  How much if any, performance gain should I expect from an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 2.5 Ghz Brisbane core processor, over an Intel Pentium D 2.8 Ghz processor. Is there any major difference, and if so, will it be noticeable?

Up to 50% increase in processing speed. Taking a rendering benchmark as the basis, since they tend to utilize both cores 100%.

They should have some differences. Intel dual cores almost always cost less than AMD's, which makes them look more attractive, but generally speaking, tests have proven AMD dual cores better for gaming on high-end systems. AMD is a superior processor in my experience and I've dealt highly with both.

Intel is a nice inexpensive way to get a computer working, but AMD is performance hands down

Wow, interesting are you sure you are not kidding?  intel dual core costs less than AMD  and AMD better for high-end system?
