Help with boosting my computer performance please?

Below are my current computer's configs. and I'm trying to figure out what upgrade (and cost) it would give the biggest oompf to my performance (for gaming mainly)

Alright, so recently I felt my PC would boot up slower than usual. Getting the apps/sidebar stuff in vista done was longer than usual. Starting apps/game was to. So took a look at CPU-Z, and saw my core speed fluctuating alot and dropping rly low in speed. Looked at RealTemp to see if my temps were High but they were actually lower or the same as usual. What could it be?

Look over an AMD PII X4 build please?

Hey I was wondering if someone could look over a build I was going to buy/ask for some parts for Christmas. I haven't built a computer up from scratch, but did some pretty intensive upgrading on a PC I bought last year, and after running into/solving a lot of problems, I think I'm ready to build my own.

It's going to be a multipurpose computer, with the ability to allow me to play every game that comes out over the next few years. I needed to upgrade because my old processor can't handle RE5, L4D2, Assassin's Creed II, Prince of Persia. I also plan on trying to get Dolphin running at playable speeds (for some games). I already own some of the components, as listed below:

Already owned:
- Antec Sonata III (got on sail for ~$70 a few years back)
- Nvidia 8600 GT (512mb) (planning on upgrading to maybe Nvidia 340 when they come out next year)
- 19" Soyo monitor
- 500W EarthWatts PSU
- Sony B1000 Speakers, Technics Preamp, Senn HD280Pro headphones, Grado SR80 headphones
- 19" Soyo monitor

I'm still unsure of the CD/DVD drive, I want one that has the ability to rip GC and Wii games like the LG 816* series, but don't want to overpay for a used drive. I just need to wait until I find a good deal on one of the 816*s or a compatible drive.

I wasn't originally planning on overclocking, but after reading how much potential the phenom II has, it seems like it'd be a shame not to. I hope to achieve speeds somewhere around 3.8Ghz+. I think the cooling system on the list is a decent one, and other people have gotten the Mugen 2 to fit inside a Sonata III, so I think I'll be fine.

The only thing I'm not that sure of is the mobo. I picked it out based on customer ratings and compatibility, plus wanted one that could handle 1600 DDR3 ram.

I also plan on getting a PII 965 instead of 955 if I see it on sale, and would change out the ram if I see some similar DDR3 on sale.

If you think that something about this list is incorrect, or something is missing that should be there, feel free to post that information in this thread. WHICH ONES TO BUY ?

Tier 1 provides the best quality power, great for overclocking and super high-end systems.
Tier 2 offers almost as good power and stability as Tier 1 at comparable wattage levels with lower price/better availability.
Tier T offers the high quality components of Tier 2 with slightly less rail stability due to Topower internals.
Tier3 is ONLY recommended if price difference is present between Tier 3 andTier 2 or due to availability issues with Tier 1/2 PSUs.

It's simple, I will say a word/name/short phrase, and the next poster follows up with whatever word/name/short phrase comes to mind.

Computer is not starting at all

Hello.

Not sure how important system specs are because my computer simply is not starting at all - turned it off this morning, when I got home, nothing. Nothing nothing nothing. I push the button, and nothing turns on. Tried a different power chord, tried different outlets, made sure everything was connected properly inside that I could see... nothing. I take good care of my computer, though it is a bit dusty..

So my question is:

What now?

Possible issues? Could the power button just be broken? The PSU? What else? I have no idea, and am lost.

Should I bring it to a local shop to see if they can test these things (maybe switch in a different PSU?)

The only thing different was that I recently put in a new video card ordered off of Newegg.. but it was running GREAT until this issue.

Computer is like 4 years old, no more warranty.

Obviously I would love advice on a new computer if the sitution comes down to that... ;)

Windows 7 64 bit won't install help please!!

This one is driving me nuts, first here are the basic specs of the system I'm trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit version on:

Core 2 Extreme QX9650

Gigabyte GA-X48T-DQ6

Patriot Viper 4GB DDR3 1800 Dual Channel Kit

Gigabyte GV-R4870X2 Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB video card

Zalman 850W PSU

1 WD 320GB Raptor HD

1 WD 640GB HD

Now the problem, I had been running Vista Ultimate on the above system and I built a new system which I put Windows 7 64 bit on and I liked it well enough to spring for another copy of Windows 7 64 bit version. I backed up all my files on an external HD and put it off to the side for safe keeping. Then I proceeded to install the new OS by wiping everything out to get a fresh clean install. Everything was moving along fine until it got to the point where it was finishing up the installation where it seemed to hang for a long time but it finally did restart but from there it should have taken me to the screens for the key code and my info but all I got was a black screen yet my cursor was there and I could move it around. I waited a bit and nothing happened which was a far cry from how easily it installed on my brand new build. I restarted it and it took me to the screen where you can choose to start windows in safe mode or normal. It only went so far then stopped. I thought maybe I had a bad disc so I got out my new computers Windows disc to see if it would install and I figured if it did I had a bad disc but it did the same thing as the disc I had tried first. Here's the killer I went back to my Vista disc and the darn thing installed like there was nothing to it. Is it possible I have a hardware problem, I'm stumped on this one.

Any idea what the devil is going on with my slightly older system? Oh yea I even tried changing all my settings to the defaults except for the boot sequence.

I've posted the problem on several other forums but haven't had much of a response.

NZXT - Has anyone had a bad experience?

They're ranked pretty low on the Tier list that is sticky'd here, but I'm wondering why?

