How do Mail - In rebates work?

For example,  I wanted to order an EVGA video card yesterday and noticed that there was a mail-in rebate for $30 off  which expired on 4/01/08, (today). I decided not to buy it because I figured the rebate would never make it through the mail to the manufacturer in one day.

so my question is, does the manufacturer, (EVGA in this case), have to recieve the rebate by the stated rebate expiration ??

     or

Is the rebate expiration date just the last day the rebate is available to print out ??

    sorry for my ignorance, lol

Usually rebates expire on the date listed and your purchase has to occur on or before that date.  However, always download the condition of the rebate (the pdf file that newegg has on any rebate) and read it thoroughly, for any and all conditions of the rebate.

Myself, I try not to factor that into the cost of my purchase, I just like to think of it as a bonus, but if I don't get them through I don't worry too much.  I find that in many cases the rebates aren't worth the hassle, but in some items they can be!

Re: How do Mail - In rebates work?

Just to expound on DTM's fine response, your order invoice date has to be within the rebate time frame, so if you had order it before Midnight on the 1st, you would have been fine. Don't fret though, EVGA usually repeats rebates on items, they just start a new time range. usually anyways. Also, when you do submit for a rebate, they'll also have a time window for you to get it in the mail. This is the tricky part, because you have to wait for the shipping days, which takes days of getting it mailed, obviously, but also have to ensure you got a good product, because Newegg will require the packaging back complete, even with the UPC off the box, that you'd have  to send in to the rebate handler. But again, as DMT instructed, just make sure you read and understand all the terms and conditions off the reabte, and you're fine as long as you meet them.

    Peace, Penewah!

Re: How do Mail - In rebates work?

    fine print is your friend!

last time I submitted a MIR, it specifically said on it that it could be received up to 2 months past the date of expiration.   basically, a purchase is a contract agreeing to trade money for an item (yea im simplifying this) and MIRs are just like extra parts of the contract. ("hey if you buy it, the manufacturer has agreed to give you some of the money back!") the expiration date on the MIR offer is just the cut-off date for when you have to buy it to get the offer, additional rules are available on the MIR form.

as for downloading the form, Newegg has a whole database of all the rebates.

    Always download the pdf/form.

And always keep copies.  They like to lose things, heck I mailed and faxed 3 times to netgear rebate, and it took almost a year to get their rebate.

Basiclly the rebates are 3rd party who make money based off statistics, so for each person that doesn't have time to, or forgets to follow up, is money they make.

Re: How do Mail - In rebates work?

I HATE mail in rebates. I can attest that you do not always get them, they often take forever and keeping track of them and chasing them down is a pain. If price were my reason for choosing something I totally discount the rebate in my thinking. If it comes in fine and a bonus but don't count on it. IMHO the WORST company at honoring rebates is Symantec (Norton). I feel that theirs are almost a scam but that is based on my experiences with them.

If you don't have a street address to which USPS will deliver, Mail in rebates are useless, they always exclude PO boxes.

Re: How do Mail - In rebates work?

The thing that sucks about rebate is that you gotta wait for them to send you your discount back, which may take some time.

    "How do mail-in rebates work?"

They don't. Wink  Sometimes they work, other times it's too much aggravation to see through.  Hence I never buy anything based on a mail-in rebate.  Maybe I'm missing out...

Re: How do Mail - In rebates work?

I would assume that they have to recieve your mail in rebate before the expiration date. Maybe not, sometimes it just goes by the date on the receipt. You would have to read the fine print as someone else already suggested in this thread.

I've had a successful experience with mail in rebates even though it takes a few months to recieve the money; it will put a smile on your face when do you recieve the check, because by then you've forgotten about it lol.
