    600,000+ Macs infected with virus

    CNet:

The company -- Dr. Web -- originally reported today that 550,000 Macintosh computers were infected by the growing Mac botnet. But later in the day, Dr. Web malware analyst Sorokin Ivan announced on Twitter that the number of Macs infected with Flashback had increased to 600,000, with 274 of those based in Cupertino, Calif.

So much for people thinking Macs don't get viruses.

I read a similar article on yahoo news and it stated that Apple had patched the problem.  The first thing I did was a software update on my Macbook Pro this afternoon. I guess if I start getting a bunch or random charges on my credit/debit cards I will know why!

Re: 600,000+ Macs infected with virus

Does anyone else see the link between the new wave of software vendors producing Mac compatible antiviruses and the sudden emergence of the "Mac virus"? Sounds like good marketing to me. Who needs an antivirus when there are no viruses to speak of? How does a mass consumer group like the "Macaholics" become naive enough in their little "bubble world" to not realize that a complex operating system like OSX is incapable of executing malicious software? Beware Android enthusiasts, theres a surge of antiviruses coming your way as well and I'll bet that sales are through the roof.

Hmmmmm.....certainly does seem like someone starting a fire & then yelling "FIRE"!  Now that the general public is aware that MAC's are not virus-proof & Apple can not count on that misconception as a selling point, perhaps they will produce a free anti-virus like MS did with Security Essentials.  This would definitely quiet the out burst of MAC anti-virus vendors & at the same time give Apple a save way to quickly support its user base in the future. But then again, Apple never really gives anything away for FREE...

    ...boo :)

Well the more popular the Apple becomes the more it will get infected do the math. Its simple  Apple whats the yuppy's that have nothing better to do then "use something easy" god for bid of they use Windows or Linux. Yes lets charge 800 more for RAM then really needed yes lets charge over 1000 more for a notebook that has the same spcts as a PC.So yes let Apple users get a taste of the dark side nothing wrong with it lets see how they can handle getting a virus or more. This is why I am Linux not a sheep such as Apple users.

I had this argument a few months ago when a friend bought a Mac Mini. A person wrote on his Facebook welcome to a computer without virus's. I disproved his theory. I have noticed there are company's marketing to mac's and Android for A\V software. It makes me laugh.

Re: 600,000+ Macs infected with virus

OK, champ, I'll bite: how did you disprove his "theory" that Macs don't get viruses?

You *do* realize that a trojan is not the same thing as a virus, right?

Did you even read the original article?

I suppose there is nothing wrong with exercising caution and installing a free malware application, but to be very clear, this was a java and/or flash exploit - neither of which come installed on a Mac.

For the record, I use all sorts of hardware/software combinations, but I clearly have a preference - which is based on actual *experience* instead of a bunch of ignorant assumptions - I'm looking right at you, Tracer76. By the way, someone who has a bunch of brands scrolling and flashing in their signature should really think twice about branding others as "sheep."

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a preference, but to say something like, "yet another reazon to not get a mac!! lol lol" reeks of terrible ignorance (never mind the cruel assault perpetrated on the english language!). Just admit you wouldn't get one *anyway*. And if you know nothing about particular hardware, it probably is best to keep your mouth shut.

Viruses and trojans can both be devastating forms of malware. You're really not arguing anything but semantics.

AnthonyP for someone who likes to point out about others on here. Fist of all English is capitalized therefor not a lower case "e". Second as for brands at least I can pick my own unlike Apple users. Third I have more experience in the Technical industry then a person like you.  For one when you build your own PC which we know you have not, a person can pick and choose hardware and what OS they want to install. Where a person that purchased a MAC has to have full Intel integration, select graphics cards, slect audio cards, ect.. So yes that is sheep.

    Me too. LOL :)

This is interesting but I see some marketing behind this as well, but also some good. People are very naive when it comes to computers, internet, and everything else that goes a long with them. For many computer users, they don't understand the implications of spreading themselves out on the internet on social-networking sites, or clicking on every link that's sent their way.

In my opinion, these pseudo updates are not Trojan Horses. These are just plain malware installed by some means. A Trojan Horse is more of a self-inflicted malware infection, meaning the person has to install it themselves, thinking the application is something that's legitimate. On the Macintosh this maybe the case with how the base Unix/Linux operating system works, so the user has to go through great lengths to install an application, or at least it should be that way. Apple has modified the underlying Unix security levels to allow applets to install around the guards. This is a dis-service to the user and goes against the great security levels that the 'Nix operating systems have.

What do I mean by this also doing something good? It makes people aware, or at least those, that support these platforms, that there is in fact malware that is capable of entering into the system. From what I've read the 'Nix operating systems have always had vulnerabilities, and lots of them. We have to remember that the Apple platform was never as popular as Windows, so it was not profitable to write any malware for the the operating system because of the extra work needed to get past the security. Now with today's script-writing tools, this can be handled much faster and easier, and with the Apple becoming more and more popular, this makes it more of an open challenge for malware writes to attack.

Mac can get a virus and that could be why there is a rise in anti virus software. Not necessarily a marketing plan.
