell you exactly what ive tried:

-left the battery out and the jumper posts on CLEAR overnight with power cables unplugged
-done the same process and powered the computer on for a few minutes
-pulled ram out and powered on (there were no beeps, nothing changed)
-pulled processor out and powered on (no beeds, nothing changed)
-tried putting my brothers AM2+ dual core into my motherboard, nothing changed
-tried putting my quad AM2+ quad core into his motherboard, didnt boot (no beeps)
-ran my powersupply in different machines (everything worked fine)

-assembled my motherboard, cpu, powersupply, and graphics card out of its case and started it up using the power connector pins. nothing changed. same things happend as they did in the case; monitor doesnt pick up anything, keyboard doesnt respond to capslock/numslock.

as a conclusion. when i run my computer like i usually would, my monitors dont pick up any signal. immediately after i press the power button. all my keyboard lights flash once (and never come on again). all fans run. all hard drives power on. my dvdr+ burner drive runs, lights on the PC come on.

did my processor destroy my motherboard? and in the process kill itself?

it seems pretty blunt to me, but im just checking to see if there is something i may not know, or have overlooked

hey everyone im new to this part of newegg lol but i am having trouble overclocking my RAM
i use DDR3 1333mhz CORSAIR RAM and its only set to 1066mhz i cant over clock the ram it self cause if i do the computer will freeze up and not boot up untill i reset the BIOS but..if i overclock the CPU it will also over clock the RAM too...i can only overclock the CPU at 3.51ghz
its a intel duo core 2 3.0ghz cpu and wont OC any higher then that =\ does anyone know why it does this? or what i can do to get the RAM at its normal speed?

So basically I have been dabbling in OC'ing and I have gotten some good progress. I have my Intel Core i5 @ 3.2ghz Stable (ran prime 95 for a few hours). The only problem is that when I reboot, it basically resets my settings back to stock. I am on a Gigabyte P55 UD3R. Anyone know why this is happening? Google didn't seem to have any answers.

Need help with a Compaq Evo D51s

Try not to laugh but my mother won this thing from her work. Its a Compaq Evo D51s running XP. It has a CD-ROM drive but no CR-RW or DVD Drive, 512 MB of RAM and a Pentium 4 1.99Ghz processor. Right now it is running ok but I want to upgrade it a little bit for my mother. Believe it or not she actually uses her current laptop quite a bit for music and movies and what not. So I want to upgrade this thing for her so that it will work real nice. I want to replace the CD drive with a CDRW/DVDRW drive, upgrade the RAM on this bad boy and maybe even put a bigger hard drive into it. Problem is that I have no clue what to purchase. I have a pretty good idea on the RAM since it is 184 pin but anything you guys could input would be appreciated.

I'm thinking of trying to moderately overclock my new PC. I've read several guides and have a question about temperatures. All the guides say to monitor the CPU temperature. But noplace have I seen what I should monitor it for? What is the limit I shouldn't exceed?

Processor: i7 920, no overclocking
Heatsink: Intel stock cooler (currently)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
Case: Cooler Master HAF 932

With this setup (with the Intel stock cooler) in a room ambient of about 27C, I get an idle CPU temperature of about 30C. At 100% CPU usage, the Gigabyte EasyTune utility shows 49C. RealTemp and CoreTemp show about 60C-62C. From reading, I understand that RealTemp and CoreTemp read sensors actually in the CPU chip. What is the EasyTune utility reading? It's consistently reading 10C-15C lower.

I know I need to replace the Intel stock cooler if I want to overclock very much. But do I have any headroom (temperature-wise) to overclock moderately with this cooler?

What does the 2000+ mean? Is that the fastest you can run the memory at when its overclocked??

Using AMD Utility, OC Tuner, Vista’s Experience Index, and ASRock BIOS overclocking features OC'ing was a breeze for the most part. I was able to OC at 3.7GHz before hitting the wall with a standard fan, AMD Phenom II X4 740 Black CPU, and 4GB OCZ Platinum memory. Using Windows Experience Index check worked the best to see if the system would crash at a given setting and the AMD Utility worked nice for low end OC’ing and a quick bench mark test. The best OC’ing for power consumption is 3.4GHz as the CPU voltage was the only parameter to be tweaked everything else could run auto/normal voltages. For gaming you might run at 3.4GHZ with the onboard GPU at 720 or 740MHz if you don’t have a 16x PCIE addon card. Unfortunately this MB didn't allow me the settings to OC my OCZ Platinum memory which could have gained me performance, 5-5-5-15 for the 4GB pack was all she would give me which is my stock memory setting, too bad. One nice thing about this board is that I can save 3 different MB setups which is pretty slick for OC'ing and they have a OC setting to help stability called CPU/PCIE Async making overclocking more stable. I have a 2003 spread sheet which you can see what I did to achieve the levels of OC'ing I did and is something that might help you with AMD OC'ing. It is sheet protected with no password so that you can change only the variables that need to be changed. If you wish to modify it further you can unprotect it easily since there is no password. One nice thing about the spread is you can see the voltage adjustment curve as you hit the OC'ing wall and when you need to make little changes for stability it is easier to determine which ones to adjust.

Once I got to what seemed to be stable I would try to tweak some of the voltages down as low as I could before I lost that stability this worked very good and kept me from getting to far out of bounds with any of my voltage tweaks.

My basic procedure was to first just try overclocking with the CPU multiplier until voltage needed to be tweaked for stability. System boots into Vista and wouldn't crash on bootup then I run the Windows Experience Test for a quick stability check. I tried the AMD Utility Stability test but it wasn't as successful at crashing a non-stable system MS's was better.

After hitting that point I used AMD Utility setting target speeds & voltages and recording the working numbers in my spreadsheet. When I got up to 3.5GHz I needed to do this on my own since the AMD tool didn't like going above 1.45vCore.

Overclocking can void your warranty so the responsibility is yours if things go south and you damage something so be careful and don't try to get too crazy.
