EggXpert

This is an idea i had like 2 sec ago.  What if Eggxpert were to incorporate its own IRC channel.  Just for talking, not for helping people with.  I have seen other forums with this in the past and thought it would be neat for here.

You know, just something to keep us busy doing something while waiting for a question to come.  

Just a thought.

Cool idea though, would make it a lot faster to help people if it was real time. 

Yea, maybe even have a feature to let you have a real-time update of the IRC into the thread so others can see the problem/solution in the future.

The reason i say this is because i have seen some people ask if they can do like a MSN chat to get things going fastter.

And I always wanted an official Vent server...

But the problem is moderating these new forms of media. I'm sure Eggxpert doesn't have the manpower (yet?).

O.o vent could be good too.  But not everybody has a mic. 

As for the administration, isnt that where the Ubers could step in?  Maybe just having a couple of swearword bots step in?

Uber's aren't like moderators, they are just people elected by the people who are respected/helpful/blah/blah/blah.

Moderators (until recently with Sid and Volfann) are employees. Since this would be sponsored by eggxpert (unless it was the official unoffical IRC/VENT) they would have to moderate it.

At least, that's my take on it.

Well i didnt mean full moderators.  What i meant was, give ubers the ability to kick people out for x amount of time. 

So that keeps site mods to employees + sid and volfann can kick and ban people and then just give the 10 ubers the ability to kick for x amount of time.

No I understood what you had meant. I'm saying that for any type of new media to be sponsored by Eggxpert (whether it IRC or Vent) there would have to be some moderator that's hired by Eggxpert, who represents the company, not someone elected by the people.

On this site, the Ubers help moderate but in reality, the moderators/admins moderate the Ubers as well.

I like it!! There's already a chat with NewEgg for Support on the NewEgg site.. Why not a chat room for all eggXperts? It'd be fun.. Not sure how productive, but it'd be fun.. hehe..
 

aaahhhh, checks and balances. 

What if they appointed a few admins to watch the IRC/Vent and if they sign off, it closes until another admin logs in.  That way, things cant get too out of hand.

Or an alternative is like what you said.  Make an 'unofficial one' and maybe just stick a note for when they first log in saying 'This IRC channel is not affiliated with newegg.com or any of its partners/branches'

haha.. You make it sound like us Uber's need to be babysat.. Really, we don't.. Although there is the occasional situation where we get ourselves into a heap load of trouble and then call on admins/mods to help bail us out.. Other than that, they don't really moderate or control us at all..  We pretty much follow the rules just like everybody else and everything just falls into place.. Most of the time, we consult other Uber's before acting..

Edit: In other words, the EggXpert community does a great job of picking people who will be great Ubers..

Eh. Fingers itched when I saw this, so last post--I swear.

I didn't mean that they mod/controlled you guys, just that they are there and present. In the rare occasion that an Uber goes out of line, there are checks and balances in place. In something as realtime as IRC or Vent, I just think that it'd be better, in the long run, for Eggxpert to had a moderator (who is hired by Eggxpert) to be present.

Wo... kunzy, excellent idea.  I myself am an avid user of IRC and I think the idea is an excellent way to keep the community alive while they're not logged into the forums.  What's the next step and what can I do to help?

And for a quick .02 cents, if the irc channel is created, I don't believe we'd be allowed to register #eggxpert since I'm sure the name is trademark.  Either way, for it to be named so might involve a staff member of newegg to register the channel name.  (This comes from my experience on GameSurge and EFnet)

I think that having it named #eggxpert would be the best thing to do, because everyone likes an official place to belong to, as opposed to #eggxpertclub, or w/e.  The eggxpert.com website could have a link to the chat session via a java applet, and IRC client users (i.e. mIRC) could log on however they'd like.

As for arsonic, the next step is to see what the mods/admins think about the idea and for them to decide whether or not they would like to support it.  If they dont, we could have an unofficial one and i would like you to take care of that.  I dont know a thing about creating an IRC and i dont have a server to use.

Excellent!  I'd like to hear an admin's take on this.  I took the liberty of registering the channel #eggxpert on the GameSurge network, and it's registered as, "a community chat for eggxpert.com forum members".  I did so in order to quickly reserve the name, just in case the idea got out and someone wanted to take it.  Of course, anything is open in the air.  If the staff has an issue with this, or likes the idea and wants to be fully involved, I'm all eyes!  I know that the staff is busy with their new project, we are very patient.

In case anyone is interested in joining for now, you can connect to the chat channel by using the mIRC chat client, connecting to the GameSurge server, and joining the #eggxpert channel.  Again, lot's can be discussed as far as who is entitled to owning the channel, and who should be able to moderate it, speak in it, etc.  For now, the channel is official registered on the GameSurge network.

And one last thing, I wanted to reiterate the idea of allowing eggxpert forum members to connect to the channel via a java applet on the forum's home page, or other forum page.  I think it's a great idea.
