    Root's Eggipedia Idea

    Eggipedia : coined by iPot

The idea of Eggipedia would be a wiki style section of the site, dedicated to the transferring of Knowledge to others. We believe that knowledge should be shared freely to all. Whether it's a How To, an article explaining something what Northbridge/Southbridge Mumbo Jumbo is about, or a current project someone is doing and wants to share their build step by step with pictures.

    Current ideas:

    1. Each article is called an Eggi
    2. Have a tab, next to Blogs, called Eggipedia
    3. The main page of Eggipedia would have a navigation, by categories, on the left. It would also have it's own dedicated search engine at the top. In the middle could be the most recently added Eggi's, similar to Skookum's format.
    4. Each Eggi would have a style/format similar to wiki. An introduction, brief outline of the Eggi (and quick links to those sections) and, if need be, page numbers, depending on the type of Eggi. On the right could be the contributor's to the Eggi and creation/updates/owner information. Bottom would have reference links/reading materials/blogs/threads/posts/etc.
    5. Each Eggi would be owned by the original submitter, and anyone wanting to contribute to it's growth would have to go through the owner--or above him/her through the mods/admins... or maybe sent to the Ubers to be judged by, if the owner denies the modification.
    6. A "Eggi Builder" tool that helps the submitter create Eggi's using the standardized format.
    7. A Modification request tool that helps contributors modify the Eggi and submit modification for review.
    8. Integration from the rest of the site into Eggipedia. Have Stickies in each category with the top 3-4 most popular Eggi's in their respected categories (dynamic).
    9. Digg like rating system to articles (see above idea onto how this helps).
    10. Integration into the blogs... perhaps linking to them from the contributor's section.

Re: Root's Knowledge Transfer Center (KTC) Idea

    root:

Didn't know if this was the right place to post the sticky idea but here it goes...

So I was thinking (yes, another brilliant idea -end sarcasm), a lot of us here are savant in our areas. I like to think I'm very knowledgeable in data storage/backup. But many of us are also searching for knowledge in fields that we are weak in, or just curious about. Myself, I've always thought Power Supplies were a mythical creature (laughs).

Two ideas came to mind when I thought on this:

    1) A place where we could have extensive links that cover all the areas, in detail, for those wanting to gain more knowledge.

    2) A place to get a "mentor" or perhaps a PM buddy for the week, to transfer knowledge or just to have your own Q/A person.

While #2 is probably a stretch I think #1 can be done easily enough. This would require little effort if everyone was involved. I was thinking perhaps a KTC in each thread category. For example: Hardware/Storage would have the following sticky post:

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    Subject: Storage KTC

Welcome to the Storage Knowledge Transfer Center. In this post you will find all the links you will need to become storage savvy!

    • Types of Media
    • Hard Drive - What is it really?
    • Partition
    • MBR
    • RAID
    • Stripe Size/Depth
    • Fundamentals of Backup
    • NAS
    • SAN
    • CAS
    • DAS
    • JBOD
    • SATA
    • PATA (IDE / ATA)
    • ESATA
    • 7.2K vs 10K Drives
    • LUN
    • HBA

    Contributors:

    • root
    • bob
    • joe
    • john
    • sue

    --------------------------------------------------------

Each word list would have a link to a more detailed article (or thread/post) on that topic. Heck, it could even be wiki trash. And maybe have a keyterms section and an FAQ.... and it would probably be wise to list the words in columns.

What do you guys think? I think this would benefit the community greatly, especially for those who would like to learn more about a particular field. Also, we could combine many articles already written (and many sticky's) into one standardized place across the site.

You are brilliant root. I think your idea is excellent. I have a whole lot of questions about power supplys, their readings, etc. I have a Multi Tester but dont know how to actually use it. This would be a great idea and would promote more sales for Newegg. Sometimes we dont venture into things that we arent sure of. I hope they allow this to happen. Good luck Yes

MouthpiecePC heres what you need to know to test PSU.

    How to test/read rails/voltages:

    http://www.driverheaven.net/guides/testingPSU/

    http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?t=137886

Keep in mind that this doesn't show the ability of the PSU to provide the rated amperage to the rails only the voltage and therefore it doesn't prove the PSU is good.

What about looking into using a wiki to format this stuff. I am sure that the newegg tech might be able to get one hooked into this site. That would seem to be a very good format as you can do a nice layout and folks can add to it as well.

Just a thought but a blog would work pretty well too.

    Sasuga Root-san!!

This is fantastic because yes, so many folks on here are such pros in their fields but so far, they've only really had an opportunity to impart their knowledge when someone asks how to tackle a particular problem. Having a resource like this available all the time for ppl to look into themselves is a great idea! (not to mention, when someone asks a question in the forum that someone has written a guide about, you can just link to that w/o having to explain it again and again)

Thank you so much for starting this up, Root. I do hope you make it to Uber! ^^

OHHH. I see what you meant by blog. I was going for a sticky post at the top of every sub-section but I'm really digging the wiki idea.

It being a separate part of the forums though....

    Thoughts people?

    Now if they gave you a forum in geek speek, first listed called;

EggiPedia - were to begin finding answers without asking a single question.

That would get the attention of users well enough for them to read it, instead of having to search for it, not even knowing if it exists.  One of the things I see is far to many making posts asking questions, that could have searched and found them very easily, this would be A great tool for the Egg!

Re: Root's Knowledge Transfer Center (KTC) Idea

What about if instead of linking to another site for resources we began to write our own stuff? I've been collecting links for years, there are great resources out there, but if somebody wants to find links to information already on the web there is something called Google.

I honesty think it is time we began to write our own 'how to" and even better "what not to if you..."

This is a great idea, but if you check your Favorites folder you'll find out plenty of links. It's true that when you google or yahoo something, the technical information it does not come easy, you must dig.

When the knowledge transfer center get implemented it should contain original information, coming from our own knowledge and experience. At first it will have only a few tutorials or guides, but if we keep adding, eventually it will be huge. It doesn't have to be fancy, it should be revise by somebody before being publish, it must contain a disclaimer, in case some newbie messed up following our instructions and murder his machine.

Please don't get mad at me for complicating this matter, I'm thinking about the future, I have always expect Eggxpert.com  to become the best technical source out there, if we don't create original content, that will never happen.

Disclaimer: this is just an idea, the coffee made me do it

    Coffee

@ladytekki, I wholeheartedly agree that we should write out own stuff and, as we grow, we can start replacing many of the links to actual  blogs/posts/HOWTOs/stickies/etc.

    @GMS, great point.

Haha, thanks! I LOL'ed at "Sasuga Root-san!!". I'm glad you are on board! That's exactly what I was thinking (being proactive instead of reactive). How did I miss your post? Hmmm. So could the Powers That Be (PTB) make eggipedia? It would take some cycles from ya'lls part--I don't know what you guys have in the works so I don't know if this is feasible. Wikipedia styled, structured by sections, thats filled with answers! And it's own dedicated search engine!

@All, until then (Eggipedia), let's keep the links coming. We have to start somewhere right?
