After reading the reviews on newegg then glancing over at the portion claiming technical level is high it's a wonder why they don't make you prove it. There should be a short 5 question test you must pass in order to select that option.

I don't think those in the know put much faith in those reviews anyway. The ones for PSUs are kinda funny to read though as I think you could take a turd and chrome plate it and put flashy lights on it and it would get great reviews.

Newegg reviews are a joke on many other enthusiast forums.

This is actually an area where Newegg could improve on its hard to improve web presence.

 You are not alone.. sometimes I read the reviews and chuckle to myself. The person says they have a high understanings of the product, then prove they have no clue what they are talking about in thier review.

Sometimes thier information is so out-of-wack with reality that I feel compelled to write a contridictory review.. just so people dont beleive what they are saying...

Like some guy though that the X1650Pro he bought was mislabled, and gave it one egg ,becuase his memory clock only showed 400MHz, and on the box it said DDR2 800MHz... lol.. he didnt realize that with DDR2 you have to multiply it by 2 to get the effective memory... idiots, lol

I agree with lowboy.. the PSU reviews are some of the funniest.... the person says they have a high tech level, then write a bad review for the $14 500w PSU they bought for their overclocked Q6600, 8800GTS system... and they are actually outraged that the PSU blow up ,lol

Generally the only thing I look for in the reviews is if there is a high failure/return rate.  While the product may be good this is usually a good sign that there is some issues as most items all have 5 eggs going on about how fast they got it and such.  I could care less about the speed of the delivery in a review I want to know how or what features something has.  I have not left very many reviews but I don't go into anything about NewEgg or shipping just how the product works for me and any issues that it has or could have.  Plus I will generally wait until I have had it about a month or more so I can give a real tested description, not some first impression on the day I get it or the people the leave reviews and have don't even have the item.

agreed.  Reviews on the egg, like anywhere need to be taken with a grain of salt.  If there's no explanation for a bad review, then it is a worthless review to me.

wheew!  I know the feeling.  Like the mentioned memory reviewer who was not educated on how the product is supposed to perform.  Obvious reviews like that should be rejected and the reviewer contacted by e-mail and informed of his/her error.

I agree something needs to be done. The more silly reviews on my opinion are on OEM products and especially video cards or capture cards with TV turner. Some of those high technology experts, complain about the performance of the product in a way, that proves they never heard of manufacturer’s websites, drivers or download updates, I guess they don’t even know what is the difference between OEM and retail.

I only read those reviews in passing.  And I do my best to see if the poster gives facts or just feelings and opinions before I consider them twords a purchase.

Only 2 things are ever useful to me from User Reviews:  Compatibility issues (and sometimes those can be questionable) and general Good vs. Bad stats (if there are many, many reviews anyway).

I just think it's to be expected and I prefer to go to dedicated review sites instead. 

I don't recall ever not seeing a tech level high.

I've seen bad reviews complimenting NewEgg. Maybe it's just the screening processs? I saw that reviews mentioning other reviews weren't allow but I've seen them. I've seen reviews mentioning stuff they aren't suppost to and so maybe if you compliment NewEgg you can put anything you want in the review?

 

In flash drives I checked reviews for drives that fell apart. I noticed a few that looked like my mom's, hers is coming apart, and I checked, the ones on the site and hers were the same brand, and the reviews mentioned that they weren't well secured. Maybe the reviews are usefull for some info.

 

How about these...

1. Do you have a computer?

2. Can you find your computer?

3. Do you know how to turn it on?

4. Can you find Windows?

5. Can you operate a mouse?

I probably should ask on a different page, but i saw the comment about the 500 watt power supply.

Shouldn't the light coming out of a 500 watt power supply be pretty bright?
Mine must be burned out or something...there's no light at all. Otherwise, I like it a lot.

Here's an idea...  Whenever someone selects Level High they must answer a Technical Challenge Question.  As long as they "try" to answer the question they can post using the high tech level -- even if they get the answer wrong.   However, if they don't want to even try to answer the question they can't post at the level high.

The idea is to give people a benchmark for self-assessment...

I must agree. Unlike almost everyone, my tech level is only average. Average must be pretty high compared to the DOA comments where they were foolish enough to fry a power supply with a big static charge and then blame the power supply. I am no expert but I won't open my home built PC without wearing a static wrist strap. Yes even at my average level I make sure it is clipped to the case frame as soon as the first cover is off.

Do you know what Crypto is, well that's what Cryptix stands for... lol, and are you a "haxor, or craxor?" In other words, are you a good witch, or a bad witch? 

I have read reviews on some items from people with a high tech level. 

'Got this new hard drive hooked up and the BIOS sees it but not windows' (something like that)

He gave it a one egg and i just wish i could reach out and slap the fella.  At the very least you aught to be able to write to them through newegg and tell them how to do it.  Oh wait, its called eggxpert.  Maybe they should recommend going to Eggxpert.com when they get an RMA number.

I think we should just be able to rate the "commenter" on a -5 to +5 scale. How big of an stooge are they poll... that guy would get a -2.

Thanks for your feedback all!  This topic has actually been in discussion for quite sometime now.  Im not in any position to say when the changes will come... but expect some MAJOR changes in the future.  I think you all will be VERY happy with what we have planned.  Just give us time!!!!  ;)

My first troubleshooting experience was when my system wouldn't boot after i erased io.sys and dos.sys from my single floppy system because they were taking too much room.  (this was Cp/m not msdos)

sometimes experience is necessary to attain a higher tech level.
