I'm looking for a new videocard, I'm upgrading from an older msi 8600 superclocked model. I'm looking for one card, to run duel moniters, and i have a pretty good grasp of tech. but i dont know  how to compare ati vs. nvidea, is there a scale to compare the two? i just dont know the model #s of ati, and wich ones are faster. Looking at 280+ nvidea or ati equivilent, any help on this would be appreciated.

If you are looking to buy now, I say go with ATI.  I'm a Nvidia person myself but they are dragging a** right now in gettting out some new product.  I don't believe in always having the newest or the latest but I'm surprised Nvidia doesn't have an single DDR5/DX 11 card to offer.  Windows 7 has rolled out and Modern Warfare 2 is around the corner.  Some people would have upgraded their Nvidia card just for one of those reasons.  I'm sure that when they finally come around the cards will be top notch but the folks at ATI have to love the fact that their cards have no Nvidia competition right now.   

The GT3xx series will be out end of this year and will be GDDR5 DX11. However when manufactures roll out a game they make sure its not just DX11 or DX10 only they will make them backwards compatible, E.G. Resident Evil 5 and H.A.W.X, FSX, Crysis, Crysis Warhead, FC2 ect... are both DX9 and DX10 and you have your choice with that as well.  So I am sure that Modern Warfare 2 will be DX11 and DX10 compatible.

took the words right out my mouth, there are some i believe mostly the graphically uneducated (bb shoppers) to name one that get wrapped up in their ploy about how you need this in order for this work properly...

for instance i went to go buy kaspersky IS 2010 and a rep helping me was like "what version of windows do you have, because it does not work with windows 7" didn't wanna be a smart a** but I was like uh yea whatever you say, I have xp right up to 7 and uh it works because i have been it using for the past 3 months but my trial expired. the rep was like o well i warned you.  i have been using that damn thing all weekend and it beats the hell out of friggin norton which was deleting my files on its own without my permission.

And here is the problem with that the people who do this will be kicking themselves because the price dropped. is there any reason to get the GDDR5/DX11 cards now or wait... people with common since like myself will wait.

And if you remember at all they also said that about Crysis when it was being made and wow what was it DX9/DX10.

tracer is right though, you will be kicking yourself if the prices fall significantly, i am playing the waiting game myself cause once fermi comes out the evergreen products prices will drop.  another note is these prices might also drop once the dual gpus drop and ati might announce another xx90 series...then what?

ROFLOL your friend is on CRACK tell him to put the glass pipe down, And you can tell him I said that as well.

I have a 9800GTX as well its a good card but gets killed by the 4870, 4850, 4850X2, 4870X2, 5870,5850, 4890 and so on. Just look up the benchmarks for each card and you will see that the 9 series even the GTX2xx series gets killed by ATI HD cards for over a year now.

Wow a 9800gtx out performing all the top of the line ATI cards out right now. Someone is a little confused. My last card was a 9800GTX+. It was a nice card and played everything well, but not even close to the top end ATI cards.

Kinda wish i would have waited a little longer to upgrade. This time of the year has some very nice price drops.

When I go shopping for graphic cards, I usually go looking at what's the best bang for buck.

Yes, most of the time Nvidia releases the single top card but the price they have always released it (and even dropped down too) has always been outside of a budget for that performance range.

My advice is to shop for bang for buck. I love nvidia GPU's but how they market now a days, I will never buy another card from them until they quit the gauging on us consumers.

 The 5870 has no competition and it blows the competition away. If that card was the Nvidia card - I bet it would be costing $600 + right now. And it's just not worth $600+ imo

So go looking at either cards and find the best bang for buck. I picked up 2 4870's 1gb for $50-$75 less than a GTX 285..... 

 I think it works like this for the market

ATI = Man on a budget

Nvidia = Man with deep pockets

I'd go ATI just for how they market (I think it's much on your pockets for the performance) Nvidia cards are too much Hype

Well, to be fair, the GTX 285 is a much better card than a 4870. the 4870 is closer to a GTX260 in performance.

Still, though, being able to Xfire 2 4870's for 50$ less than 1 gtx285 will save you money and give you WAY better performance.

I'm definitely an ATI fan myself. You can pretty much always get equal or better performance out of ATI cards for less money. 

 

The GTX 285 is only 13% faster on average than a 4870 1gb version (depending on resolution and game) And it can vary like stated.

Again, that's why I picked up the 2 cards. I love Nvidia/EVGA cards to death, just that the bang you get from them isn't like the old days. I'm tired of 8800GTX revison 4.0.....

Most people seem to shop for the brand they like more which their is nothing wrong with that at all unless you're actually trying to compare.

 I always advise my clients/friends to review the cards that provide the best performance per dollar. If you have no budget and don't mind dropping money for that name brand - Go with the Nvidia

If you want great performance (not top dog) for a quarter of the price - ATI is yours.
