    New build...screen goes off.

I built a computer about 2 months ago.  All parts are new.  After 10 to 20 minutes the monitor goes black.  The monitor screen starts to flicker and in about 5 seconds it goes black. The computer is still running.  Have to hold the off button for 5 seconds to shut off computer

I have a Antec 900 case with 4 fans going strong and don't think it is a heat issue.  It's not the video card...changed the card (EVGA 9600GT and 7300LE GeForce).  It's not the video cable...changed the cable.  It's not the video driver...deleted and reinstalled nividia drivers for my EVGA 9600GT.  I don't know what to do next...any suggestions? Visa 32 bit Home premium, GA-EP35-DS3P motherboard,  Q6600 CPU with Zalman 9500, 4 gig G.SKILL mem, 750 watt hec Zephyr psu, 500 gig Samsung SpinPoint hard drive and 245BW Samsung monitor.

Anything showing up in Event Viewer? If it goes for 10-20 minutes, hopefully it's something Vista TS is picking up, and you can still access it. Vista's Event Viewer is suppose to be better diagnostics, though so far , it seems similar to XP myself. Worth a shot.

does this happen all the time regardless of what you are doing or only when the computer is at idle for 10-20 minutes?

What resolution are you running on the monitor?  Theres a few it doesn't like.       (I have the same monitor, love it!)

Have you tried another monitor? or hooked up your TV at the same time so you can see if the tv still has picture when the monitor blacks out?

It happens when ever.   Different cards different resolutions.. Currently using the older card at 1600x1200.  The other day it an for over an our before it went back.  ??????  On the 24" Samsung I run it at top resolution.

    Re: New build...screen goes off.

This may be a shot in the dark, but you got another PSU around to test it out? I've heard both pos and neg things about them Hecs.

At least to discount any power issues. wondering if maybe bad PCIE slot. I had a Foxconn once with one, drove me absolutely bananas trying to figure out a similar issue. Finally found it was the slot.

So there's a couple things to look at.

After 10 to 20 minutes the monitor goes black.  The monitor screen starts to flicker and in about 5 seconds it goes black.

The key to troubleshooting this issue is the answer to the question, is the monitor in sleep mode or in normal mode ?

If the monitor is in normal mode, then this is a GPU related issue. (a bad cable would typically generate odd colors or a 'no signal' msg on the display.)

If the monitor is in sleep mode, then internally it is malfunctioning. I've seen several do this.  components inside it over=heat, or it's own psu malfunctions.

It may not be easy to tell which mode it is in though.  The LCD type I refer to above, all did something with the color of the power button, or a lighted ring around it.  Some change color depending on the mode, some slowly flash when asleep.....you'll need to figure out what yours is.

That said, is seems to me you've already eliminated everything BUT the monitor as it is....

Easiest next step, take the monitor to another computer and let it run to see if it does it.

    Re: New build...screen goes off.

It was the monitor. It went black on my girl friends computer in about 20 minutes. It got very hot.  Wonder what caused this problem. The monitor is only 3 months old and I paid a lot of money ($400.00 plus). Now the problem begins.  Can't find the receipt for the monitor.

    Re: New build...screen goes off.

Found the receipt. Got the monitor exchanged at Sam's------all fixed.  The monitor is the only part I bought at Sam's and was an easy exchange ($399.98 plus tax).  The rest of my computer build was purchased at Newegg. Many thanks to all..
