Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb in gaming pc?

How well would this processor hold up with a good video card and other parts? I thought it was good, but some people said it wasnt. Im really confused as to what different people have to say about this processor. Some say its good, others bad. All help would be appreciated.

Re: Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb in gaming pc?

If you already got the mobo then it's fine.

If you're buying a board too, consider the new Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor - Retail for $10 more. You could get a CF P55 for much less than that MSI 790, and with some mild OC, blaze way from a 955.

    Penewah!

(Disclaimer: I've had some interesting dialogue with a few inquirers, and want to make clear, straight up the 965, and lesser extent, 955 do bench comprable to the  750 at stock. I realize I should have been making this more clear, it is on a stock OC, the 750 shows its performance over these top offerings from AMD. Both the 955/965 have noted walls near 4.0, the 750 going 4.2 Ghz with more V (and still power wise much more juice froendly to the others). I've had a few retorts of stock benchmarkss and yeah that's fine and dandy, I've ackowledge them, but not too  many game and bench at stock, and once the 750 is ramped, it does indeed show its value and performance. Re: Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb in gaming pc?

so the i5-750 would be better at stock? Or a mild overclock? And how much would I end up spending on a decent mother board with multiple pciex16 slots?

Im really leaning to the 955 because its cheaper and the motherboard with all the features is cheaper. Will I do badly on games like crysis on a 955 BE?

Re: Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb in gaming

I recently did an upgrade to the 955BE and it was totally worth it.  I only surf the web and play games so it is more than enough for my needs, and plus the AM3 motherboards' chipsets will allow you to use the same board for a long time unlike some companies... (I don't hate Intel, I'm just too poor. lol)

Re: Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb in gaming

There's nothing wrong with the 955 in gaming, I have it and I love it.

I mean yes, the i5/i7's can OC better and beat the 955 in performance, but my god it's not like that means it's slow. It's not like the 955 is gonna bottleneck you.

It's just a matter of choice.

And the unlocked multiplier makes it so easy to overclock.

I'm at 3.7 GHz on the stock HS/F.. Takes like 2 minutes in the BIOS.. I am quite enjoying mine.

So you could go with an i5, but in all honesty I don't think it REALLY makes a difference as far as gaming is concerned. At least my opinion.

The VC will bottleneck you long before the processor does.

I play Crysis with all settings very high 8xAA with no lag whatsoever, with an overclocked 4850 X2..

I couldn't tell you FPS but the processor isn't struggling at all.

It's much more dependent on your video card than your processor as far as I know. :)

if gaming is your concern then the Phenom II's are as good if not a little better than even the core i7 when considering best bang for the buck, the amd is not as good in synthetic benchmarks, but who cares.

With a 1100w PSU on a rig drawing 400w you are total n00b.     I bet your ram isn't set right. That RAM needs 2.14v or higher voltage, and the latencies set right or it won't run stabil.

You have the latest drivers for your video card and chipset right? All the latest patches? Latest Bios updates for your mainboard?

Video  drivers are latest WHQL v 195.39

Mobo v 15.49 Nforce  BIOS v.2.4 latest MSI available.

As for the PSU being 1100w.Why not? I like it and works great.
