Thanks for the feedback!  I thought it'd be a nice way to keep it a bit fresher if I wasn't able to get to it as regularly as I have in the past.  I think I'm going to leave the memory/motherboard/CPU all as they are, perhaps a quad core alternative for the Intel.

I would love to, but my free time for this has been getting less and less.  It takes a long time to refresh the ones I do have already.

Glad you like the i7 builds!

Somehow no matter what budget I have, I tend to come up short.  I'm greedy, LOL.

Yeah, I think the Dual cores should stay the same for a while... And my doubt of dual cores (for my uses) has just about vanished... E8400 @ 4ghz is freakin sweet =D I can't believe how fast video cards are going down, though... tigerdirect had the 9800gtx+ on sale a while ago for 120 bucks... and so are newegg's prices...

I still think this should be a WIKI rather than just a forum post so people like myself can also add opinions and we can do community development rather than rely on one person to always have time to keep it up to date.

Hey, jsv35! I seemed to notice that unless I'm wrong, the Phenom II tri cores are not compatible with the motherboard! Apparently, they use different socket types, unless I'm wrong...

    Nvm... lol

    Re: jsv35's Budget Builds (Updated 2/27/09) + Core i7

    Nicely done.

    Congrats!

Everyone has preferences. Mine is to stay completely away from Micro ATX mobo's and mini-towers.

I would of enjoyed seeing Intel i7 LGA 1366 socket Builds to a higher limit just for fun.

The 920 cpu is par at best.

Now that prices have dropped and the Phenom II is also avail.

PLease make a new list on the Intel i7's and AMD Phenom II.

    Thanks!!!!

Agreed on staying away from the mini-towers. Personally, I prefer having something with room for growth.

i think that custom build for beginer with very low budget should be most at $300, i know there are parts on newegg can do this

AM3 processors are backwards compatible with AM2+ motherboards. All that's needed is the latest bios.

What does "more than casual gamer" mean? If you mean HL2 or Crysis, the answer will be different, because you need much more power for one than the other (assuming you want uber-pretty eye candy).

I think, with an 285 will be fine, an 295 too expensive & not compatible/performs with all game(SLI related)

I would think that it depends on the monitor/resolution.

In My opinion, maybe a build with the e8400 and depending on monitor, a good graphics card.

    1680x1050 - ati4870 or gtx260

    1920x1080/higher- gtx285 or sli/crossfire...

They should perform well on most (if not all) games at max settings.

FYI:  The motherboard listed under ~$1300 Budget  (AMD)  ( SLI / Crossfire ) appears to no longer be available on Newegg.  I love these guides and used one of your i7 builds for my first self-built comp.  Keep up the great work!

I would rather see a nice monitor with free shipping (and higher res) like ASUS VW192T+ 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor - Retail as part of the tight budget bundle. I still believe this thread should be somehow morphed into a 'wiki'-like structure so various people could contribute and jsv would not have to heed the burden of finding everything alone (especially with how extensive the list is).

I've yet to go through the bundles again, there are definitely a lot of changes in the monitors, etc.

Having an EggWiki would be cool, it would be nicer to have lots of people pitching in.

    Re: jsv35's Budget Builds (Updated 4/14/09) + Core i7

hi, i was looking for some help with a build, since i dont know much about computers.

I was wondering if someone could help me.

Basically i want a computer just to play like steam games, mostly i play cs 1.6, but later on i mighty try out more demanding games. To let you no now if i did play a demanding game or anything like that its not at a high resolution or on high grafics. Mostly if i played i would cut everything down. Highest resolution that i would ever use is 1024x768 in games. So yea basically i need help with a build perferably intel and nvidia. Just trying to upgrade from a super old amd sempron 2600 and 1gb ram.

    Re: jsv35's Budget Picks $$$

    Hi EggXperts!

Man, I can tell you folks are very serious about builds and all you guys on this post are very professional;  This is great.   I just put a post up but not sure if it will get lost in the millions of other posts.

I hope I do not offend anyone, but this area seems to be a place I may be able to source accurate information.  So if you folks do not mind, I am posting this below:

     Thanks a mill:

     **************************************

Hi, first time here and much appreciated if I could get some feedback on upgrading my old system in which a friend help me build in 2005.  Below are all the components bought from Newegg and I highlighted in yellow what I think I could change.

I am in need of more speed after four years, but rather than the tall tower, I need to get a smaller tower for the smaller space to put it in.

I am thinking I would just need a new case (smaller),  new motherboard and cpu as noted in highlighted yellow. (since, I added another 10,000 rpm HD)

Below are specs and like to know if I can upgrade the cpu and mother board.

I believe I can keep my RAM and Hard drives and CD stuff???

Or is it better to just find a unit already built with just OS and go from there?

    Any suggestions?

    Pete

    Hi Jsv,

I'm looking to build my own Gaming PC and I am looking in the 500-600 dollar price range.  I found your builds and basically have one question.  For someone who is not planning on overclock or tweaking specs much and wants a powerful performance would you recommend the AMD or the Intel system at this point?  Please feel free to tell me the benefits of minimal tweaking on either.  I really would be able to make the tweaks, I just have no plans from the get-go to do so.
I appreciate any help anyone could provide, and will let you know how everything goes afterwards.  Thanks so much for keeping this up to date and answering all of our questions.

    Hi nonex1,

I'm not sure what your budget is, but you could more than easily make due with either of the $500 builds on the list here, if you wait a couple days here, I will be updating them though as AMD just released an absolutely fantastic new video card, the HD 4770 that consistently performs better than both the HD4830 and 9800GT and flirts with the HD4850 and GTS250.
