Re: Microsoft Unveils Windows 8
What will be interesting is whether there are any genuine enhancements offered by Win8. I get the fact that MS is shooting for smartphone and tablet OS and they predict this is where people are going. They may be correct. Or they may end up with an OS for smartphones and tablets. I kind of like the tile retro look. Reminds me of the DOS GUI shells some of those shareware writers created. You don't think they are trying to make this easier for Steve to use do you? ;-)
I'm guessing it will be 64bit Win7 SP4 with a new interface (cynical me); though it is supposed to share Win Serv 2012 code so we will see. Even so, I am sure there are registry settings that will return it to any prior NT based OS' look to a point. Alright, since it is almost finished releases I know it will be as they say, and on time. But cynical me, I keep thinking of all those deadlines that come and go and then they finally wheel out some *** code missing all the good stuff and having all the bad stuff.

Re: Microsoft Unveils Windows 8
OK, Windows Love Monkey (who's blog is however well worth reading) Paul Thurrott makes the case that Win8 would make a good home server. And frankly, if you can change a setting and get the more dignified WS12 tile screen, he has a point.

Re: Microsoft Unveils Windows 8
There is way too much concern because they are supporting touch. It's not a loss to those that don't have touch gear nor less of an incentive. Mice and keyboards still do what they always did. MSoft is reducing the Skew count by a LOT. This I think it is better. The under the covers issue with Windows 7 are starting to get to be it's problems. Vista was the worst and Win 7 cleaned up a lot and Win 8 continues the trend. I think users will find less to complain about than the fact that it does not look like WinXP.
There hasn't been a killer app since social networks and some of us have to swallow to handle that part. New hardware and brighter better screens with high Internet bandwifth now allow better looking stuff and you don't need to have ever play a game to enjoy it. The better looking UI has always been a factor. Once you leave the Metro style apps you get back to more like you already know but even that has a few new curves to make it snappier.
Networking currently is not as easy as it should be yet more important than ever. Most people need multiple networks to tie various devices to many different end points. I don 't see that task as trivial.

Re: Microsoft Unveils Windows 8
If you look at the advances of touch screens and eventually how they can make computing easier for the average Joe. Win8 is a "step" in the right direction. Imagine everything being visual and shown on a screen - reports manipulation, garage door openers, schools, alarms settings, network redirect, chemical creations, book editing, engineering, construction, games, voting, math analysis, navigation, sales, hospital chart comparisons, phone, presentations, GPS, TV, etc... The only caveat is dirty fingers.
Yes, it may take a few generations for MS to get touch screen up to its usually 95% accuracy, but if nothing comes along better than touch screen (voice, or holograms), it would be great to have ONE computer that could communicate in all aspects of our demanding communication lives.

Re: Microsoft Unveils Windows 8
Pass. I forced myself to use Windows 8 for a while. The dev preview was not so bad because you could disable metro. Consumer Preview made me want to punch my monitor. Metro is god awful. Even on touch. The design hues are reminiscent of my mother's 1970's Avocado Green painted kitchen. The large tiles take up too much valuable screen space. Also where's Aero? My husband uses a mac and the only thing he envies about windows is Aero. .

Re: Microsoft Unveils Windows 8
I am glad you tried it out. Not surprised you don't like the interface. But I must admit I have had a change of heart. There is some real substance in Win8 and at this point that substance is almost certainly going to be included, unlike the great things in Longhorn that were chucked when the disastrous Vista was finally rolled out. I am also pleased at the one size fits all 64bit only Win8 Pro OS instead of a bunch of flavors and upgrade options. And the $40 price assuming it comes out on time meets my worth maybe $30 per license with inflation and savoring Bill's undoubted cataplexy.

Re: Microsoft Unveils Windows 8
Windows 8 is a piece of meat. It boots fast but half of it is inoperative. In my opinion, they removed the best parts of the system and traded them for a bunch of colorful graphics. If I wanted something that operated like a smartphone or a tablet, I'd use my phone or a tablet. No thanks....

Agreed. I put it on my backup laptop to play around with but it's just too painful. Not having a touch screen makes me feel like an amputee would with a regular keyboard. I really hope they include an option to just ignore all of that c**p and just have my normal desktop. If not I'll be keeping W7 till 9 comes out.

