connecting front panel firewire w/o mobo support

    Hey fellow eggers!

I am building a new computer for photo/video editing.  Unfortunately, I ordered a motherboard without firewire.  I realize that a quick fix would be to order a firewire pci card, but I'd like to have access to the firewire port on the front panel of my case.

Is there any way to connect the front panel port to a firewire pci card?  Note: the wire coming from the Case's firewire port has the pins intended for 1394 pins on the motherboard, so I cannot just connect it to the internal firewire port located on many of those firewire pci cards.

Also: what is the difference between 1394A and 1394B?  I'm just using the port for future video imports and lots of action with my Lexar memory card reader (photos).

Any solutions?!! Thank you in advance!

Get yourself a Firewire card with a regular internal 6pin connector. Then get this little cable. "IEEE 1394 CABLE 1' - 6 pin M to 2x5 M"

    Edit: 1394a = 400mbs, 1394b = 800mbs speed

1394b devices is more rare than 1394a

Thanks SergeiV - I've been looking for such a card - no luck yet.

Also, I don't think I would need that cable because that is exactly the type that the case includes.

"6 pin" will be a good search term.  I'll check it out -thanks!

You take 6pin part of the cable I showed ya and stick it into the internal connector of the firewire card, you take the other end of the cable (which resembles a motherboard firewire pin plug) and plug that into your cable that runs to the front case firewire port.
