    Newegg Item Indexing

When making a new build (especially the first few times you do it), you can't help but wonder what components seem to be the most compatible. Right now, it seems the best method is to read reviews and see other people's specs, and listen to their feedback on what memory works good on what motherboard, for example.

I also noticed that Newegg has a "Combos & Essentials" link when viewing certain items. This helps suggest a product that you could use with the item you're viewing, which is helpful.

My suggestion/idea is to have an index of compatibility, which would help people decide which components work well with other components (i.e. RAM and motherboard). For example, Mushkin seems to get really positive feedback when paired with an ASUS motherboard, while some people say Crucial Ballistix doesn't OC well with ASUS boards (just an example, not necessarily saying anything about either brand); other brands of memory work well with certain chipsets. Or which CPU has the highest overclocking potential on a DFI board?

I think the best approach would be to set up some kind of index that catalogues how one component works with another component. So if I select a certain Mushkin set of memory, I could compare its performance on a 780i, 790i, and X38/48 board. There could be options like "ease of installation", "ability to run at advertised speed", "overclocking potential", etc. You could rank it 1-5 (worst to best), and having an N/A option (if you don't overclock, for example, or if you select a hard drive, since you can't really overclock those) would eliminate the problem of people giving false ratings if that criteria never came up.

I know that's kind of a big idea, but it would really help people decide what the best option for their system is. I know when I first built my system, I wasn't sure about what I should get, and even though I lucked out, I know others haven't. It would give people more confidence in their decision.

I just wanted to see if people thought this would be helpful, or if the time invested in creating something like this wouldn't be worth it.

That's an interesting idea you've got there, but I think there'd be too much effort needed to implement it.

What I'd like to see is a guide in a way for getting a list of components for a new system. For instance, you could start out with a specific processor, then Newegg would give you a list of motherboards to choose from, after that, it'll give you a list of RAM modules, then Video Cards, hard drives, etc. and finally Power Supply and case recommendations based on expected system load and motherboard size.

Then for instance, if the Newegg system knew how many SATA ports the motherboard had, and you wanted to get 4 SATA DVD burners and 5 SATA hard drives, it'd give you an error and tell you that the Mobo doesn't have that many SATA ports. Also, if you picked 9 SATA devices, it'd go ahead and limit your Case options.

As far as hard drives go, I'd like to see calculations of how many cents each GB costs, so it'd be easier to pick out which hard drives have the best price to capacity ratio.

    Re: Newegg Item Indexing

that is a cool suggestion  but i have to say it is hard to create such a category. yep, asus  works well with Mushkin but my  Kinstone memory works well with Asus mobo too. theoretically, most of  products  are compatible with each other but it  is hard to say which  component works best with the other components.

but i am always goggling such info  when i try to buy something new. if the NE will create such a category.that will be of great help/

Well, should say u really have a quite decent and u also got my vote, but i have to mention that newegg doesn't provide technical support or advice on products that they sell, so not quite optimistic with its carrying out! unless NE would change its policy about this! XD

    Re: Newegg Item Indexing

Sorry, I should have clarified. This would be part of the user-feedback, where people provide their feedback based on their experiences. So it would be similar to the rating system, but applied to "how it works with other products".

And yeah I know it does seem like a big project, and that's why I wanted to see if people thought it would really be worth all the effort or not.
