eSata Case port to Sata MoBo?

eSata Case port to Sata MoBo?

Can eSata port be connected to a Sata (II or III) port?

My Rosewill Challenger U3 case has an eSata port on the front, which I would like to connect internally to my Asus P8Z68-V/Gen3 motherboard. The mobo is equipped with 1 eSata port on the back, but there are no apparent eSata headers on the board. The connector from the eSata port on the case looks like a regular sata connector, but I've tried connecting it to a Sata II and Sata III header on the board and it doesn't work.

Are eSata and Sata compatible, or is it likely the port on my case is broken?

For info, the external HDD I'm using has its own power so it likely doesn't need power from the port, yet when I plug in on the front it doesn't work. WHen I plug in on the back it works fine. Please share any helpful advise on best way to resolve this.

    Thanks.
