Help CPU issue!! I have questions...

Ok if its one thing I learned since i joined is that you guys on this site r a great goup of ppl and ever since I did my build last feb, and when ever i had a question, problem or anything you guys have always come to the rescue.. So i would like to begin by saying thank you and helping out a dummy like me... lol

So here is my problem now.. I upgraded my cpu from a intel E6300 to a intel Q6600(very excited about) but i bought a OEM version on newegg, with no fan & heat sink cuz i figured "hey im not going to overclock it so i can use my old one" but im going to go off on a limb here and say I was wrong cuz my machine keeps overheating.. Crying

So now im at a stand still as to what to do... geek squad told me it should work, then i was told to buy Silver thermal compound, then i was told to get a new fan & heat sink unit... So what do I do gang?? if i need to buy a new unit any recommendations?? is the Thermal compound just a temporaly solution? as always any other suggestions would b great as well.. Ohh I dont plan on overclocking this rig at least not yet.. Big Smile

    Thanks again for the help!

O ouch on the bad advice from geek squad. the Q6600 make allot more heat than you old one did.

you always need to use the thermal paste!!!!

    heres how:

heres a nice heatsink that should be easy to install.

gms is right the Q6600 is going to have a higher TDP, but you still might be alright with your old HSF.

good thermal compound is going to be essential arctic silver 5 is the best should be between 5 and 10 bucks depending on where you buy it.

If you get the termal compound well in place and even and you're still getting high temps then look into a new HSF.

If it were me I would replace the HSF,and make sure the paste is applied correct(cool's pic) not that much $$ to make sure you have your CPU protected.

If I were you, I'd replace the HSF asap. I would recommend against using any stock HSFs. I'm a big fan of Thermaltake. They're well-made products, and they offer all the overkill you'd ever need (provided you buy the right one for your CPU). I've also heard very good things about Asus and Rosewill.

The Thermaltake DuOrb is compatible with your new processor, and it's probably one of the best coolers you're going to get outside of liquid cooling or blowing the air from a freezer into your case.

yes, it is better to change a HSF.

you can go with thermaltake  like this one:

or 15bucks more, you can choose this one:

and any good HSF will make you cpu run cooler.