I really appreciate that they're trying to be a quiet company, I'm so tired of lazy companies selling noisy fans.

I just installed another 2gb of RAM in my machine and my gigabyte ep45-ud3r is not recognizing the proper memory frequency. The parts I have are as follows:

The memory that was already there is:

Even though all chips are 800 MHz the bios shows all of them clocked at 667 MHz. According to CPU-z the Kingston chips are showing up as 667 MHz. I'm completely stumped, any help is appreciated.

Please don't mistake this for a rant, I'm just seeking an answer.
I noticed that the Kandalf LCS case by thermaltake has been deactivated, does anyone know why this is? was there a design flaw? is a new model being released soon? or is there a reason that I am apparently missing? Thanks for the help.

Big PSU, need a new case

Right now I have a PC Power and Cooling 750 in my Antec P180 case. The PSU is too large for the case and does not allow me to have my lower case fan in. This also makes 4 out of my 7 3.5" bays unusable due to the absence of cooling over the HDDs. I was looking into new cases such as the Antec nine-hundred or the Cooler-Master sniper.

Does anyone out there have a PC P&C PSU or any other larger PSU that has a case that actually works for them? I'm looking for a case that will work with running SLi and an Intel processor with a large heatsink.

Hi guys and gals,

Long post... but I figured I would be as detailed as I could.

Here is the deal. Dear friends of my wife and I have asked me to put together a system for them. They are God Parents to one of my children and we have known them for years and years.. so I want to do right by them and put together a nice system.

A bit of backround:

Their current PC caught a virus and it basically wiped out the HDD. It is an old, dated, Dell P4 system and was pretty slow for their needs as it was. So, instead of buying a new HDD and OS, they decided it was about time to upgrade.

Her: She is an avid Photographer . She uses programs like PhotoShop and such in her hobby. She was a semi-Professional at one time, but now it is mostly a hobby. She does do occasional weddings and portraits for close friends.

Him: Avid Ebay'er. One of those guys who has a basement full of collectible stuff that he sells online. He is also a casual gamer. He plays games such as Civilization (RTS games) and games such a Medal of Honor (FPS games). Now he hasn't really bought anything recent, he pretty much stays with the older games. I think this may be due to the lacking power of his old system and I think if he had more power "under the hood" then he would be more apt to look into more recent titles.

They also have two children, both boys, who like to game on consoles (PS3).. I believe they may be inclined to game on the PC if it was a bit more robust then what they had.

The low-down:

I'm thinking, because of her use of PhotoShop and his propensity to games, that we should try for at least a triple-core CPU. (do you agree?) They will not over-clock, I do know that. So, that does not even need to be a consideration.

I want to try for 4 GB of ram (again, her use of memory intensive programs).

HDD is up in the air. She told me she uses an external HDD for her photo storage, so I don't think any mega-TB drive(s) are needed.

I would like to fit in a dedicated GPU in this build. I really don't know if a SLI or CrossFire motherboard is needed, as I do not think he is that "Hard-Core" with gaming. If you can fit one, then that would be a plus, but it is not a necessity. His current monitor is not large, I believe it is 19" or 20" LCD.. so high resolution is not a concern for performance requirements.

They will be reusing their Monitor, keyboard and mouse. So I am looking for a tower only.

Now, I don't know if their keyboard and mouse are USB or PS/2 types. So I do not know if the motherboard should include two PS/2 ports or not. If not, then I believe I have a couple of PS/2 to USB adapters laying around... but I figured I would throw that out there for consideration.

They will need an OS. I'm thinking a 64-bit operating system so they can utilize higher memory amounts. Is there any issues that are known using 64-bit with programs such as PhotoShop?

Case: Nothing to flashy. Just a good "work horse" case. If it has a bit of flash (led fans and such), that is fine as long as the cost/performance merit it.

Now, I do have my older ATI X1950Pro that was only used for only about a year and a half. It was never overclocked and it is in "like new" condition. It is just sitting in the box on a shelf and I do not need it any more. This would be miles ahead of the graphics power they had before. So, I am toying with the idea of giving them that card so money can be better utilized on other parts.

Budget:

She would like to keep it at $600 (with shipping included to Zip Code 06512) or under.

I think I would like two builds. One that includes a dedicated GPU and one that does not ...this system would use my old X1950Pro.

I know that I've put together many systems on these forums for other people over the years and you may be asking yourself "why is he asking for help?". Well, I will be working on this myself later today, to be sure. But, I respect many of the knowledgeable people on here and would like to see what they come up with. I like seeing other people's input, as I would liken it to "Thinking outside of the box". Sometimes builders get into a certain frame of mind when putting together systems and get "Tunnel Vision" (brand loyalties and such). Since this system will be for people I truly care for, I want to make it the best that I , and you, can.

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

Need a 2" long IDE hard drive cable ...

Hello ... I have broken the hard drive cable in my 3.5" external hard drive enclosure. It's a standard 40 pin 80 conductor IDE flat ribbon cable, but it's only 2" long -- and that's the problem. I have spent hours now trying to find a replacement, and the best I could come up with was buying the tools and connectors to make one myself. This should not be so hard to find. Many, many external hard drive enclosures have used these short cables -- they break easy when you pull them off the drive -- so they should be readily available. I checked with Cooler Master, who made mine, and they referred me to three online vendors who they said "should" have them ... and they don't.

So if anyone knows where I can find one of these, please let me know (I'm going to buy several). Any length between 1.75" and 3" ought to be good enough.
