    velociraptor question

Hey all, so I have a single vraptor (not hooked up yet) I mainly bought it to cut down on boot times and over-all speed (currentyl i have a WD 500gig 7200rpm) but i was advised that a single vraptor wont rly cut down on boot times unless u have 2 in raid0 which i cant afford so is the vraptor worth it in my case? or should i return it?? Huh? thanks all!

    Re: velociraptor question

Well, the velociraptor will boot faster. Mainly because you'll be doing a fresh windows install, and it'll boot faster than it does with all the software and everything else on the drive. Getting a velociraptor to cut down boot times just sounds funny, a $300 drive should be used for specific purposes, besides cutting boot times. I would have gotten the speedy 640GB Western Digital drive at third the cost and basically twice the capacity. If you look at benchmarks for, it would satisfy your needs.

I've got 74GB Raptor at my work computer, and one at my home computer. Raptors/velociraptors are great drives, but you have to utilize them in correct ways to get the best out of it.

    Re: velociraptor question

According to benchmarks Ive seen a vraptor is almost as fast as a raid 0 with the orginal raptors. If this is true youll see a cut in boot times, and loading times. Best advice for your situation is only put ur OS, and games on the drive. Also you do video editing this maybe a good choice as well and then transfer the file onto your other hd. The vraptor looks really nice, but my old raid 0 is like a rock.. When I orginally got my first 10k drive i did notice a difference and it was nice, but the raid 0 did put the icing on the cake.. So if those drives are benched correctly and are almost as fast as a the old drives in a raid 0 you should be plenty happy with the drive.

If all else fails load your os and everything else on run it and see if your happy with the way it loads. If not send it back... It cant hurt and the worse is you say ok wasnt worth it, and you get 250 back out of 300, but its only for restocking and shipping to send it back. And then you say oh well it was an experimient and it nots for me.. Now you'll know and you wont have to wonder, install the drive and I think you'll be hooked after the first boot...

    Re: velociraptor question

A clean instal would be the best way to do it so thats what I would recommend, but you could transfer it. I just would reccomend bcking everything up and doing a clean install.. So that way later on if you have a failure you would already have all your programs and extra files backed up.

    Re: velociraptor question

Well you can't just copy a piece of software and expect it to work. For one, there are registry values that are in place for different software. DLL Files spread all around the computer for some software. The best you can hope for copying game files so you don't have to start from the first step.