Re: Microsoft Unveils Windows 8
I was YouTubing a couple of "My dad/grandma uses Windows 8 Consumer Preview" vids the other day, and it was sort of like the Project Mojave commercials in reverse. Vista had a lot of issues that most non-technical types never really understood or would have cared about. They largely avoided it because technical people said it was the devil. Windows 8 on the other hand, has some in-your-face "must be this 1337 to ride" exclusionism of a variety that's normally reserved for Apple commercials. Nobody wants to be made fun of while they're trying to do spreadsheets, Steve.

Re: Microsoft Unveils Windows 8
Better look out for problems, there is major bugs to be worked out before release and it is late in the developement of windows 8. I just downloaded windows 8 pro x64 RTM (Release to Manafacturers) 2 days ago and Microsoft and myself neither can get the thing installed on one of my computers.
The computer in question is a new build with an MSI 760GM-P23 (FX) MOBO and it is very appearent to me that something about the MOBO that windows 8 pro x64 RTM does not like.
Microsoft blaims me for being unknowlegable in installing windows OS to do it correctly, so I finally gave up and installed windows 7 pro x64 and everything went exactly as expected. The computer is running windows 7 pro.

Re: Microsoft Unveils Windows 8
I've been running Windows 8 x64 RTM, activated, for about a month and I still find it to busy and a step backwards. For those whom want touch apps, it's great but for those of us that just want a good OS that's reliable and doesn't drag our performance down, I think Windows 8 sucks. It's far to busy at log in. You get a screen and then double click on it to take it away and then you have the log in screen and after that you get the MUI screen with "all" the touch app stuff I presume and finally I click on the desktop MUI and I'm finally in. What a waste of time and performance. The start button is also gone, whcih allowed us to access so many things conviently, and now you have to point the cursor to the top or bottom right to access stuff or the bottom lefthand corner to take you back to the MUI screen and then figure out what you need or point the cursor again to the top or bottom right side corner for another bunch of options. See what I mean on how busy this is and a total waste of my time when the start button allowed me singular access to everything I needed to get to without having to keep fishing around. The recycle bin app is more like XP as well when you open a file to view. You have to dicker around to find the appropiate settings to view instead of the simple options in Windows 7. It does seem to be a bit quicker in responce but overall, I, in my opinion, do not like this new OS. as they sure had it right with Windows 7 and should of just kept as simple as Windows 7. The log in is just a pain to get to my desktop and also the other methods to get to the other apps when I get to my desktop. They should of just, in my opinion, put that MUI option somewhere else that could of been accessed from the start button. The only thing, that I heard from the grapevine, is that M$ will be offering a decent price upgrade to 8 for $40 for those of us that didn't purchase our systems June/2012 or later on this year. On or around Oct 26/2012, is when M$ is supposed to be offering this upgrade but what I can't understand is why are they charging $14.99 for the upgrade for those whom had made thier purchase from June/2012 and on?? It should be free as it was from Vista to Windows 7. Or maybe the manufactors, HP,Asus, ..., will be offering the free upgrade. M$ did get this right for the price of the upgrade if this is true.

Re: Microsoft Unveils Windows 8
Un Stable.!!!!!! c**p but It is the best worthless OS I ever tested! Blue screen of death 3 times so far! Nuked my HDD! How? Ever time it goes into hibernation locks up OS. forces me to do a hard reboot (pull the plug) Windows 8 goes into a system repair loop! Jacks with the HDD partition and unable to reload Windows 8 OS Fix Pull HDD Put HDD in my external HDD enclosure. Open with a 2 computer and remove partitions and format HDD Then load Windows 8 Fix Changed sleep/hibernate to never. but If I remember right this is the same problem I saw on Windows 7 pre release. So I can only hope Windows build version will come out without the bug. My opinion Easy Easy to use Good graphics, A little more clicking to get to where Windows 7 is but graphics make up for the short fall. Pull HDD Put HDD in my external HDD enclouse. Re: Micrsoft unveils Windows 8
In Windows 8, like Windows 7, you can search by simply tapping the Windows key, then type your search. It searches the start menu, installed programs, your documents folders and other indexed locations, in that order. From any Windows Explorer window in 7, you can type in the search box and it does a search from the current location. If it is an indexed location, the searches are extremely fast. Otherwise they're slow. Once the search is complete, you can run the search again looking for text inside the files, not just the filenames. You can also use filters like "Date:10/20/2012" or other properties of the files. It's like XP with Windows search installed, grown up, then on steroids. Probably the most undervalued addition to Windows 7. My understanding about 8 is that it retains that search from the start button. Hit start or click it and start typing and it dynamically searches. Reducing mouse usage for those of us who are not on touchscreens. Oh, and touchscreen in Windows 7 is pretty decent. The wife has an HP Touchsmart and while we used it, it was great. We later turned touchscreen off because bugs were interrupting our nighttime video watching by landing on the screen. Windows Explorer has a tile mode that is very useful, and you can enable tick boxes on each Icon which allow you to selectively choose items for operations. I'm sure businesses will be given an option that removes the touch-screen optimization and still allows all the mouse/keyboard functionality, plus all the Win+ key combos. Microsoft never throws anything away. Ctrl+esc still duplicates the Windows key and Alt+F4 still closes the current window. I cannot think of any keyboard shortcut, or key+mouse shortcut that has been removed. So, though I haven't gone past the start screen (just start menu writ large, btw) features, I'm sure the core Windows functionality is still there. And MS knows where its bread is buttered. Government and business are still their primary focus, since they buy licenses in bulk. Office 2007 taught them how hard it is to get that segment to change. Hopefully it has taught the customers that MS actually does know a bit about interface design. The main problem with Vista was that it launched without signed drivers and without all the hardware folks on-board. The VIsta systems I ran here in my house worked without flaws in the OS until I upgraded them to Windows 7. I am a Windows sysadmin. I also enjoy PC gaming in my off time. I am not Microsoft's biggest fan. I know the system is far from perfect, but Windows search is better than ever and the tiles on the start screen will not be forced on folks that do not use touch-screen. If I'm wrong, I will be the first in line to revert to Windows 7.

