Hello guys,i have socket 754 mobo and i decided to upgrade my AMD Sempron 3400+  to Athlon 64 3400+. I know  its better to build a dual core pc with dual channel RAM but right now i can't afford it so i just want to upgrade ma cpu for now.  SO the question is what is more importante when buying a cpu, higher frequency or larger L2 cache. For example i am planning to buy AMD Athlon 64 3400+ , 2.4 GHZ, 512 kb L2 cache, and there is another similar processor  AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 2.2 GHZ, 1 MB L2 cache.  SO which one will performe better in especially in Gaming,

Sempron 3400+ runs at 2 GHz, just like Sempron 3300+ and Athlon 64 3200+. The difference between these three CPUs is the amount of L2 memory cache. While Sempron 3400+ has 256 KB of L2 cache, Sempron 3300+ has 128 KB and Athlon 64 3200+ has 1 MB.

One thing you must keep in mind is that the AMD numbering system can only be used for comparison between processors from the same family. You could think that the 3400+ of this CPU means that it is faster than a Athlon 64 3200+, for example, which is not the case, since Athlon 64 3200+ has four times more L2 memory cache than Sempron 3400+. This number can be only used for comparison among other Sempron CPUs.

This new Sempron processor has the 64-bit instructions activated, which makes it a true Athlon 64 CPU but with less memory cache. So you can think of Sempron 3400+ as a “light version” of Athlon 64 3200+.

So can anyone else give their eggxpertise? If you had to decide between AMD Athlon 64 2.4 GHZ, 512 kb L2 cache, and similar processor  AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 2.2 GHZ, 1 MB L2 cache which one would you choose to buy especially for gaming purposes? In other words, what is more important to gain  performance in gaming, higher frequency or larger L2 cache ?

With intels I'd say go with the larger Cache. but my experience with AMD tells me to go with the higher MHz

But it sounds like you need to link the processors you are talking about, because I think they use different sockets on those two you are asking about.

no, belive me they use the same socket. THat godamm Athlon 3700+ has both 1 MB of L2 cache and 2.4 Ghz but its too damn expensive for  and antiqueted chip that was made in 2003. some 3700 + cost 200 bucks and more !!!

your right they use the same socket I would go with the 2.4
