    Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

Can anyone tell me why i cant OC past 2.7Ghz when everything should be working?(and maybe help me too :D)

I can overclock the cpu to 2695 Mhz and it works but when i add the other 5 the computer freezes or stops and all it displays is the Cpu speed and on the bottom it says click Del or Esc to enter setup but its doesnt work.....

    voltage settings are:

    Cpu core: 1.35

    cpu fsb: 1.25

temps are under 51 deg C without adding volts and under 55 deg C with (Max, at 2.695Ghz)

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

It's possible that either your motherboard or your CPU aren't very good at overclocking. Even though hardware of the same type are built the same, a high overclock isn't always guaranteed, even when a CPU is known for overclocking well. One thing you could do is flash your motherboard to the latest bios (if you haven't already). Use a flash drive if possible; Windows flashing utilities are prone to bad flashes, and that could cause system instability.

How are you overclocking? Is it through the bios or via utility? Overclocking with a Windows utility has a higher risk of instability. A bios-based overclock is your best bet.

Are you using a stock or aftermarket cooler, and are those temps at load or at idle? If you're not running a load and getting those temps, then you're running way to hot and that's going to cause instability and you risk damaging your CPU.

If all those check out, try running Prime95 for a while at your current clock (and at stock speeds) and see if there are any errors. If it checks out, try a very small voltage bump to see if that helps. There will always be a point where a higher voltage is necessary to go further, and it differs with individual CPUs as well as models.

What stepping is your processor? If you don't know, check with CPU-Z. Different steppings overclock differently.

Again, it's always possible that your CPU just isn't a good overclocker.

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

I've checked in different website forums and some say that they overclocked on a 750i with a Q6600 G0 stepping to 3.5Ghz with those settings, but i couldn't do that, haveing the same things.

I'll see if there is a better bios for it and i been overclocking through bios with an aftermarket cooler(Arctic Freezer Pro  7) with those temps at full load with IntelBurnTest v1.9 for around 10 mins.

My temps are the same 30 idle and 50 full load stock to 2.695Ghz without changing volts but if i change volts i get full load at 55 at 2.695Ghz,( im trying to keep it under 58 or what is the max temp it can be if its gonna be on for around 12hrs a day? just for avg use and some gaming in between)

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

Ok DGD please take no offense if my questions to you seem to sound like your a noob at this but I don't know how much you know about computers or OCing, you have mentioned that you have adjusted your fsbs and a little on your voltage but no where have you mentioned what your RAM fsbs are nor if you have checked to see what they have raised up to when you have raised the cpu fsbs. So my question to you is, is your RAM clock fsbs still at 800 if not you need to change the clock ratio lower to reduce the RAM fsbs back to 800fsbs to keep your system stable and you must do this everytime you change the cpu fsbs.

Max temp according to intels spec sheet for a G0 Q6600 is 71 degrees and 1.5 volts. Meaning that is the max temp and volts intel claims is safe for 24/7 operation. Most of us try to keep them lower though

none taken, i am kinda noob at this and i aint good at explaining things either

well i left my cpu fsb and ram fsb unlinked so im only OCing cpu, but ram fsb only goes down and up(never over 800mhz) when i OC, but when i hit 2.7 it goes back to 800 actual and it fails xD

so do i change the ram fsb to make the actual fsb equal 800?

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

Ok did not know your mobo had that option. You should not have to change it if it does not go above the 800 give or take about 10fsbs, try relinking the ram to the cpu and adjust the clock ratio to bring it back down to the 800fsbs and see if that works. I never had any problem with hitting 3.3ghz with my Q6600 and when I upgraded to the P45 mobo and the Q9550 I upgraded the wife's rigg with the Q6600 and its running at 3.2ghz with no problems, the temps stay between 38C at idle to 51C at 75% load. Have you run a memtest on your ram or a prim95 on the cpu?

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

I've upgraded the bios and changes the Core volts to 1.378125 and cpu fsb to 1.375. Temps are fine( 31C at idle and 55 full load with Intelburntest), but  i still cant get to 2.7Ghz or higher

do i check the ram with memtest or with with prime95?

As Kardon said memtest, I googled that mobo for OCing and found this info I will let you read it, has some good info.

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

when the OC fails, on the display it shows the code 4E(Initialize APIC and set MTRR) on motherboard, does that mean that it freezes or i have to do that? What's MTRR?

I've used memtest and intelburntest and prime95(at 2695Mhz), all test passed so ill try to see if it can go higher. How do i know when to add volts to the cpu core, cpu fsb, etc.?current volts are stock ones

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

Basicly the code 4E just means that the APIC Initialization and the setting of the MTRR failed which is done by the BIOS automaticly, here is a link to Wikipedia's definition of MTRR.

should not need to add volts to get to 3 with a G0. You know when to add volts when the system is no longer stable. You should really only need to change the core voltage, leave the rest alone till your a pro Yes.

Oc as far as you can, then up the voltage one step and repeate untill you are happy with your oc. Not sure what cooler you are using but you may want to invest in something like the sunbeam core contact, one of the best coolers around and only runs about $30

What else can i do to try to make it work? nothing seems to be bad except for that 4E code which idk how to fix.

I got the Artic Freezer 7 Pro and a side air duct with 20C air going in :D, couldnt figure out the best fan placements tho(120mm rear exhaust, 120mm side cold air in, 2 80mm intake in front, and 1 80mm exhaust in front xD)

ill check out the sunbeam core contact cooler....

Are you sure you have the BIOS configured correctly, IE the EIST Function disabled, C1E, C2E, C4E and the Virtualization Technology disabled. Not having used this board I'm not sure of all the BIOS settings compared with the others but the info should be in your users manuel.

So the motherboard manual will tell me what those settings are for? and how to OC it?

Yes the manuel will tell you what those settings are for but no they will not tell you how to OC, now some manuels will advise you on what to disable what to enable others just tell you what the defaults are!

    Re: Can't OC past 2.7Ghz

ya hoghauler is right. You will want to disable those and any speed stepping you may find.

Also keep in mind the way cpus are made. They make a batch and whatever cpu clocks the lowest is what they label the whole bacth as. So while many people are lucky and get ones that can clock way higher someone has to be unlucky and get those cpus that max out near stock clocks.

There is also a member here who said his temps dropped a good 6-10 degrees when he switched from an artic cooler to the sunbeam core contact.

hopefully mine can get to 3.2Ghz at least.....no point in buying better cooling if i cant even get it past 2.7Ghz but if it can go over, ill try to get one :D

only settings i can enable/disable are C1E and Virtualization technology

Well that leaves 1 possibility left a dead spot, a point where the mobo/cpu won't OC to so the only way around this is to do a big OC to like 3.0ghz and try from there to move further up by small increments. I will download your mobo manuel and see what I can find just on the chance we missed something.