I wonder if it is worth the upgrade for people who are not using touch screens. I am using Windows 7 right now and it seems fine.

Re: Micrsoft unveils Windows 8
Wow, interesting pros and cons, but the bottom line is the bottom line. First of all I like Microsoft. BUT, they are entering into a market where they are not First! Androd and Mac will continue to beat the h*ll out of Microsoft. Most tablet have the ability to work as a cell phone and for less than $100. The only advantage that win8 offers is communication between devices, which can be done on any internet appliance (given the knowledge). So why would I spend $500 on a surface tablet, $800 on a MS phone and $900 on a desktop. Oh an constantly fight hackers, crackers, whackers and attackers.
At this point MS is third to android and Mac in the touch screen market. As a stock holder of microsoft, the largest software company in the world, that after a all this time and money spent all they came up with is a touch screen??!! Right now, arm cpu's are the largest selling cpu's on the market, bigger than intel and amd and now MS has become the linux of the OS market.
Time to step up into the 21st century with an interface that does not make you carry a wet nap.

Re: Microsoft Unveils Windows 8
I mean Microsoft and Apple I love you both but Microsoft should learn from Apple's approach to an OS with added mobile device looking features. First off, don't remove my favorite feature! What feature did they remove you may ask. The start menu! It's unofficial (I think). I saw it in a beta test. That is like Apple removing the dock entirely! Also, don't force the features in. In Lion and Mountain Lion I can choose if I want those features! With Metro you have to go through it before actually getting to what you want and it's not very innovative. With launchpad on my Mac I don't have to use it! In fact I rarely do. Also, on Mac I can turn notification center off. That is just my views. What I really mean is I don't want another Vista! I know a lot of people have been saying this and Microsoft will probably listen and may change it. One thing I love is the starting screen is beautiful! Maybe it can just be a screen saver though. Just as a side note, I have not intention of starting a flame war and I love both systems equally.

I agree with you! They are trying to compete with Apple's integration of mobile OS. This is more forced because they are desperate. Like when you hear a kid's poem with forced rhyme. It doesn't really flow and sounds awkward. Metro and the mobile approach don't really flow and were heavily forced. Also they force you to use it. With Apple's it is integrated lightly and in a "flowing" manner. At the same time it isn't forced like metro. All in all this is just Microsoft forcing itself into the market and failing. Here is something I wrote about it a few minutes ago. djkrazy2000: I mean Microsoft and Apple I love you both but Microsoft should learn from Apple's approach to an OS with added mobile device looking features. Re: Micrsoft unveils Windows 8
W8 does have it's merits, metro really not being one of them, and I've been a fan MS through thick and thin . BUT.... While W8 is by no means the next Vista, it's still going to do wonders for new interest in Linux distros. Power users will ultimately reject being spoon fed a candy coated OS that belongs on tablets and is meant for the higher percentage of "lazy" users that won't miss what they never really used on previous MS versions. Now maybe more than ever with Nvidia Linux driver support and Steam's announcement of Linux supported offerings coming to the site... http://store.steampowered.com/news/9289/ It's about friggin' time!!!
