So this whole PS3 thing...
Tempted to buy one, but at the moment I don't have enough reason to. Cost isn't an issue so long as I can justify paying for it. That being said I need to find a list of games that are PS3-exclusive or simply better played on PS3 than PC or xbox. What games are people excited about for PS3 in the coming year or two? What games are favorites or "must buy"s? I already have an xbox 360 and of course a PC. Just wondering if the PS3 is a good investment or if I should pass. I like the blu-ray availability, large HDD, and built-in wireless card ($100 for the xbox one is ridiculous). I just need to see if there are enough games out there I'd like. Stuff like FPS and RPG are my favorites but I also like a good action game or platformer. Also what media features are better on the PS3 than the xbox? I remember hearing a while back that the PS3 is more of a media center console than the xbox and wii (well, wii can't even play DVDs) but I dont remember why it was called that. What do the eggxperts think about the PS3?

Re: So this whole PS3 thing...
well two games that come to mind that are just for PS3 are Metal Gear Solid and Killzone 2 both awesome games i borrowed my friends PS3 and those games for a month just to play them. I hear the PS network, just like xbox live, is free and charges for game updates and not sure. The blueray is deffently a plus i was thinking of making my self a home theather pc but its cheaper to buy a PS3 and mod it out to fit my needs thinking of going that way. The wireless is another plus it costed me 100 bucks for the wireless adapter for my 360. Not sure about any other games those are the only two that really stand out to me any ways

Re: So this whole PS3 thing...
I remember you had an option to partition some of the HDD to install an OS (linux was first announced with later options for vista once they made drivers for the hardware). Is it still possible to install Linux on a PS3? That would make it a HTPC w/o the ability to act as a DVR but I wouldn't mind that so much if you could watch Hulu and downloaded videos off of the linux paritition. Not really use to the DVR. My parents own one and I used it once. I just keep forgetting to set record times and then I dont have time to watch it before the DVR deletes them.

Re: So this whole PS3 thing...
Yeah you can install linux, but its actually limited from what varient of Linux you can install on it I believe. As for its cost, it is very depenent to you. To be honest I almost reget buying it. The ONLY reason I am satisfied is because I got the 60 gig version that was discontinued. The reason I wanted it, is becuase it was the all out model that has everything that most of the consoles dont have now. Flash memory card reader, wireless internet AND network (some models did NOT have wireless at one point). I have 100% backwards compatibility with both PS2 and PSX games. And 4 USB ports.
To me the PS3 is a blu-ray player that can play the occasional game... I dont play a lot of games on it because it doesn't offer a lot of them. I have Killzone 2, which is a medicore shooter, Metal Gear Solid 4 which is a very good game but lasts WAAAAY too long in the cinematics and has terrible load times, and I play SOCOM Confrontation, which is a pretty good shooter if your into the socom series. I recomend researching which one you get from here. It will let you know a little more about it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3

Re: So this whole PS3 thing...
in all aspects Yes, the PS3 has a higher price tag than the xbox 360, but the ps3 doesnt have all of the little accessories that you would need for an xbox to function at a playable/Desirable capability. you want a game thats outstanding and rocks the online ps3 network, get Socom, its by far the only reason i stuck with sony and not switched over to microsoft and i am sure thousands of other people would agree with me. look into it. The online gameplay is amazing, there arent very many online, realistic (3rd) person shooters out there anymore, most are FPS online, so its adds a neat little twist not to mention how popular the franchise is there are always people online. vehicles, and lots of different game scenarios, not to mention how competitive the the clan system is. i think one of best parts is the authenticity of the game Zipper Interactive teams up with the Navy to make the game, so all of the content is 100%accurate and authentic. there are loads of weapons to chose from as well. i have to say that the online play is the best online experience i have ever endured on all of my years of gaming, Socom has the best online layout. The campaign is also pretty fun.

