Need a New Power Supply for a Dell Dimension 9100

    Hi,

I have a Dell Dimension 9100.  The stock power supply is 375W, I beleive.

I currently have a GeForce 7900 GT/GTO and it seems to run fine on the power supply eventhough the suggested is 450W.  Can't remember exactly what the amp rating is on the 12 v rail.

Anyway, I think it is a BTX case and I have tried upgrading the power supply before and they didn't fit, the screw holes did not line up.

Does anyone have any ideas for a power supply in the 600W range that will work?  I am looking to get a GeForce 2xx series video card.

Or, as an alternative, would taking all the stuff out of the Dell case and putting it all in an ATX/BTX case and just getting an ATX power supply be a better idea?

    Hopefully this post made sense....lol

Thanks in advance for any advice/input,

     Matt

Well here is the thing about Dell, they are very space limited so the GTX2xx series will be out of the question considering all but the GTX250 are 10.5" in length.

Ones that you can install in there are 9" and lower

    ATI4850

    9600GT

    9500GT

    9400GT

    ATI4650

    ATI4770

And if you want the GTX2xx series and a ATX PSU to fit then here is the case COOLER MASTER HAF 932 RC-932-KKN1-GP Black Computer Case With Side Panel ... - Retail 149.99 or this COOLER MASTER HAF 922 RC-922M-KKN1-GP Black Steel + Plastic and Mesh Bezel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail 99.99.

Dell uses a proprietary case so its hard to upgrade using standard parts.  Getting a new case might be the best way to proceed.

I like this PSU if you are looking for suggestions.

    Thanks for the information.

I was just doing more Google searches.

Apparently PC Power & Cooling makes a Silencer 500 Dell specific power supply.  Just ordered a refurb'd power supply for $62 ($80 something new) with a 5 yr warranty.  500W (550W peak) with 35A on the 12V rail.  Hopefully yhat should work.

They don't make them anymore, but they are coming out with a new model shortly.  They did not have an ETA.  http://www.pcpower.com/products/power_supplies/dell/

Well get the new one over the refurb. Not that much more in cost really less the $20.

Yeah, I would have gotten the new one, but they don't have anymore because they don't make them anymore.

But, the good thing is that the refurb'd supply has a 5 year warranty.
