Re: Newegg Survey: Will Call
I voted for "I don’t care too much. Shipping is fast enough" Q&A What city and state do you live in?
New York (Manhattan), NY
What is your nearest major city? How far is that from you?
New York City / 0 miles
How far are you willing to drive to a Newegg Will Call Center? A. 0-5 miles B. 10-25 miles C. 25-50 miles D. 50+ miles
A. 0-5 miles in that most of us don't drive on a daily basis. We'd have to rent a car which is possible with Zip Car and stuff but then it might become cheaper to buy from Best Buy. I'd only pick up stuff at a call center inside Manhattan then that'd be within 5 miles, but not in the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn or Staten Island.
Where would you feel comfortable picking up your package? A. Official Newegg only will call center B. Newegg will call center within a convenience store C. Newegg will call center within a mail/copy center D. Anywhere is ok
D. Anywhere, the distance matters the most. I don't feel like riding a cab to somewhere in Queens and paying 100 bucks for the round trip. Plus that could take like 2-3 hours too because of the traffic.
I voted for I don't care that much just because I thought you were talking about making Will Call available at their warehouse in Edison, NJ which is too far.
But if I could walk 5 blocks to a UPS drop off location and pick up my Egg orders, then that'd be awesome especially for small stuff. large orders, I prefer regular shipping so that I don't need to carry large boxes in and out of a cab. I think we are in general used to having stuff delivered home, whether it's laundry clothes, groceries, or dinner. But having the option to walk in and up is of course very nice at least for small items. There are 8 million people here, I'm sure many would use that service. Whether the profit pays for the real estate, I have no idea.

What city and state do you live in? Central New York What is your nearest major city? How far is that from you? Syracuse, 60+ miles
How far are you willing to drive to a Newegg Will Call Center? C
Where would you feel comfortable picking up your package? A
Edit: BTW, I think a Will Call center in New York City or any place that has a subway or other nice mass transit is probably a good idea... Out in the boonies where I live, it just doesn't make any sense though.. UPS to the doorstep is great, and our packages arrive in good condition and never get stolen.

Re: Newegg Survey: Will Call
What would be even cooler than a "Will call" center is an RMA center where you could just take stuff to without having to package it up in a box... That's one of the things that people still like Best Buy for.... it's much less hassle to return something..

True. but it would have to be small. Best Buy etc isn't making money because the real estate is too expensive. Also, this is unrelated, but I think Egg could do some businesses with IT people hired by businesses here in NYC. STAPLES for instance, has special contract with my employer and we get a discount on things we order with our business accounts, what we get from them may not be necessarily cheaper than the same stuff we get from drug stores (like pens you know?) but because of the contract, our purchasing system is set up in such a way that STAPLES products preferentially show up when we order office supplies. I was thinking Egg could do the same with IT / computer items. they'd mostly use mailing services but if something's needed NOW we pay for a messenger service (that means guys on "bikes" competing against cars and tracks on the streets) to have it picked up and delivered in a few hours, so, then the call center you are talking about could be used if they have a few basic items stored there.

True especially in suburban areas. they return and get the return credit right there. Not necessarily around here though because the UPS drop off location is everywhere, and especially with a large computer case or something, we'd need to use a cab, so the distance matters the most for returns. If Egg could create more locations than UPS can create drop off locations, then that would be another story. Or door men deal with UPS delivery people when UPS comes to drop off stuff the next time. So not much effort.

PERFECT! So you tell everybody that you are going to pick up your Egg order and then read the dirty magazines.
You know what? Maybe Egg shouldn't do this until the National Sales Tax stuff goes through at least in states where people aren't paying taxes right now?
If people knew this means they'd start paying sales taxes then they might have different opinions about it.

Re: Newegg Survey: Will Call
Although it would be nice to pick things up locally (especially cases) I am one that does not want to cough up the tax just yet. Maybe if they start taxing internet purchases then it wouldn't matter

Re: Newegg Survey: Will Call
Q&AWhat city and state do you live in? Julian, NC
What is your nearest major city? How far is that from you? Greensboro, NC How far are you willing to drive to a Newegg Will Call Center? C. 25-50 miles
Where would you feel comfortable picking up your package? A. Official Newegg only will call center C. Newegg will call center within a mail/copy center
However........................ would they not still have to ship it to the will-call center? Not seeing any speed improvements. Also, in Many states a will call center will force the egg to charge sales tax on items purchased in those states, A big downside as it can cause a large decrease in buisness.