Re: So this whole PS3 thing...
Thanks guys. It looks like the PS3 is worth having. I'll just wait to see if they drop the price any time soon (the general speculation is that they will drop prices some either late summer or in the fall due to the economy being down and it's about time for another drop since the baseline system is still $400). It would be cool to buy a refurb'ed 60gb with the PS2 chip and extra USB ports, but I don't know how reliable gamestop/EB games used systems are :/

Re: So this whole PS3 thing...
Yeah, there seemed to be a lot of talk about it last week (googled "PS3 price cut" and found a lot of posts dated around June 26th 2009). I was suspecting a drop sometime soon so knowing that Sony is considering it "if the market warrants it" makes me want to wait a few months. I'm a little curious how well the slim will perform against the full-sized ones. I know that it has to play everything identical but with less space and less airflow I can't help but think it will run hotter. They also might make it more difficult to replace the HDD. Maybe they wont cut the size as much as the did with the PSOne and the slim PS2. And I guess it would only be proper for me to continue my streak of buying playstations after they move to a new case design. We shall see.

There have been rumors of the ps3 price drop to $300 since the beginning of the year but it keeps not happening. I would buy a ps3 but since I doubt I would use it much for gaming I don't want to pay $400 for primarily a blu ray player. Thinking I will just buy a stand alone player soon instead and never get a ps3. The Xbox 360 works fine for the amount of console gaming I do plus it seems to have more titles on it.

Re: So this whole PS3 thing...
Hehe. I already have a htpc with a hd dvd/blu ray optical drive, plus another of the same optical drive in my main pc, way over $300 spent on the htpc (in tv tuner cards alone ). I am just looking for a blu ray player that is less clunky to use (mainly due to the apps/programs that playback the discs) as I have a stand alone hd dvd player, as well as the hd dvd drive for the Xbox. Frankly I would probably be better off to just use the htpc for space left on the entertainment stand but I will make room as needed. Money is not really the issue other than $400 for a blu ray player just seems too high to me.

Re: So this whole PS3 thing...
I realized that if they ship a "slim PS3" for a lower price, the chances are that they will come as-is, no bundle. There are a couple of bundles out there that make the price roughly the same if you were to buy the extra stuff anyway. I saw a bundle with Little Big Planet, an 80gb PS3, and Wall-e on Blu-ray for the standard $400 price. There are a couple other bundles out there that look slightly less appealing. I'm not sold on Wall-e but a free blu-ray of a movie i've never seen is convenient and I plan on getting little big planet anyway. So basically if I find a bundle I like before the price-drop comes, I'll just go with that. I honestly don't see Sony dropping the price by $100 unless they make more cuts in the system. We've already seen them drop PS2 support, a media-card reader, and 2 USB slots. What's next? Thanks for the input guys.

Re: So this whole PS3 thing...
I am assuming you saw the email deal from this morning PS3 $359.99 which is about the first deal I have seen for a ps3 under $400, a $40 off deal I suppose. Though this leads me to a thought. Does NewEgg know of a upcoming ps3 price drop and puts the current stock on sale to clear it out before they go to $300? I am tempted to buy now at the deal price but I am thinking a regular price drop may be now very soon in the offing. I guess I have until Wednesday to decide.

Re: So this whole PS3 thing...
Personally I think the ps3 is well worth the $400 for the simple fact.. To many people forget the 360 is atleast $300, and if you want the elite its $400 same as the ps3 80gb one. But yet the ps3 doesnt need a wireless adaptor, as does the 360.. and alot of people play there systems wirelessly. Then the ps3 has the bluray drive, Oh plus you have the access to go web browsing on the ps3 you cant do with the 360. PS3 has free online play, yes its sometimes laggy, but i tell you its fine most the time. Also i notice with streaming from pc.. the PS3 stream better then the 360, plays more formats atleast from what i have tryed playing. Notice the 360 likes to glitch every 10-15mins threw out most videos over 2gb's also.
So as of right now.. I would still pay $400 for a ps3 just for the fact it may have a few downfalls, but the 360 has alot of them also, and as for people complaining about prices for the PS3.. 90% of people are gunna spend just as much on a 360 as someone will with the ps3, simply because not many people even use wired connections anymore, and 360's wireless adaptor is right at $100.

Re: So this whole PS3 thing...
I don't know if you didn't read my OP, but I already have a 360 and am considering a PS3 in addition to that. I admit that the PS3 is a better buy now that there are a handful of games worth playing (and a lot of the good xbox games are on PC as well). I'm not trying to figure out which system is better, just whether or not I want a PS3 to accompany my 360. I was looking more for suggestions on exclussive games that make the PS3 a worthwhile addition.

