Memory configuration, dual vs. triple channel

Can someone be kind enough to explain (in not too geeky terms) the relative merits of dual vs. triple channel memory configuration?

Am planning on building a machine principally for photo editing (no video, no games).

Only major difference is the acutaul CPU using it, the I7's are great. If you have HUGE programs to run that are very tasking, it can do it.

Basically, tell us what you need your PC to do, and we'll help you build it................

GPU may be dependant in many programs as well,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Many thanks for your response.  As a veteran of the Korean "conflict" I appreciate your tribute to all the veterans.

I am just in the planning stage of building a computer which will be used primarily for photo editing (no video, no gaming) and other routine jobs.  If I may I would like to take advantage of your kind offer and send you the specs for the parts I have picked out to see if I have chosen wisely or otherwise.

Hope it worked and if so I will be most greatful if you would comment and point out any grevious mistakes and incompatibilities.

    Yes

I'll look at it as soon as I get a chance.

I moved your post to the correct area for that type of question for everyone else to see as well.

Re: Memory configuration, dual vs. triple channel

Better deal on a PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341019

    Better RAM   http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231189

The version of windows you selected is an "Upgrade" version, that means you need a Operating system installed on the computer before you can install the Win7.

The video card you selected is OK, but its out of stock.

Velocirapters aren't really worth the money, I'd suggest two drives in a RAID 0 for close to the same speed at half the cost. You would benifit far more by running the 64 bit version and using 8GB of RAM doing photo editing. with what you would save on the drives the price of your build wouldn't change much. Just something to think about.

Many thanks for going over my wishlist and making these suggestions.

Unfortunately the PSU you suggested is also out of stock, but maybe it will be restocked.

I noticed the video card I had picked is out of stock so I replaced it with

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121328

Am aware that w7 is an upgrade.  I currently have XP-home.

The general recommendation for Photoshop is to use 2 hard drives.  One for the O/S and its page file and a second for the Photoshop scratch disk.  Is this possible in a Raid 0 configuration?

I would certainly like to increase to 8 gig of ram.

Again many thanks.  I really appreciate your help.  I built my first computer around 1985 and have been doing a rebuild about every 5 years since.  However the hardware technology has advanced so much in the past 5 years I simply have not been able to keep up with the changes.

Re: Memory configuration, dual vs. triple channel

Yea, if you have two drives in RAID 0 for your OS you can still have a third single scratch drive, or even a second RAID 0 scratch drive.

Remember that 32 bit  operating systems only support 4GB of ram, so your PC on 4GB may only show 3.25GB of ram.

There outta stock on that PSU already? LOL

That video card should do just fine.
