I've been wanting to create a series for the Window's user. The series (for now called 'The man Pages') will be geared to windows users wanting to make the switch but too afraid due to not understanding the differences. Unfortunately my plate is full right now but I'd like to push this forward. The series will be a number of blog posts (it will most likely get Newsletter recognition) that outline what Linux is about, how it's different, and will eventually go all the way into installing Linux, tweaking it, maintaining it, and installing/configuring some of the common packages out there (SAMBA, VNC, ssh, etc)--as well as some BASH. Interested? Post up! We will need to write out a draft of the series, from start to finish, figure out who is savvy in what, and get the right people to draft/edit the posts.

Re: Calling on Linux Users!
I am most interested in this, but I am as yet learning the ubuntu path right now. So novice I am in the Linux world, but learning quickly. I have successfully setup a couple of installations, both on a laptop and a couple of different desktops. (not that ubuntu makes that difficult, however) I would be willing to help out though. I know I have plenty to learn.

Re: Calling on Linux Users!
I would be interested in this as well. I don't know anything distro-specific, but I know a fair amount of what underlies a linux system. I haven't yet had cause to use the programs you listed, but I am fairly strong in bash commands and scripting, so I'm sure I could help out there. As far as configuring and maintaining, I tend to go the old-school route of editing text files and such, not a good draw for newer users, but possibly useful.

Re: Calling on Linux Users!
I would love to help out, although as you can see my time on here is somewhat sporadic. I have some experience with SuSE and Fedora but much more with Ubuntu and also the K and X alternatives. Most of what I know relates to the Multimedia end as I use MythTV with an analog and digital tuner and getting multiple types of systems to connect to it including other linux pc's, windows boxes, xbox and a ps3. I am also familiar with transcoding and making video dvds and I can do pretty well with bash too. You've seen some of the other stuff as well so I'll stop there, but definitely keep me in the loop. ralyon

You've been on a Linux rampage today Ralyon :-) I think we have enough people now. If all of you are still interested, I'll see about getting us a private thread. If anyone else would like to join, feel free to post up in here. I will contact the rest of you via PM on when we have our thread.

I would love to join in. I have some experience scripting in bash, sh and csh as well as a decent amount of experience in red hat, fedora, suse, k/ubuntu, dsl, slackware, mandriva and mint. I also play with wine and cedega for the gaming and windows compatibility end of things (for those who just aren't ready to embrace open source alternatives yet).

*blank stare I definitely need to learn more! All I have is Ubuntu 7 right now. And I like how it works, easy to use, but has potential. Anything I should be pointed to to help me with it more? Keep in mind I am a dial-up user still, (DSL is around the corner I think) but I download things on the weekends at the Fiance's place.

You have dial-up while your Fiance has DSL? I would think it would be time to consolidate expenses. I would recommend reading in the Ubuntu Docs as they have a lot of useful info there. ralyon

Re: Calling on Linux Users!
Hello Root! I have been involved with baseline operating systems and hardware for a long time, especially Unix and Linux. I can bring much in the way of experience, as well as resources - my varied and lengthy involvement in the computer industry has yielded a plethora of people throughout the industry. My company is (and has been) actively involved with many projects and subsequent standards, such as OSS, OpenGL, WiFi, and all aspects of hardware-related issues (drivers..). I would be happy to hear what people want and need in the way of Linux and Solaris. Count me in!

Re: Calling on Linux Users!
I could write about my experiences with linux as a new user, if you'd like. It wasn't a horror story or anything like that, so it might encourage users if they read a positive user experience from a fellow newb.

Re: Calling on Linux Users!
This sounds fun as I am running Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn but I am updating it right now to be 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon I could definitely shed some light on some controversial Linux issues ("but I can't run my games" or "I can't use the same programs in Windows"). I have WINE setup nicely to allow me to play all games although my laptop is a celeron with integrated graphics, it can technically play games! :P I did play Counter-strike once and it was approximately 5FPS vs. my Desktop at around 500FPS :-). But regardless, I was able to tweak my laptop with Linux quite well to accommodate my needs and just for messing around. I think it's a great Operating System and the more people using it, the more programs/applications will be written for it, thereby shaving even more of Microsoft's stranglehold on the Operating System market. Ok, rant over :-) Slmclarengt

Re: Calling on Linux Users!
I run a site dedicated to getting folks switched over to linux. When I used to teach A+ we always included a Linux build when we got to operating systems. many of those former students are now Linux admins.... So I woul very much like to be involved if you still need help.

Re: Calling on Linux Users!

Rock on. We haven't done much yet with this, due to the holidays, but we will hopefully get back into the swing of things. I'll see about you getting added. Eggxpect a PM from myself or an Egg Staffer.

Re: Calling on Linux Users!
I'm sure we'd all welcome the help. I, for one, would definitely like to get the project off the ground quickly, now that the holidays are over.

I thought about that after I posted. I guess I should've known better heh. I thought it might be cool for you guys to setup a live demonstration through VNC after you get the ball rolling...

Has anyone else ever seen the "Microsoft Windows * Starts Here" tutorial cds? I have been thinking of doing something similar to that actually. Very similiar to what you are talking about root.