Re: So this whole PS3 thing...
Exclusive games are on their way out the door, companies can't afford, nor pass up the opportunity to increase their sales across multiple networks. Personally I don't think a few exclusive games are worth the cost of a buying a completely new system anyway. Especially when I can buy a blu-ray drive for my PC at half the cost. Granted PS3 has some juicy titles, like MGS3, and has built in wireless support an such, but when you factor in the cost of buying a wireless adapter for the 360, both systems are going to pretty much even themselves out.
I suppose its a "to each his own situation" You really have to ask yourself what your going to use that PS3 for? To just play a couple games? Browse the internet? Watch blu-ray movies? F@H...All of which a computer can take care of. (Emulation for the PS3 titles)

Re: So this whole PS3 thing...
theres is an amazing PS3 bundle on the way
PS3 80GB + Killzone 2 + Metal Gear Solid 4 = $399.99 Normally, hardware bundles are a spotty affair. A game you don't really
want, or two games, one you kinda want, one you just do not want. But
this bundle, on sale at Best Buy next Sunday, looks great!
Sent in by a Best Buy employee, and confirmed by other BB employees,
it's an 80GB PS3 bundled with copies of two of the biggest games on the
system: Metal Gear Solid 4 and Killzone 2. All that for the asking
price of a standard PS3, $400.
It's one hell of a bundle. It's like getting a Wii with Twilight
Princess and Mario Galaxy, or a 360 with Gears 2 and Halo 3. But
perhaps more importantly, it's also one hell of a saving; perhaps Best
Buy need to clear out their stock of 80GB PS3s for oh, I don't know, a
new PS3? http://kotaku.com/5305883/ps3-bundle-includes-mgs4-killzone-2

fable is xbox and PC only, fable 2 is only out on 360 now but you can probably expect it on the PC in the future older PS3's games can play PS2 games, anything ps3 before and including the MGS4 80GB PS3 bundle the new 80GB PS3 just got discontinued, so most likely a new rev or the heavily rumored slim PS3 + price cut is on the way later this year (they might bring back PS2 compatibility or release a firmware update for other PS3's to play PS2 games also (somewhat speculated in the 3.00 firmware)

Actually for the most part Sony has hinted that there will not be a change in their Backwards compatibility in the future. Both MS and Sony have cut off upgrading BC. The reason sony cut it in the first place was it cost too much to do it and for the most part it wasn't a large push for most gamers, so there is no need to spend the extra money to implement it. Which is why I am glad I got the 60 gb model when I did. I have both PSX and PS2 BC and wifi. it all works out in the end for me. To be honest I agree with getting rid of PS2 BC on the PS3, because right now the PS3s actual rival is the PS2. The PS2 is taking away all of the potentional PS3 sales. I cant seem to find the article again. but it explained that if Sony wants the PS3 to gain momentum, they need to stop selling the PS2 and releasing so many new titles for it. Even in Japan the PS2 is doing a huge amount better.. http://kotaku.com/5070267/ps3-making-money-psp-sales-up-ps2-outselling-ps3 Why
buy a 400 dollar system when you can buy a 100 dollar system and get
decent games? The only thing that makes games on the PS3 better is
graphics, and if you dont have an HDTV then you dont see much
difference in the end. (Thank god for my HDTV). Sony needs to
cut off BC and cut off the PS2 as a whole if it really wants the PS3 to
take off. Right now they see the PS2 as a cash cow, but thats the
problem, the PS2 is whats selling, not the PS3... http://kotaku.com/5070265/the-ps2-is-now-officially-an-open-platform

Re: So this whole PS3 thing...
The reason im even asking about PS2 games is cause i still have some of my old ps2 games from when i had my PS2. Was just wondering if i did ever get a PS3 if i could still use them. I so hope Fable 2 comes out on the PC,i played Fable 1 and it was awesome ,Fable 2 looks and sounds even more awesome. If i may ask what does BC mean? Havent had a console in a long time so im kinda out of the loop.
