I agree 100% I just got my first DSLR last year. I decided to get the Digital Rebel XT. I love it. I will never use a point and shoot again.

Fuji F30 and a Kodak C875...both point and shoot.

The F30 (6.3 MP) fits nicely in a shirt pocket and is unbelievable when it comes to taking pics indoors...even without a flash. Superb! Great camera for parties.

The C875 (8 MP) is nice for outdoor pics. Not too good indoors though. A little too big for a shirt pocket also.

Both shoot great video, although the Kodak's mic seems to pick up too much wind noise.

Ha, the XT is nice, it really isn't terribly large.  The only thing I don't like is how much extra I'd have to spend to get a decent zoom.  The S3 IS has 12x zoom and the stock lens with the XT is eqivilent to about 3x, not really enough.  I might get an S3 now and in some time, if I want more manual control, move to the XT.

I've got a Sigma 70-300 telephoto/macro that was about $200. Though, if you're doing macros or zoomed in really far on a specific object (not a landscape, lets say) you'll most likely need a good tripod. But if you take numerous pictures of the same subject, you can usually find one that's not blurred

Re: What kind of camera are you using?

i want a digital slr but i dont have that much money to spend. so right now im using a beaut of a Samsung Digimax i6. it's good for most of the pictures i'd like to take (you know, the ones where you get tons of people together and smile at the camera), but for close up shots, i need to make sure i take quite a few extra shots to make sure the focus is right (can't really tell from the screen). but with 2 512mb cards, i don't need to worry about running out of memory, even shooting at full 6 MP resolution =)

Canon SD800IS is an excellent camera. The image stabalization is unbelievable. NewEgg has a great price on it, and you can also buy a 2GB Sandisk Ultra II SD card for it at a great price. Makes a very good combination.

www.dpreview.com has an extensive review on the camera.

Re: What kind of camera are you using?

Right now I'm using a simple, compact Canon SD600. It takes good enough shots for college and stuff. This summer I'm treating myself to a Canon EOS400D Rebel XTi kit and possibly a zoom lens for my more serious photo jobs.

Canon Powershot SD600.  Just a point and shoot that's small enough I can take anywhere, but still get nice pics.

I'm personally saving up for the Rebel XT, I have always heard good things about them and they pretty much have the best features for the price. But right now I'm using the 2.1MP Canon Cybershot i think?

Re: What kind of camera are you using?

I've just got a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ7K (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830180092) for my birthday from my wife. It's a great little PnS camera and probably the best camera in the sub-$200 range. Coming with a free 1GB SD card from NewEgg, is a no brainer!

I'm very happy with it's photo quality and image stabilization. I'll be getting on of those Joby Gorilla Pods sometime soon though.

Here's a snapshot I took of my friend Cheryl's pitbull pup Otis: http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/1508/p1000278uh9.jpg

I'm not a serious photographer so the fancy DSLR's don't appeal to me but they might in the future. I've come a long way, my old camera was a Panasonic DMC-LC20 and I paid close to $400 for that camera about 6 years ago! It took beautiful shots though!

Re: What kind of camera are you using?

I have some past experience with regular 35mm SLR cameras, I have only begun to try to figure out what I want in a digital camera.  Some of the previous comments about DSLR got me to looking at some on Ebay, but they are considerably more expensive than a point and shoot camera.  My actual needs are pretty simple and a point and shoot would probably suffice, but my past experience makes me interested in DSLR.  The Ebay prices ranged from $200 to thousands for a whole working camera, but even the lower priced one was more than I planned on spending.  My question is if there are some brands or models that are simply bad and should be avoided?  In other words, is $200 a red flag to be wary of?
