    Q6600 OC 3DMark score

I recently built a pc with the following specs:

    GIGABYTE GA-P35 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128064

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 OC'd to 3ghz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017

    ZOTAC GeForce 8800 GT 512MB OC edition (700mhz/2000mhz) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500006

    G.SKILL 2GB DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231144

    My 3DMark score is 7418

    sm 2.0 score-2781

    sm3.0 score-3700

    cpu score-2007

I have a friend with almost the exact same setup (Q6600 OC'd to 3ghz) video card is XFX 8800Gt OC edition (600mhz/2000mhz) but he has 4gb of pc2 6400 ram. He has vista 32-bit so he can only use 2.75 gb of it so he only has .75 gigs more ram than me.

So basically we have the same processor, my vga is slightly faster, he has a little more ram but mine is faster.

    His 3DMark score is 12135

    sm 2.0 score-5004

    sm 3.0 score-5009

    cpu score-4138

Can someone please tell me why his score is so much higher than mine. I dont know what the sm 2.0/3.0 scores are, but i see no reason why his cpu score is almost double mine when we have the exact same cpu. What other components play a factor in the score? Please help! This is driving me crazy! Thanks.

btw...if you want to brag about your scores go ahead.

    Re: Q6600 OC 3DMark score

What resoltion are you running the test at? and what did he run it at? (makes a big difference sometimes)

If that's not it, you have a problem, have you reinstalled drivers? Tried turning off programs in the taskbar?

    Re: Q6600 OC 3DMark score

My screen was set at 1680x1050 and i believe he ran it one step down at 1600x1200. Would that small difference in resolution make that big of a difference? There is essentially nothing running in the taskbar. Ill check the drivers

    Re: Q6600 OC 3DMark score

CPU makes a big difference in 3DMark06.  See my score in my sig and you'll see just how big.  Does windows see all four cores running?  1600x1200 is higher than 1600x1080, it's not a step down.  It shouldn't matter either way unless you both are using the pro version of 3DMark and not the free version.  1280x1024 is the only resolution that the free version will let you run.  Since you have a widescreen monitor I don't know if 3DMark will run at that resolution since it's not standard for widescreen monitor.

Unless you guys are running stock cooling, you should both be able to hit 3.3 Ghz on those Q6600s (you may be able to hit that even on stock cooling).

    Re: Q6600 OC 3DMark score

Drivers have been reinstalled and still no change. Windows is recognizing all 4 cores. Any other ideas? I've had a couple minor problems with the mobo so there could be a chance it is malfunctioning. Could a bad mobo cause this? Please keep the ideas coming

    Re: Q6600 OC 3DMark score

You should both make sure you are running the tests at "stock" settings *IN 3DMARK06*.

If your 3Dmark is running the test at 1650x1080, and his is 1280x1024 (the "STOCK" setting) that coudl very well be responsible for the score difference.

    Re: Q6600 OC 3DMark score

Do you have a decent psu so that the card is getting enough juice? Many cards will run at lower settings if they are not getting good power.

You may also want to check you system temps as the cpu speed can also throttle if it is getting too hot.

If you can in your bios make sure you pci express slot is running at 16x

I doubt the problem is Bios related but it could just be a bad mobo.

I can think of many slight tweaks that could help a bit but why your 3dmark06 is half of what it should be I'm at a loss

Because the graphic and cpu scores of the pc are low I think there is most likely something going on that's cpu related.

The rig in my sig is pretty much the same setup as you guys,

at 3.0ghz and stock graphics clock speeds I was getting = 13726

    3.1 and 8800gt @ 730core and 1071(2129)mem = 14693

Dunno why Skull commented like the way he did, this is a technical support thread not a "brag about your score" thread.

domtow, are you sure you're both using the same version? Check your video drivers too. Get screenshots of both yours and his 3Dmarks so we can verify settings?

    Re: Q6600 OC 3DMark score

psu is antec true power 550w http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371002

seems like sufficient power to me. i ran a power supply calculator than said i would need at least approx. 350w. I believe i have more than enough.

system temps are fine. cpu idles in low 40s C and 55C loaded (when oc to 3ghz) and vga idles around 50C and low 60s C loaded.

I also believe its cpu related. If this isnt resolved by next weekend Im going to put my cpu in my friends system and see how it works. That should determine if the cpu is bad. I wish i could swap them sooner but he's out of town.

    Re: Q6600 OC 3DMark score

I am currently reinstalling 3dmark06 to make sure there wasnt a glitch in the install and to ensure we installed the same version. Ill run the test again tonight.

Video drivers are up to date.

Ill get him to send me some screen shots and post that later.

Thanks for your help guys. Keep it coming

    Try this http://service.futuremark.com/results/showSingleResult.action?resultId=7113522&resultType=14

That is my most recent run after reinstalling 3dmark06. Notice my score has dropped a few hundred points despite the overclock to 3.3ghz

There's defiantely something going on, what are you using to OC your card?  Do you have Intel's power saving features turned on?  Does your CPU speed always show the same Mhz even when at idle?  Can you download SIW http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html and do a report and post it?

    Re: Q6600 OC 3DMark score

Only recommendations I can make are:

    1) Turn off Speed Step

    2) Update to Latest DirectX 9 patch

    3) disable any/all background tasks including firewall and anti virus before running 3Dmark again.

    Re: Q6600 OC 3DMark score

Using the bios to oc. I don't think i have power saving turned on. I didnt manually turn it on but it may be on by default. How do i check? The cpu does not always stay at the same mhz. When computer is idle the multiplier drops down to x6 and the core speed drops to 2ghz

I ran an siw report. How do i post it?
