External HDs

is it possible to have a portable-style external HD that does not need to be plugged in and also does not need to utilize two USB ports?

With a wireless router, you can use an external wireless hard drive enclosure like this one.

Or you could go with this little guy. but storage space is limited

OK, i don't want to go wireless, so it looks like it needs to be powered somehow. do they make any of the really small portable drives plug-in? i've seen many that are 2-usb, but i literally have only one usb slot. thanks.

How big of a drive do you want? A thumb drive needs no power source and they come in sizes from 1 GB for $10 up to 128 GB for $300. Some even have extra USB ports built in so you can add devices on top of the drive.

There are also these which are 1.8" form factor. They use only one USB port for both power and data transfer. Or like Fab said about the USB flash drives but the larger the capacity the more it will cost.