Re: Newegg Survey: Will Call
I would assume this isn't going to technically be owned by Newegg. I would think they'll establish a contact and advance pay a "start up company" for future services, to cover the cost of setup. Then by complete coincidence, be their only early source of contracts IF the idea here is to establish some sort of an online mailing depot with the aims of expanding it beyond Newegg, it could make sense. If it's early run is successful, perhaps branch it off into franchiship?
It could be especially handy for large orders, because I know having my $1,500 computer sitting on my front porch all day while I'm at work, would certainly make me a bit nervous xD And I've never even seen an option to just not deliver it to your house, but send it to a local UPS Store instead(with an added fee). The only way to do it, is to call them on the phone and request it, and it's a big mess getting it to work(in my experience)
If the idea is seriously just to setup Newegg huts in the mall, this is a terrible idea and hopefully won't get off the ground. Adding %7 to bills for a service a small minority of your customers will use, to make deliveries one day faster(at best) just doesn't have legs IMHO.

Re: Newegg Survey: Will Call
^^^^^^^^^ i agree wholeheartedly,,, i think we should leave things the way they are, i for one don't want anything that could possibly have the potential to raise prices,, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, and like gms stated, it will still have to be shipped to the pickup center, not giving us faster shipping, i luvz 3 days from Cali to NC
good luck with ur build

Re: Newegg Survey: Will Call
I don't mind it, I live about thirty minutes from Newegg. What I don't get is that the tax difference between will call and shipping, it's not much but tax wise it is cheeper to ship then will call. And don't give me that about handling. But I always liked picking my items up.

Re: Newegg Survey: Will Call
When you buy something at a store, you are paying both the state and city taxes. So, when you get it shipped and receive it in another city, the chances are you are not paying the city tax though you still have to pay the state portion of the tax with you being in Cali.

Yes I know that but in the City of Industry which is in L.A. County where Newegg is I think thier sales taxes are close to 10% But I also think that includes the state sales tax, Now if I buy in Orange County I only pay 8.75%. But what I was talking about is only less then a buck so I don't think it's a taxe thing, but I don't really care it is not that much. But if I buy a car in L.A. County I only pay the taxes for Orange County.

Excellent point products. This would give NewEgg a "physical presence" in your state and likely make it so that NewEgg would have to start collecting sales tax. Things already ship in a timely manner. I'm okay with how it's done now, I'll pass. I would actually be quite annoyed if NewEgg put a center in my state for will call and then I had to start paying sales tax at the time of order.

Re: Newegg Survey: Will Call
wyldstallyn: Q&A
What city and state do you live in? Just outside Baltimore, MD
What is your nearest major city? How far is that from you? Baltimore: about 10 miles, depending on where you go. If that's not major enough, DC is about 50 miles and 7 hours
How far are you willing to drive to a Newegg Will Call Center?
B. 10-25 miles
Where would you feel comfortable picking up your package? A. Official Newegg only will call center For B, you said "convenience store," but if you meant a convenient store (as in convenient location) like a Best Buy or Staples or even a mall, that would be fine, but it would still have to be officially NE
On a side note, please don't put one in DC. No one will go to it. DC is like the most inconvenient city to go to anymore Edit: I read some posts after posting and noticed all the sales tax talk. I prefer waiting for my stuff to not have sales tax. That is, of course, unless I desperately need something. Too bad there couldn't be NE retail stores, but without sales tax. Maybe put one in Delaware?

Re: Newegg Survey: Will Call
That's right! Delaware doesnt hcarge taxes.
You know what?
Egg's NYC Call Center could be in Hoboken or Jersey City in NJ. It costs like 2 dollars (for the PATH train) to get there for those who live in NYC, though people would have to pay da Jersey tax on items they buy there. But Egg already has the warehouse in Jersey so this wouldn't increase the number of people who have to pay taxes. And peeps in NY can go pick up stuff only if its urgent. Though again, it would have to be for small items. Just a thought.
