nvidia cards

ati cards  Two lists of cards right there. I know it's a lot of cards, but thats what i got. I was hoping to build for under 500 bucks but it needed an opertating system, so without the card is 501 dollars. Which card is the best for the money out of all of those? I'm thinking a 3650, or 3850. obviously less money is better. There were also some nice 9400's in there. If you could give me your opinions on those cards, that would help. Also, the friend I am building this for really just wants to play CoD4 at 1440x900 so something like a 4650 or higher is not necessary.Just which inexpensive card will perform the best.

Well depending on what the mobo and system type you plan on building could also make a difference in which VC we would recomend and also the PSU you choose can affect which cards you could use with the setup you decide on. One thing I would advise is to make sure it has either a very good heatsink & fan or a fan on the VC cooling can be a big killer of VCs. Here is what I picked from your choices due to the fact they have 1gig of onboard memory!

I'm guessing that with AMD I should go with ATI, but, above i didn't specify enough, the person who wants this wants to play CoD4, which is built around nvidia i believe. So, if anyone could find benchmarks for video cards with CoD4, or tell me what they think that would help too.

Most BM for cards on CoD4 are the 9600GT, 9800GTX, 4850, 4870, CoD4 can choke a low end card. The 9600GT get about 28FPS low and high is about 75FPS. So as you can tell the 9500GT,9400GT ECT will be below that.

Well if your friend wants to play CoD4 which is Nvidia based then get the AMD Nvidia based mobo it is that simple, as for benchmarks TomsHardware is the best place to get those.

Well I play CoD4 with an RX800 128mb gddr1 from 2.5 years ago and get 90-150 fps.

Thanks for the help guys i finished up i believe. I did the best i could on the strict budget. I went with ATI and if my friend isn't satisfied, then he was foolish to think that i could build a good computer with about 230 dollars of hardware. (the rest being periphials and an OS).

In order to get those frame rates its either 640X480 or 800X600 rez with no AA, AAF, not turned on at all.

Yes that is because the 8600 was far superior over the ATI card at the time.

Also 1024X768 is very low end, see what happens at 1280X1024.

1600X1200 8X AA and everything in High detail. @ 60FPS on a 9800GTX+
