PC doesn't turn on when 8-pin ATX12V is connected.

When I have all the connectors, except the 8-pin ATX12V connector, connected the computer will turn on but won't boot. When I have all the connectors connected the system doesnt do anything when I power the unit up.

I have an AsRock Penryn1600SLI-110DB mobo. and a BFG 650w psu (with two 12V rails with 20 amps on each rail). As far as the rest of my build it should be in my sig.

Could there be a short in the psu or the connector on the mobo? I do have an RMA case ready to go for both components. However, I would like your feedback on possible causes, fixes or thoughts about what might be a resolution.

You get no response from the power button what so ever with it plugged in?

This condition usually indicates a shorted out main board, Take the mainboard out of the case and lay it on some plain brown card board and try it that way.

I agree that you should check for shorts.  You might also check to see that the PSU is wired correctly.  Your manual will have a pinout for the 8 pin connector. You might also inspect both sides of the connection and consider blowing them out.

If your PSU is modular, make sure everything is plugged into the right type of jack if they have any differences on your model.

Re: PC doesn't turn on when 8-pin ATX12V is connec

As an original member of the site I never thought I would come across this level of a perplexing scenario in my own build.

I took a friend's mobo, an XFX socket 775, and the system booted fine.

So it must be the motherboard I thought. But then my friend recommended I try a different psu with my mobo. So I put my mobo in his computer. It then boots past cmos and i go into the bios and everything looks great.

So I try my system again and I get no boot up when the 8-pin is connected. Out of curiosity I tried it without the 8-pin and it powered on but didnt get cmos.

I tried reconnecting the header and blowing it out. I am at a loss. Im just gonna rma my mobo. then if that doesnt work ill buy the mobo off of my buddy.
