    My First Time

Hey everyone. I'm trying to build a computer for the first time and would like some input.

    Here's my list: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=18680425

This is built mainly for gaming, but I hope it can do all the other normal stuff too/

    My questions are...

    -Is everything here compatible?

-Do I need additional equipment like a fan?

-I noticed some parts won't be restocked for a while so can you recommend me some replacements?

Please let me know your opinions, answers, and additional comments. Thank you for your time.

    Re: My First Time

The CPU and the motherboard aren't compatible, and the only company that ships usable PSUs with cases is Antec.  Go read the buying guides on Anandtech and try again.

    Re: My First Time

Alright I've revised my list. Is there anything else wrong or do you guys have anymore recommendations?

    Re: My First Time

    Looks better.

As far as a top level critique, I would think about getting a Core i3-2120 i3-2105 in lieu of a slow CPU + video card and buy a real video card later.  Maybe even think about getting an HP, because there's not going to be much difference in terms of cost or quality.

That case takes full size ATX power supplies, so you could go with something cheaper like a Corsair 430CX.  The one you have now comes with an adapter bracket, so it would be fine too.

SSDs need to have like 15% free space to keep from burning out or running really slow.  30GB - 20GB for a Windows 7 install =  5.5GB for everything else.  OCZ garners a lot of venom from their customers too.  Read some of the reviews on that drive.  I would pay the outside $30 for a 64GB Crucial M4 at the very least or stay with regular 7200 RPM hard drives.

One thing with that case is it has fitment issues with full width microATX boards (like the one in your wishlist) and 3.5" hard drives when using 4 memory sticks.  I would think about a Fractal Core 1000 instead.

    Re: My First Time

I've adjusted to most of your suggestions. Thank you for your help.

There is one thing that I'm worried about. I would like to somehow keep this under $500 while still keeping it a strong gaming machine. Should I switch out the motherboard in light of something cheaper that only holds 2x240? Thanks.

i gotta agree wit TheSlakey on u maybe looking into an HP/Dell,, u don't have any HDD yet or a copy of Windozzzzz,,, ur SSD ain't gonna hold wat u need, u will need a 7200rpm HDD to go along with it, or ditch the SSD, u can always add one later,,, JMHO

    good luck with ur build

I can get Windows 7 for ~$10 at my uni because I'm in the school of business. What HDD do you recommend or what to replace the SSD with?

    Re: My First Time

Ehhh, if you're super strapped for cash I guess 2x240 would work.  Not like any of this stuff is made to last forever anyway.  Intel actually has a OK looking H61 board for $70.

You could go back to the Rosewill case with that and save another $15 too.

If you're keeping the video card, you can change the CPU to the i3-2100 and save another $10.  It's the same chip, but with slower integrated video, which isn't getting used anyway.

I'd probably grab a Spinpoint F3 for the hard drive.  Really good performance as such things go, and reasonably reliable.

    Re: My First Time

get the WD caviar blue 500gb 7200 rp, should run you about $89.99, instead of buying a ssd, invest that money into a better graphics card because your going to need a better one if your gonna play bf3, skyrim, etc

    Re: My First Time

So if I do purchase a 7200 rpm HDD, I wouldn't have to buy a SSD?

If I do that, could you guys recommend me some (more) HDD options and better graphics card options? Thanks.

    Re: My First Time

well with a hdd (which is very necessary in any p.c. build, it stores all the files including os) it's not gonna have the speed of a ssd, mainly I think a ssd is for putting your os on (faster boot times) and maybe some games that you want to run a little bit faster.  For a graphics card look into this card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500193 its a nvidia gtx 550ti, you can get any 550 ti you want as they will perform very well with the price

Can I run both a HDD and SSD, or do I have to choose one?

    Re: My First Time

you can run both at the same time just leave hdd unplugged to put os on then after that plug hdd in

If I do that does that mean the SSD will hold the OS? If so, what would the HDD be doing after I plug it in?

Will this make my computer stronger/faster by using both a HDD and SSD at the same time? Thanks again.

    Re: My First Time

Yes if you do that the ssd will hold the os the hdd will hold the rest of the information you want to hold i.e. programs word document etc..

Having the os on an ssd makes the computer boot faster or other programs you have on it like a game

    Re: My First Time

How would I separate those when saving documents?

Also, could you recommend me some good HDD and SSD combinations?

    Re: My First Time

when you go to save as it will show both the hdd and the ssd you would just select the hdd

you can use this hdd that TheSlakey recommended HDD

the ssd dpending on what you want to use it for just as a boot drive or if you want to put some games and stuff on it as well

there is this intel 80gb one SSD that could mainly hold the os and a couple games

or there is this intel 120gb SSD that can hold the os and a little bit more games

Would you recommend the 64GB SSD I currently have in my wishlist? I plan on having just a few games.

    Re: My First Time

depends on how much you are willing to spend if you are set on that ssd then get it or

for 15 more dollars you could get this samsung ssd which will give you faster write speed by about two times what the crucial does

    Re: My First Time

Okay this is my up-to-date list and will be what I work towards in the upcoming months.

    http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=23500287

Can anyone give me tips on how to find deals on these specific parts? Thank you.

P.S. As for the graphics card I currently have in my wishlist, I'll be using it until I can get some money to upgrade.

    Re: My First Time

Bumping this up. I added a HDD and I have a question about the tower and the PSU. I noticed that the PSU pumps air up. Would this not be compatible with the current Fractal Design Core tower I have selected? Would a PSU that blows outwards be better for the tower?

    Thanks for your help.

EDIT: Would these PSUs be better suited than the one I currently have selected?
