Hello,

I have been slightly overclocking my e8200.  I have got it now to 3.2ghz, but my temps are reaching 60-67 under load while testing with orthos, and 33 to 35 at idle.  I am using realtemp to measure the temperature.  I beleive my Voltage is around 1.18?? in the bios.  CPUZ reads voltage around 1.152 to about 1.17.  I am not sure what temperature I should start to get worried and back off.  I am currently using a Xigmatek 1283 cooler.  Any information would be appreciated.

The temperatures seem to be too high, especially since it's a 45nm processor.

Here are some tests on a E6850 which is a 65nm processor. They max out at 54*C at 3.6Ghz.

 

the E8200 uses a multiplier of 8 so you are running a a much higher fsb to hit 3.2 than say an e8400 or e6850 would need. Your temps are fine as long as your build is running stable. Most Intel procs are rated for about 100c so high temps are not going to hurt anything as long as you are stable.

Are you referring to the "Thermal Specification"? (Source) 72.4*C?

no am reffering to TJMax which is the temp at which the proc will shut down at. Although I could have referd to the thermal specificattion which is the temp he can safely run 24/7

So at what temperature should I start to get concernced?  Also, I have a Gigabyte DS3L and also have Easy Tune 5 which shows a lower temperature.  Which utility should I trust?

Well, now my system is acting odd.  I went to up the FSB a little and retest with orthos.  but now cpuz, windows, and orthos only recognizes my FSB at 333 and 2.66Ghz.  Even if I decrease the FSB below stock it still only recognizes 333.  I tried to clear the CMOS and that did not help.  Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

If you push the overclock too far, the ds3l bios will set the controls back to automatic/defaults to allow it to post.  If your pc is hanging up a bit before posting after you set it, this is most likely the cause.  You will have to go back in to bios and reset them to manual and then adjust the settings enough to get it to post.  While annoying, this is much easier than having to reset CMOS every time.

 As for Easy Tune 5, I found that nearly useless and uninstalled it.  Real Temps is supposedly the most accurate for 45nm processors, so that is what I have been using for my e8400.  My e8400 is at 4.0ghz and stays under 50 degrees at load, however.  And that is with a 92mm OCZ Vendetta with fan on low.  Your cooler should perform even better.  You may want to try reseating the heatsink and make sure you didn't use too much paste.

I will check the cooler and see if everything is seated correctly.  Now I know I will need to clean the CPU and the Cooler.  I have rubbing alcohol, but what should I put the alcohol on to clean off the CPU and Cooler?

3.2 would only require a 400mhz fsb at 8x multiplier.  It should be able to handle that easy at stock voltages.  My e8400 was at 3.6(400x9) without any added voltage and it was only a few degrees warmer than stock.  I believe the 45nm processors shut down at 95 degrees, but I wouldn't recommend running anywhere near there.

Are you using software to overclock or the bios?  Bios is always going to be better.  The only thing that should default to 100 is the pci bus which is where it should be. 

 
For cleaning the cpu/heatsink, you want an anti-static cloth or I have heard coffee filters work well.
 

I have been using the BIOS only.  But, I decided to try and clear the CMOS again, now everything is working ok.  I still have temps in the 55 degree range at 3.0 Ghz.  I am going to try and look at the Heatsink and make sure I have the thermal paste right.

I took out my heatsink and processor and I cleaned off all the thermal paste.  I then added just a rice size drop of thermal paste to the processor, then reseated the heatsink.  This dropped my temps about 15deg C.  Now, I am continuing the process of overclocking.  Got it to 3.3Ghz at about 1.2 voltage.

I have been able to get my E8200 to 3.6 Ghz 450 x 8with voltage at 1.325 in Bios.  My memory is 1:1 at 4 4 4 12.  Temps seem to be OK.
