I recently upgraded my computer, and for a while, it was great, but now i get these unexplainable spikes.  Its completely sata, i have a 1tb (brand new), and a 250gb hard drive, both western digital.  I have the processes down to the bare minimum.  None of the processor cores are getting anywhere near 100%.  I've done a virus and malware scan - both negative.  I've done everything i can think of, but now i'm just tired of it.  It always seems to happen when i want to close a window, type something, or save something.  I've already had 3 big spikes just typing out this paragraph.  They last anywhere from a few seconds to 10 minutes or longer

It didn't seem to start until after i installed some updates from microsoft.  I don't know what the heck is going on, but its getting really, really annoying.  System stats are below

Try disabling windows pagefile and windows prefetch to see if they are the culprits?

I think i got this licked.  I turned off the back up thing and so far, i haven't had anything out of the ordinary happen.  No more unexplained access periods or delays.  finally back to normal :D

Well, its better, but its not fixed.  I disabled the back up, indexing and even did installed service pack 2, thinking maybe it was a corrupt file somewhere, but to no effect.  I opened up the resource monitor to see if i could find the file or process doing it, but all i found was a lot of memory faults when explorer.exe was doing something, 3900+ in some cases.  I ran a memory test, but the ram checked out.  I changed the virtual ram to automatic.

at this point, i'm just going to suffer through it in hopes that the windows7 install fixes whatever is causing it.

Windows7 didn't fix the issue, but after a couple trips the local shop, it turned out to be a defective harddrive.  The weird thing is that the old hd passed all the diagnostic tests with no reported issues.

oh well, its finally working as it should and i'm happy at last.  I can finally explore windows7 and have fun with it :D
